W helm RIiiarQeli on! Ger hard 33 wwhwl w y 1959 w. RITZERFELD ETAL 2,895,413 PRESSURE ROLLER SUPPORT AND MOVING MEANS FOR A ROTARY DUPLICATING MACHINE Filed March 27, 1956 I 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 Inventanf: wdhehn Q+zerkl14 ancL cperkar jY)11AodS+Ju/y United States Patent 50 PRESSURE ROLLER SUPPORT AND MOVING I IEANS ron A ROTARY DUPLICATING MA- HINE Wilhelm Ritzerfeld, Berlin-Dahlern, and Gerhard Ritzerfeld, Berlin-Grunewald, Germany The present invention relates to a pressure roller support for a rotary duplicating machine of the type in which selectively either the entire master sheet makes an impression on a copy sheet, or selected portions or sections of the master sheet are impressed upon a copy sheet.
In machines of this type, control cam means are provided for moving the pressure roller in a selected sequence toward and away from the duplicating drum. In this arrangement it is possible .to select certain portions of the master sheet, for instance a heading and selected lines, and to print only such portions adjacent each other on a copy sheet. When it is desired to impress the entire master sheet on a copy sheet, according to the known arrangement a cam means holds the pres sure roller in engagement with the duplicating drum until the copy sheet has passed between the duplicating drum and the pressure roller. It will be understood that a far greater pressure is exerted on the cam means when the entire master sheet is used for making an imprint on the copy sheet, than when only selected sections of the master sheet are transferred to the copy sheet. Consequently, the control cam means are worn out to a much greater extent when the machine is used for duplicating the entire text of the master sheet, than when only selected lines are imprinted on the copy sheet.
It is one object of the present invention to overcome disadvantages of the known rotary duplicating machines of the above described type, and to provide a rotary duplicating machine in which the control mechanism required for producing the printing of selected lines, is not used during the normal operation of the machine for imprinting the entire text of the master sheet.
It is another object of the present invention to support the pressure roller during the printing of the entire master sheet by means which are independent of the control mechanism for producing the printing of selected lines.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a rotary duplicator in which a control cam means used for duplicating of selected selections of the master sheet is relieved of any pressure during the printing of the entire master sheet.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a rotary duplicator in which the printing pressure can be varied during the duplicating of selected sections of the master sheet and during the duplicating of the entire master sheet.
With these objects in. View, the present invention mainly consists in a rotary duplicator which comprises a duplicating drum for supporting a master sheet, pressure roller means including a pressure roller for pressing a copy sheet against the master sheet and support means supporting the pressure roller, the pressure roller means being movable between a first position in which the pressure roller is spaced from the duplicating drum and a second position in which the pressure roller tends to engage the duplicating drum along a printing line for ice pressing a copy sheet against the master sheet on a duplicating drum.v The rotary duplicator further comprises section printing control means driven from the duplicating drum and connected to the movable support means for moving the pressure roller means during each revolution of the duplicating drum in a selected sequence between the first position and the second position for duplicating selected sections of the master sheet. In accordance with the present invention, holding means are connected to the pressure roller,means and are movable between an inoperative position in which the pressure roller means is free to move between the first and second positions thereof and an operative position in which the pressure roller means is held and supported in the second position so that the section printing control means is rendered ineffective and the copy sheet is pressed continuously against the master sheet.
Preferably, the section printing control means are turnable cam means cooperating with a cam follower means which is part of the movable support means of the pressure roller.
The holding means includes an eccentric member which may be turned by suitable operating means. According to one embodiment of the present invention the eccentric member engages a pair of holding members which are connected to the pressure roller. According to another embodiment of the present invention, the eccentric member engages the support means of the pressure roller and holds the support means together with the pressure roller in the second position in which the pressure roller cooperates with the duplicating drum.
Preferably, the eccentric member is turnable between a plurality of operative positions so that it is possible to adjust the printing pressure at which the pressure roller is pressed against the duplicating drums Arresting means are provided for holding the eccentric member in its operative and inoperative positions.
The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its constructon .and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a rotary duplicating machine according to one embodiment of the present invention, one of the side walls of the machine being removed for the sake of clarity;
Fig. 2 is a side view illustrating the same embodiment as Fig. 1 in a dififerent operational position;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view along the line A--B in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a side view of the rotary duplicating machine according to another embodiment of the present invention, one side wall of the machine being omitted for the sake of clarity;
Fig. 5 is a side view of the rotary duplicating machine illustrated in Fig. 4 showing the machine in a different operational position; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan view of the rotary duplieating machine illustrated in Fig. 4.
Referring now to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a master sheet 2 carrying a mirror script original is secured to the surface of a duplicating drum 1. A clamping device 3 holds the master sheet 2 on the duplicating drum 1. The duplicating drum 1 is supported on a shaft 1a which is mounted in the frame of the machine in side walls 1b. Transporting rollers 4 and 5 are provided for transporting a copy sheet 6 to the printing line along which the pressure roller 8 tends to engage the duplicating drum 1. During normal operation, the master sheet 2- and the copy sheet 6 are located between the pressure roller 8 and the duplicating drum 1 so that the copy sheet ispressed against the master sheet. Before the copy sheet is supplied by the transporting rollers 4 and 5 to the printing drum and the pressure roller, it is moistened in a known manner by the moistening means 7.
