United States Patent "ice 3,170,391 APPARATUS FOR OPERATING A SELECTIVE PRINTING MACHINE Wilhelm Ritzerfeld, Schorlemer Allee 14, Berlin-Dahlem, Germany, and Gerhard Ritzerfeld, Franzensbader Str. 21, Berlin-Grunewald, Germany 7 7 Filed Oct. 11, 1961, Set. No..144,406 Claims priority, application Germany, st. 14, 1960,
'R 28,894, R 28,895 14 Claims. 4 (Cl. 10191) The present invention relates to an apparatus for operating a selective printing machine, and more particularly to a duplicating machine of the type in which a counter pressure roller is repeatedly moved to a printing position cooperating with a printing roller during each revolution of the printing roller for printing selected sections of a printing form attached to the printing roller on moistened copy sheets. I
Printing machines of this type are known, in which the counter pressure roller is moved to and from the printing position under control of cams, or under control of a rotary contact means which energizes an electromagnetic means to operate the counter pressure roller when desired and selected sections of the printing form pass through the printing line.
The selection of the sections to be printed is eifected by suitable cam shapes and positions in the mechanical embodiment, and by key operated contacts in the circuit of the electromagnetic means.
Regardless of the type of actuation of the counter pressure roller in the prior art, the counter pressure roller is actually shifted to and from the printing position by the operation of an angular lever, or of a pair of toggle levers.
Substantial forces are required for operating the counter pressure roller in this manner, since inertia of considerable masses has to be overcome. Moreover, if frequent actuation of the counter pressure roller is desired, resonance oscillations may occur which cause disturbances in rapid successive operations of the counter pressure roller. Moreover, substantial friction develops in a known mechanism for actuating the counter pressure roller.
It is one object of the present invention to overcome this disadvantage of known apparatus for operating a selective printing machine, and to provide means for moving one of the rollers of the printing machine in rapid succession to and from a printing position without any disturbances caused by resonance oscillations.
Another object of the present invent-ion is to provide means having a very small inertia, but are capable of moving a roller of a printing machine in rapid succession to and from a printing position.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a shiftable shaft passing through a roller of the printing machine, and supporting the roller for free rotation so that shifting of the shaft results in shifting of the roller to and from a printing position.
With these objects in view, the present invention relates to a device for shifting a roller of a printing machine, for example a counter pressure roller, to and from a printing position forming a printing line with a printing roller, which may carry a master sheet so that moistened copy sheets supplied to the printing line will receive imprints. Since the counter pressure roller is moved repeatedly during each revolution of the printing roller to the printing position, it is possible to select sections of the printing form to be printed inadjacent positions on the copy sheets.
.One embodiment of the invention comprises a printing roller means, and a counter pressure roller means; shaft means supporting one of the roller means, for example the counter pressure roller means, for free rotation therea on; operating means for moving the shaft means; and ac- 3,l7,39i Patented Feb. 23, 1965 tuating means driven in synchronism with the printing roller means and connected to the operating means for actuating the same during each revolution of the printing roller means.
In this manner, the counter pressure roller means can be repeatedly moved during each revolution to and from a printing position forming a printing line with the printingroller means.
Support means cooperate with journalmeans on the shaft means sons to supportthe shaft means for movement to and from an operative position in which the counter pressure roller means is in its print-ing position.
In one embodiment of the invention, the support means is a bearing means, the journal means are eccentric to the axis of the shaft means, and the counter pressure roller is shifted by turning the shaft means. In another embodiment of the invention, the support means includes a movable control cam means which has a cam slot for shifting the journal means and thereby the shaft means with the counter pressure roller.
' In either embodiment of the invention, the actuating means may include electromagnetic means, and a rotary contact means, in which event sections of the printing form are selected by operation of key-controlled contacts connected, respectively, in series with a set of stationary contacts which are respectively associated with the sections of the printing form and are successively engaged by the rotary contact means which turns in synchronism with the printing roller. However, it is also possible 'to provide cams which rotate in synchronism with the printing roller, and to operate the counter pressure roller from cam followers.
