Description
Patented Mar. 8, 1938 UNITED STATES PATET OFFICE SCALP COOLING APPLIANCE Harold W. Ferguson, Rochester, N. Y.
Application April 27, 1937, Serial No. 139,292
8 Claims.
The invention relates to a scalp cooling appliance.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, practical and efficient scalp cooling appliance of comparatively inexpensive construction designed for use in connection with various permanent waving and hair curling devices and adapted to distribute over the scalp beneath such permanent waving and hair curling devices a cooling medium such as cool air and thereby prevent the heat incident to the use of permanent waving and hair curling devices from uncomfortably affecting the head of a person.
A further object of the invention is to provide a scalp cooling appliance consisting of either a single, round'tube or a pair of round tubes having side openings for the discharge of the cooling medium and provided at the bottom with means for supporting such tube or tubes upon the head of a person to maintain the scalp cooling appliance in proper position with relation to the scalp and to prevent rolling of the tube or tubes when in use so that the side openings will always be in proper position for the eifective distribution of the cooling medium over the scalp and beneath the protectors used in conjunction with permanent waving and hair curling devices.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a scalp cooling appliance comprising a pair of round scalp cooling tubes arranged side by side and united throughout their entire length to form a unitary scalp cooling appliance and provided in their outer side walls with openings for the discharge of a cooling medium and having a com,- bined width materially greater than the height of the air cooling device so as to aiford a broad base at the bottom of the same to rest upon the head of a person and resist rolling of the scalp cooling device when in use and maintain the side openings in proper position for the uniform and effective distribution of the cooling medium.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a scalp cooling device having at the bottom of its tube or tubes downwardly diverging feet arranged in pairs at intervals with the members of each pair at opposite sides of each tube for the purpose of insuring that the tube remains in proper relationship to the scalp when in use without liability of rolling and thereby causing a displacement of the discharge openings at the side or sides of the tube.
A further object of the invention is to provide a scalp cooling device having a pair of scalp cooling tubes and provided with a single coupling member for connecting the scalp cooling tubes with a supply tub-e for supplying a cooling medium such as cool air under pressure to the scalp cool ing tubes.
With the above and other objects in view, the 5 invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side View of a scalp cooling appliance constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same. 20
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a similar view taken on the line 55 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a detail view showing the closed outer ends of the scalp cooling tubes.
Figure 7 is a detail view of the nozzle receiving end of the coupling member. 30
Figure 8 is a transverse sectional view illustrating another form of the invention in which the scalp cooling device consists of a single scalp cooling tube.
Referring particularly to the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to '7, inclusive, of the accompanying drawing, the scalp cooling appliance comprises in its construction a pair of scalp cooling tubes l constructed of suitable material such as rubber and fabric or the like and arranged side by side throughout their entire length and flexible longitudinally to enable the scalp cooling appliance to be arranged upon the head of a person and fit or conform to the curvature of the same. The scalp cooling tubes l, which may be secured together at their adjacent sides in contiguous relation as shown at 2, are illustrated in the accompanying drawing as round and of the same diameter, but the tubes may be round, elliptical, semi-elliptical, or any other preferred configuration. When round tubes are employed, as shown, they are uniform in diameter and they provide a scalp cooling appliance with a broad base, as the scalp cooling appliance is of greater width and height. This arch 8 1938.
H. W. FERGUSON SCALP COOLING APPLIANCE Filed April 27, 1957 of flexible tubes arranged side by side throughout their entire length and connected together in substantially contiguous-relation to form a unitary structure, said tubes being provided with side orifices for the discharge of a cooling medium, and downwardly diverging feet arranged in pairs at intervals on each of the tubes for supporting the tubes upon the head of a person to prevent rolling of the tubes in use, whereby the discharge orifices are maintained in proper position with relation to the scalp.
!7. A scalp cooling appliance including a pair of tubes arranged side by side and secured together to form a unitary structure, said tubes being provided between their ends with side orifices for the discharge of a cooling medium and closed at their outer ends and open at their inner ends, and a single coupling member provided at one end with a laterally enlarged opening receiving the open ends of the tubes and adapted to be connected at the other end to a tube for supplying a cooling medium under pressure.
8. A scalp cooling appliance including a pair of round tubes of uniform diameter arranged side by side and secured together to form a unitary structure, said tubes being provided between their ends with side orifices for the discharge of a cooling medium and closed at their outer ends and open at their inner ends, a single coupling member provided at one end with a laterally enlarged opening conforming to the configuration of the open ends of the round tubes and receiving the same, the other end of the coupling memher being substantially circular, and a supply tube having a nozzle coupled to said circular end of the coupling member.