The pressure roller 8 is mounted on movable support means which are illustrated to be a pair of levers 28 and 30 mounted on a shaft 29. A cam follower means 27 is mounted on lever 28 and cooperates with a section printing control cam means which includes a first cam 13 having two. projecting portions 13a and 13b, and a second cam 14'. The cam 13 serves for printing a head portion of the master sheet, and the cam 14 serves for printing selected sections of the master sheet. Cam 13 is fixedly connected to the duplicating drum 1 for-rotation therewith. Cam 14 is also mounted on the shaft 1a but is connected to the duplicating drum 1 through a mechanism' permitting a relative turning between cam 14 and the printing drum 1 for the purpose of selecting sections of the master sheet for duplication. The mechanism includes a stepping wheel 15, a locking pawl 16, and a stepping pawl 17. As is best seen in Fig. 3, a manually operated member 18 is connected to a lever 19 which acts on the stepping pawl 17 when the member 18 is manually operated. Consequently, it is possible to stepwise shift the stepping wheel 15 by operation of the member 18, and since the stepping wheel 15 is connected to the cam 14 it is possible to select lines or sections of the master sheet for automatic duplication as will be exexplained hereinafter in greater detail. In addition thereto, there is provided a roller 20 as best seen in Fig. 3, which can be shifted in axial direction into and out of engagement with the stepping pawl 17. If the roller 20 is shifted out of its inoperative position shown in dash and dot lines in Fig. 3 into its operative position shown in solid lines, the roller 20 will engage the stepping pawl 17 during rotation of the duplicating roller and correspondingly shift the stepping wheel and the cam means 14 for automatic operation.
As best seen in Fig. 3, a gear 26 is connected to the cam means 14, and meshes with a gear 25 which is turned by a chain wheel 24. Chain wheel 24 is connected by a chain 23 to another chain wheel 22. Chain wheel 22 can be manually turned by a knob 21. By turning knob 21 it is possible to return the stepping wheel 15 and thereby the cam 14 to initial positions.
The cam follower 27 engages both cam means 13 and 1 4. When the support means 28, 30 are pivoted by projecting portions of the cam means 13 and 14, the pressure roller 8 is moved toward. the duplicating drum 1 and as sumes the position shown in dash and dot lines in Fig. 1. Spring means are provided for urging the movable support means. 28, 30 into the position illustrated in solid lines in- Fig. 1. Consequently, the copy sheet will only be pressed against the master sheet, when the cam follower 27 engages a projecting cam portion of the cam means 13 and 14.
The cam portion 13a of the cam means 13 is provided for duplicating the heading of the master sheet. The cam portion 13b presses the pressure roller 8 against the duplicating: drum 1 for ejecting the unprinted portion of the copy sheet 6. The cam 14 turns the support means 28, 30 into a position in which the pressure roller engages the copy sheet for printing a selected line or section of the master sheet 2. Such section can be selected by operating the member 18. to shift the cam 14 into. a desired position.
The shaft portions 8a of the pressure roller 8 are supported on holding members 31. The holding members 31 are formed with cutouts 31a. An eccentric member 32 ismounted in the side walls 1b of the machine frame, and engages with its eccentric portions the cutouts 31a. A lever-11 is connected tothe eccentric member 32, and
tions associated with the slots 12b, it is possible to has on its free end a catch means cooperating with an arresting means 12 having a plurality of arresting slots 12a and 12b. The arresting slot 12a is associated with the inoperative position of the eccentric member 32 and is indicated by the indicia O. The slots 12b are associated with a plurality of operative positions of the eccentric member 32 and are indicated by the indicia I-V in Fig. 2. The catch lever 11 is pivotally connected with a link 10 which is pivotally connected with a manually operated lever 9. By operation of the pressure lever 9, the lever 11 and thereby the eccentric member 32 is turned, and during turning of the eccentric member 32, the catch means of the lever 11 consecutively engage the slots 12a and 12b, respectively, for arresting the eccentric member in a plurality of positions.
Fig. 1 illustrates a position in which the lever 11 engages the slot 12a of the arresting means 12, and in which the eccentric member 32 is in its inoperative position. In this position, the movable support means 28, 30 is pi'voted by the cam means 13 and 14, and consequently thepressure roller 8 is moved into and out of engagement with the duplicating drum in accordance with a selected sequence determined by the cam means 13 and 14. Dur-- ing such movement of the pressure roller, the holding. members 31 will follow the pressure roller and the movable support 28, 30 since such movements are not re.- strained by the eccentric member 32 due to the provision of the open cutouts 31a.
When the lever 9 is moved to one of the positions. I-V in which the lever 11 engages and is arrested by the slots 12b, the eccentric member 32 is turned into one of its. operative positions in which the holding mem: bers 31 are shifted to press the pressure roller 8 against the duplicating drum 1. shaft portions 8a, the movable support 28, 30 is turned into the position illustrated in Fig. 2. In this position, the cam means 13 and 14 are ineffective, and COIlSC-v quently the entire pressure between the pressure roller 8 and the duplicating drum 1 is taken up by the holding members 31 and by the eccentric member 32, while the.
cam means 13 and 14 are entirely relieved of any pressure.