The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a fragmentary schematic side view, partly in section, illustrating one embodiment of the invention;
FIG. 2 is a plan view taken on line 22 in FIG. 1, and being partly in section;
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary schematic side view, partly in section, illustrating a modification of the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, with parts shown in FIG. 1 omitted for the sake of simplicity and clarity;
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary side view, partly in section illustrating another embodiment of the invention;
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary plan view, partly in section, taken on line 55 in FIG. 4; and
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary schematic side view, partly in section, illustrating a modification of the embodiment shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, with parts shown in FIG. 4 omitted for the sake of simplicity and clarity.
Referring now to the drawings, and more particularly to FIGS. 1 and 2, a printing roller 2 has on the periphery thereof means for attaching a printing form, shown to be a mirror-script master sheet 3. A driven shaft 1 carries printing roller 2 and drives through a gear train 6, 7, 8, a shaft on which a rotary contact arm 4 is mounted, so that contadt arm 4 rotates in synchronism with printing roller 2; A stationary member 5 carries a set of contacts K1 to K14 which are successively engaged by contact 27 on the rotary contact arm 4. A contact ring 28 rotates with arm 4 and is connected to contact 27. While a slide contact 29 slides on contact ring 28. A set of selector key contacts is provided, each of which is associ ated with circumferentially spaced sections of the printing form 3, and connected to one of the stationary contacts K1 to K14 so that the same are also associated with sections of the printing form 3. A group of electromagnetic means 20 is pivotally mounted on a shaft 50 which extends between the side walls 51 and 52 of the machine. The electromagnetic means 20 are connected in parallel to each other, and connected'in series to each of the contacts K1 to K14 on the one hand, and to slide contact 29 on the other hand. Consequently, current will flow through the group of electromagnetic operating means 20 whenever contact 27 engages one of the contacts K1 to K14 if the respective key-controlled contact was previously closed by operation of a respective key of the keyboard 21.
The electromagnetic means 20 operate, in a manner which will be described hereinafter in greater detail, the counter pressure roller 13 so that the same is moved to and from a printing position defining a printing line with printing roller 2 and printing form 3, such printing line being located in the printing plane AB which passes through the axes of rotation of printing roller 2 and counter pressure roller 13.
Copy sheets placed on a supply table 24 are transported by a pair of transporting rollers 25 and 26 while being moistened by moistening means 60. The transported copy sheets are fed to the printing line between rollers 2 and 13, and are further transported by rollers 2 and 13. If counter pressure roller 13 is not in its printing position, a holding means 61 holds the copy sheet so that the same does not move while printing roller 2 turns.
In accordance with the present invention, counter pressure roller 13 has a cylindrical hollow body, and is mounted by a pair of ball bearings 12 on a shaft portion 11:: which has at its ends a pair of journal portions 11b eccentric to shaft portion 11a, so that the common axis of journal portions 11b is spaced from the axis of shaft portion 11a, which is also the axis of rotation of the counter pressure roller 13.
A pair of support means 9 and 10 includes bearing means 9a and 10a which turnably support the journal means 11b. The support means 9 and 10 are pivotally mounted on a shaft 42 extending between the side walls 51 and 52. As best seen in FIG. 1, a bar 53 which connects side walls 51 and 52, passes between a pair of projections on each support means 9 and 10. Threaded bolts pass into threaded bores in bar 53, and are manually adjustable so that support means 9 and 10 can be angularly adjusted about shaft 42 whereby journals 11b, and thereby shaft portion 11a with counter pressure roller 13 can be adjusted.
Control means are provided for moving shaft means 11a, 11b, and include a pair of links 16 articulated by pivot means 15 to a pair of arms 14 which are respectively secured to journal portions 11b. The ends of links 16 are connected by a shaft 17 which passes through aligned bores of a plurality of fork-shaped members 1t;v which are connected to the armatures of electromagnetic means 20 by threaded spindles 19. A pair of springs 22 is secured to fixed pins on side walls 51 and 52, and also to extensions at the ends of shaft 17, so that shaft 17 is urged to a position in which links 16 turn arms 14 to the position illustrated in solid lines in FIG. 1 in which counter pressure roller 13 is spaced from printing roller 2.
When electromagnetic operating means 20 are energized, members 19, 19:: are retracted to the left as viewed in the drawing, so that links 16 pull arms 14 to the position illustrated in broken lines in FIG. 1 so that journal means 11b turn in bearings 9a and 10a. Since shaft portion 11a is eccentric, the simultaneous turning of shaft portion 11a effects a displacement of counter pressure roller 13 to the printing position illustrated in chain lines in FIG. 1.
