(ci. 10i-132) l The present invention relates to duplicating machines and is particularly applicable to that type of duplicating machine wherein a master copy is made in reverse with suitable copying ink, 5 and. copy sheets have the record transferred thereto by moistening the copying sheets with a suitable solvent and pressing them into engagement with the master sheet. In machines of this character, it is common practice to secure the l master sheet to a platen in the form of a rotatable drum and to supply the copy sheets to the drum by passing them between combined feeding and moistening rolls, one roll being supplied with a suitable solvent which it transfers to the surface of the copy sheet.
Machines have been used heretofore wherein means are provided for rotating the drum from a suitable drive member which is so connected to the drum that, upon each complete rotation of 20 the drum. the drum is stopped in the proper position for the advancement of a fresh copy sheet thereto, in which machines the driving means continues to operate while the drum remains stationary so as to provide a dwell or stop 25 period for' the drum during which the operator ,Y
may engage a fresh copy sheet with the combined feeding and moistening rolls. The present invention provides in a machine of this general type a novel means whereby a fresh copy sheet is l 30 automatically advanced during this dwell period from a stack of sheets upon a copy sheet tray. ,The sheet feeding means in my improved machine advances the copy sheet to the combined feeding and moistening rolls while such rolls 3" are held stationary so as to serve as stop means for limiting the forward movement of the sheet and holds it there until the drum and the rolls have started a new duplicating cycle.

Referring now to the drawings, the invention is shown as embodied in a duplicating machine which comprises a framework composed of a pair of sheet metal side frames I0 and Il having sup'n l5 porting feet I2 and I3 thereon, a back end frame I4 connecting the side frames IIJ and II and a front end frame I5 connecting the side frames Ill and II. The side frames I0 and II are provided with fianges I6 and I1 extending inwardly 20 toward each other, and the end frames I4 and t I5 overlap with and are secured to these iianges to provide a rigid structure. The side frame lil carries a mounting plate I9, and the side frame II carries a mounting plate I9.v The plates I8 25 and I9 have inwardly extending tubular portions and 2i formed thereon to provide support for a pair of bushings 22 and 23 in which a drum shaft 241s journalied. End plates 25 and 26 are secured to the opposite ends of the shaft 24by 30 screws 21 and 23 so as to prevent endwise move? ment of the shaft 24.
The shaft 24 has a duplicating drum 29 keyed thereto by a pin which is screw threaded into a hub portion 3| provided on one end of the drum 35 29. The shaft 24 also has keyed thereto a gear 32 and a gear 33. i
Below the drum 29, a pair of studs 34 and 35 (see Fig. 5) are fixed in the side frames I0 and II and carry inwardly extending screw threaded pins 3B and 31. The pins 36 and 31 terminate in reduced end portions 39 and 39 which support the'inner' end of a receiving tray 40. The receiving tray 40 has side flanges 4I and 42 provided with notches in which the portions 33 and 45 39 engage. The rear end frame I4 has a bracket 43 thereon for supporting the tray 40. 'I'he pins 36 and 31 also support a pair of swinging arms 44 and 45 which are pivoted on the pins `315 and 31 and held in place by a pair of nuts 46 and 41. 5o The swinging arms 44 and 45 are formed as shown best in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 withiforwardly extending portions 48 and 49. The portions 48 and 49 support a pair of ball bearings 50 and 5I which rotatably mount a shaft 52 Vof a platen roller 53. 55
The platen roller 53 is pressed upwardly against be drum 29 with the desired amount of pressure by adjusting the arms 44 and 45 at their lower ends. The arm 44 at its lower end carries an adjusting stop screw 54, and the arm 45 carries a similar adjusting stop screw 55. The stop screws 54 and 55 have theirheads engaging fiat sided enlargements 56 and 51 which are provided on a pair of sleeves 58 and 59 keyed to a shaft 60 that is journalled in the side frames |0 and Il. 'I'he shaft 60 has a knurled linger piece 6| at one end thereof on the outside of the side frame so that it can be turned to move the heads of the screws 54 and 55 from the fiat surfaces oi the enlargements 56 and 51 onto the rounded portions thereof which results in increasing the pressure of the platen roller 53 against the drum 29.