By shifting the lever 11 between several operative posifurther adjust the pressure between the pressure roller 8 and the duplicating drum 1. Such pressure is not limited by considerations regarding the permissible pressure between the cam follower 27 and the cams 13 and 14.
It will be understood, that the cam means 13 and 14 The movable.
constitute section printing control means. support means 28, 30 and the pressure roller 8 together constitute pressure roller means, and the section printing control means 13, 14 are connected to the movable support means 28, 30 for moving the pressure roller means 28, 30, 8 between the positions illustrated, re.- spectively, in solid and dash and dot lines in Fig. 1. The holding members 31, the eccentric member 32, the lever 11, and the arresting means 12 together constitute holding means for holding the pressure roller means 8, 28, 30 in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 inwhich the section printing control means 13 and. 14 are rendered ineffective.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the main elements of the machine which correspond to elements described with reference to Figs. 1-3, are designated by the same reference numerals. A duplicating drum. 1 supports a master sheet 2 which is clamped to it by a clamping means 3. Transporting rollers 3 and 4 transport the copy sheet 6 to the printing line defined between the pressure roller 8' and the duplicating drum 1. Moistening means 7 are provided for moistening the copy sheet.
Gears 34, 35, 36 connect the shaft 1a of the duplicating drum with the shaft 48. Shaft 48 carries a plurality of cams 113 and 114, which constitute section printing control means. Cam 113 is provided with two projections 113a and 11312 corresponding to the projections Since the levers 30 engage the 5 13a and 13b previously described. The cam portion 113a effects the printing of the head portion of the master sheet. Cam 114 can be adjusted in axial direction as well as turned on shaft 48 for selecting line portions which have to be printed from the master sheet.
The pressure roller 8 is supported on a supporting lever 42 which is pivotally connected to a lever 41 and constitutes with the same a toggle lever means. Lever 41 is turnably supported on an eccentric member 132. Eccentric member 132 carries an arresting lever arm 111 which cooperates with an arresting member 112 provided with several slots or notches defining positions of the lever arm 111 and of the eccentric member 132. The positions of the lever arm 111 are indicated in Fig. 5 by and by Roman numerals I-V. A link 110 connects the lever arm 111 with a manually operated lever 109. When lever 109 is turned, the eccentric member 132 is turned between its positions.
The shaft end portions 8a of pressure roller 8 are also mounted in a lever 130. Lever 130 is turnable on a shaft 129 which also carries another lever 39. Lever 39 is connected to the pivot joint between levers 41 and 42 by a-link 129. A cam follower lever 128 carries a cam follower roller 127 and is provided with a pin sliding in acutout of lever 39. The levers 128, 39, 130, 40, 41 and 42 constitute an articulated lever system supporting the pressure roller for movement between an inoperative position spaced from the duplicating drum and an operative position in which the pressure roller 8 tends to engage the duplicating drum for pressing the copy sheet against the master sheet.
Another eccentric member 47 is provided which is tulned by alever arm 45. Lever arm 45 is connected by catch means to an arresting member 46 having a plurality of slots 46a designated by 0 and by Roman numorals I-V, respectively. A link 44 is connectedto lever 45 at one end thereof, and connected to a manually operated lever 43 at the other end thereof. When lever 43 is turned, the arresting lever 45 is shifted between its positions, and the eccentric member 47 assumes corresponding positions.
In the position illustrated in Fig. 4, the levers 43 and 109 are illustrated in a position in which the arresting levers 111 and 45, respectively, are in zero positions. In these positions, the machine does not operate. When lever 109 is turned into a position in which the arresting lever lll engages the slot 8:: indicated by Roman numeral I, the machine is ready for line or section printing. The section printing control cam means 113 and 114 become effective and operate the cam follower lever 128, whereby the toggle levers 41 and 42 are operated to produce prints of selected sections of the master sheet. When the lever 109 is further turned, the arresting lever 111 moves from the position I to the position V, 'whereby the pressure between the pressure roller 8 and the printing drum 1 is gradually increased.
When, however, the holding means including members 43, 44, 45 and 47 are actuated, the eccentric member 47 urges the lever 39 in the position illustrated in Fig. 5, in which the cam lever means 128 is rendered ineffective. The displaced lever 39 urges through link 40 the toggle lever means 41, 42 into a position in which the pressure roller 8 tends .to engage the duplicating drum 1, and urges the copy sheet against the master sheet so that the entire master sheet is printed on the copy sheet. The pressure between the pressure roller 8 and the master sheet 2 can be adjusted by operating lever 43 with lever 45 moving between the positions indicated in Roman numerals in Fig. 5 with respect to the arresting member 46.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of duplicating machines differing from the types described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a pressure roller supporting arrangement for a duplicating machine capable of printing selected sections of the master sheet, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.
Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can be applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this im vention and, therefore such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and. range of equivalence of the following claims.