The apparatus shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 is operated in the following manner:
A copy sheet 23 is placed on the supply table 24 and is transported by transporting rollers 25 and 26. When the motor driven shaft 1 is started, printing roller 2 performs a single revolution after which it is stopped in a conventional manner which is not an object of the present invention. Contact arm 4 rotates in synchronism with printing roller 2 and printing form 3 so that contact 27 is located on one of contacts K1 to K14 when the printing section associated with the respective contacts K1 to K14 passes through the printing line in the printing plane A--B. Before the operation was started, selected keys of keyboard 21 correlated with sections of the printing form desired to be printed, were actuated, so that respective contacts K1 to K14 associated with desired sections of the printing form are connected to electromagnetic means 26. Consequently, when contact 27 engages a contact K1 to K14 whose key contact was closed by operation of the respective key, the circuit of electromagnetic means 20 is closed, and the armatures 19, 19a are attracted to actuate the control means so that links 16 turns arms 14 to shift counter pressure roller 13 from the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 1 to the printing position shown in chain lines so that the respective selected section of the printing form is printed.
As soon as contact 27 leaves the respective contacts K1 to K14, electromagnetic means 20 are de-energized, although the respective key contact remains closed, and consequently springs 22 become effective to draw links 16 to a position in which arms 14 are turned back so that counter pressure roller 13 is again in its normal inoperative position spaced from printing roller 2. If other contacts were connected to the source of voltage by operation of the respective associated keys, the device will again be actuated when contact 27 passes over another contact K1 to K14 associated with a section of the printing form selected by operation of the key associated with respective printing form section and connected to the respective contacts K1 to K14.
After one revolution of printing roller 2, all selected contacts K1 to K14 have been passed by contact 27, and the corresponding sections of the printing form 3 are printed on the copy sheet in adjacent positions, since the holding means 61 stops the copy sheet during rotation of the printing roller 2 while undesired sections of printing form 3 pass through the printing line and counter pressure roller 13 is spaced from printing roller 2.
The printing pressure between counter pressure roller 13 and printing roller 2 in the printing position can be adjusted by adjustment of adjusting means 43. In different adjusted positions of support means 9, 10, the angle between the peripheries of counter pressure roller 13 and printing roller 2 is varied, together with the angle between the printing plane AB and the plane in which the axis of shaft portion 11a moves when journals 11b are turned, such axis being the axis of rotation of thecounter pressure roller 13.
The ernobdiment of FIG. 3 corresponds to the embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 2, as far as the shifting of the eccentric shaft means 11 by control means 16, 14, 9, and 10 is concerned. However, instead of electromagnetic operating means, cam followers are provided as operating means which are actuated by actuating cam means driven in synchronism with the printing roller 2. A cam follower means 38 is articulated to shaft 17 and is turnably mounted on a shaft 39. The other end of cam follower means 38 has a roller 37 which runs on a cam track which is formed by one or a selected number of cam discs 30 to 35. Cam discs 32 to 35 have projections which are spaced in circumferential direction from the other projections to engage cam follower roller 37 when an associated section of the printing form 3 passes through the printing line between rollers 2 and 13. The head of the text is represented by the cams 30 and 31 which are shiftable in axial direction to a position located in the plane of cam follower roller 37. Shaft 36 is rotated from printing roller 2 through a gear train 6, 7, 8, and whenever one of the cam projections engages cam follower means 37, 38, links 16 are shifted and the eccentric shaft means 11 is turned so that counter pressure roller 13 moves from the inoperative positions shown in solid lines in FIG. 3, .to the printing position shown in chain lines. Whenever a cam projection has passed cam follower roller 37, spring 16 retracts links 16 so that shaft means 11 is turned, and counter pressure roller 13 returns to its normal inoperative position. The apparatus may be provided with a known stepping arrangement by which one or several of the cams 32 to' $5 are automatically turned one step after each revolution of printing roller 2, such a step corresponding to the distance between sections of the printing form so that during each successive revolution of the printing form, successive lines or groups of lines of the printing form are printed on the copy sheet.
Referring now to the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 4 and 5, it will be seen that the general arrangement of the printing roller 2, the counter pressure roller 13, the transporting means 25 and 26, the rotary contact arm 4, 27, the keyboard 21, and the electromagnetic means 20 exactly correspond to the embodiment described with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2. The armature members 18 are articulated to shaft 17 to operate control members 16' against the action of springs 22. However, the control members 1e are provided with control cams, and in the illustrated embodiment of FIGS. 4 and 5, a cam slot 35 is formed in each control member 16 and includes two parallel end portions, and an inclined intermediate portion connecting the end portions of cam track 34. As best seen in FIG. 5, the center portion 11a of shaft means 11' is coaxial with. the journal portions 13b, and the journal portions 1312 project into the cam slots 34 of control members 11'. A pair of guide members 44 is secured to the frame of the machine, and have guide slots 43 extending transversely to cam slots 34 and also receiving the journal portions 11b. Consequently, when control members 16' are shifted in direction of the arrow C in FIG. 4, the journal portions 11b are forced by the cam track to move in guide slots 43' toward printing roller 2 so that counter pressure roller 13 moves with shaft portion 11a from the position illustrated in solid lines to the printing position illustrated in chain lines.-
The machine illustrated in FIGS. 4 and 5 is operated in substantially the same manner as the embodiment of FIGS. 1 and 2. One or several sections of the printing form are selected by operation of corresponding key means 21 by which key contacts are closed so that the circuit of electromagnetic means 20 is completed when contact 27 engages a stationary contact of the contacts K1 to K14. The energized electromagnetic operating means effect shifting of control members 16' in the direction of the arrow C so that the edges of cam slot 34, and particularly of its inclined center portion, urge the journal means 11b and thereby shaft means 11 and counter pressure roller 13 to the printing position. The circuit is interrupted when contact 27 passes beyond the repective contact K1 to K14, and springs 22 become effective to move the cam slot 34 to the right as viewed in FIG. 4 whereby the journal means 11b are retracted in guide slots 43 and counter pressure roller 13 is moved to its inoperative position spaced from the printing roller 2. During the movement of control members 16', the same are guided between a pair of guide rods 42'.
The modified embodiment of FIG. 6 corresponds exactly to the embodiment of FIGS. 4 and 5 as far as the control means 16, 34, 44, 43, and shaft 11 are concerned. However, the control means are operated by cam follower means 38 having'cam follower rollers 37 and being turnable about shaft 39. ActuatingYcams 30 to '35 are mounted on a shaft 36 which is driven through a gear 6, 7, 8 in synchronism with printing roller 2, as described in detail with reference to the embodiment of FIG. 3. Consequently, whenever one of the cam projections 30 to 35 engages cam follower roller 37, cam follower means 38 is rocked about shaft 39, and shifts controlmembers 16' to the left as viewed in FIG. 6 against the action of spring means 46 so that the journal portions 11b are shifted by cam slot 34 in guide slot 43' whereby the counter pressure roller 13 is moved from its inoperative position to its printing position. When a cam projection has passed roller 37, springs 40 retract control members 16', and the upper edge of cam slot 34 becomes effective to positively shift the journal portions 11b whereby counter pressure roller 13 is retracted from the printing roller. As in the embodiment of FIG. 3, a stop 41 limits the movement of cam follower means 38 so that the same normally abuts stop 41 under the action of spring 40.
From the above description of several embodiments of the invention it will become apparent that actuating means 4, 5 or 39 to 35 are operated in synchronism with the printing roller to actuate operating means 20 or 38 to shift the control means by which the counter pressure roller 13 is shifted to and from its printing position.
It will be understood that the control means of the present invention permit the shifting of the counter pressure roller by far smaller forces than are required in the construction of the prior art, and it has been found that actually half the force is required from the electromagnetic means, or from the cam means to shift a counter pressure roller of the same weight to and from the printing position, as compared with prior art constructions. Resonance oscillations do not occur, even if the counter pressure roller is shifted in very rapid succession to and from its printing position, and exact and accurate imprints of selected sections of the printing form are produced on the copy sheets. The construction is extremely simple and reliable, operates with very little friction, and can be easily assembled and adjusted to provide perfect prints, since by maintaining a constant friction at the bearing parts, differences in the motion of the parts can be reliably eliminated.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of printing machines differing from the types described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a device for shifting the counter pressure roller of a printing machine to and from a printing position, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.
Without further analysis the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.