led May 29, 1936, for Duplicating apparatus. The shaft 62 has an operating lever 65 fixed thereto which is normally held by a spring 66 in position to close the gripper 64. One end of the spring 65 is secured to the lever 65, and the other end is secured to a pin 61 mounted on the end of the drum 29. For opening the gripper 64 to release an old master sheet and to insert a new one. a lever 68 is pivoted on a pin 69 carried by the side frame This lever is adapted to be pressed against the free end of the lever 65 by a hand lever 10 to open the grippers in the manner describedy in my application hereinbefore mentioned, The lever 68 carries a stop pin 1| that is adapted to engage in an aperture 12 formed on the surface of the drum 29 so that, when the lever 65 is moved to open the gripper 64, it also locks the drum 29 against movement until the grippers are again allowed to close.
In front of the drum there is mounted a moistening roller 13 which is supported from -the side frames |0 and and which has a gear 14 at one end (see Fig. 3) driven by a gear 15 which in turn is driven by the gear 32. Beneath the roller 13, there is mounted an absorbent roller 11 which is carried on a pair of arms- 18, only one of which is shown. The arms 18 are mounted on stub shafts 19 and are yieldingly forced upwardly to press the roller 11 against the roller 13 by means of a spring 80, one end of which engages one of a series of notches 8| provided in an extension of the arm 18. The other end of the spring 80 is secured to a pin 82 which is Y secured to the side frame and projects inwardly therefrom.
'A moistening liquid container 83 is mounted on a pair of supporting shafts 84 and 85 secured in the side frames I0 and and has a Wick 86 which engages the roller 13. Liquid is supplied to the container 83 for moistening the Wick 86 froma reservoir 81 that is mounted in the front frame member I5. A pump 88 is provided in the reservoir 81 for pumping moistening liquid through a conduit 89 to the container 83. The pump 88 comprises a pump cylinder 90 and a piston 9| therein pressed downwardly by means of a spring 92. 'I'he piston 9| has a piston rod 93 which projects upwardly through the topof the cylinder 90 and is secured to a pump operating lever 94. The pump operating lever has a finger piece 95 thereon. The pump operating lever 96 is pivoted on a stud 96 carried by the side frame and is limited in its downward movement by a stop arm 91 which is secured thereto in a suitable manner as by welding and which cooperates with the lever 94 to provide a slot 98 in which the piston rod 93 is received. The piston rod is provided with a nut 99 against which the lever 94 engages.

The cam lever |01 is actuated by means of a cam 2 which engages a roller ||3 on the cam lever 01. The cam ||2 is fixed to a gear ||4 which is journalled upon a stub shaft ||5 carried by the side frame 'I'he cam ||2 is spaced from the gear ||4 by means of spacers ||6 through which a series of rivets ||1 pass to secure the cam and gear together.
The means for driving the gear ||4 comprises a pinion ||8 which is fixed upon a shaft ||9 that is journalled in a bearing |20 provided on the plate I9, A hand lever |2| is fixed to the outer end of the shaft 9 so that it may be rotated.
The arms ||0 and cooperate to actuate a sheet feeding mechanism by which copy sheets may be fed to the rolls 13 and 11. The sheet feeding mechanism, as shown best in Figs. 1 to 4 and '1, comprises a copy sheet tray |22 mounted between the side frames |0 and and having a lip |23 extending forwardly to a point adjacent the bight of the rollers 13 and 11. The copy sheet tray |22 has adjustable guides |24 and |25 thereon by which a block of sheets shown at |26 may be positioned on the tray. A back stop |21 is provided at the outer end of the tray |22. The sheets are advanced from the top of the stack 26 by a pair of friction rollers |28 and |29 that are carried in a frame |30. The frame |30 includes side flanges |3| and |32 notched as shown at |33 to receive a shaft |34 which carries the friction rollers |28 and |29. The frame |30 has a bar |35 adjustable longitudinally of a pair of slots |36 provided in the side flanges |3| and |32 to engage the friction rollers |28 and |29 when they are pressed back against it and prevent rotation of these rollers. The frame |30 has a hub |31 secured to a cross bar |38 by a set screw |39. The bar |35 is adjustably secured to the frame |30 by a screw |40 which passes through an opening in the frame |30.and through a slot |4| in the bar |35. Re-
;ferring now to Fig. 7, where it is best illostrated, it will be evident that, if the frame |30 is moved to the right by sliding it along the top of the pile of sheets |26, the friction rollers |28 and |29 will move back against the cross bar |35 due to their shaft being free to slide in the slots |33. When the friction rollers engage the cross bar |35, they will not rotate any further and will tend to slide the top sheet of the pile |26 to the right with them.
The cross bar |38 is carried by a pair of brackets |42 and |43. These brackets are fixed to side rods |44 and |45 which are slidably mounted in a bracket |46 on the side frame and a bracket |41 on the side frame il. In addition, the rods are slidably mounted by a second pair of brackets |48 and |49 which are -riveted against the plates |8 and |9 and carry suitable bearings for the rods |44 and |45. The rods |44 and |45 are connected to the armsl and ||0 respectively by a pair of links |50 and |5I. The links |50 and |5| are pivoted to a pair of U-shaped members |52 and |53 that are riveted to the rods |44 and |45. The nstructure just described is such that, when the lever arms l| I0 and I|| are moved from the position shown in Fig. l to that shown in Fig. 2, they move the rods |44 and |45 with them thereby advancing the friction rollers |28 and |29 toward the rolls 13 and 11 and causing them to move the top sheet of the piley |26 into thebight of the rolls. In order to guide the top sheet to the bight of the rolls, a
f guide plate |54 is mounted over the lip |23 to provide a guide passage leading directly to the rolls.
In order to drive the drum through a complete rotation and to advance the copy sheets, to the rolls 13 and 11, while the rolls land drum are stationary, there is provided a drive mechanism between the pinion I8 and the gear 33 by which the drum is given a dwell or stationary period while the pinion |I8 continues to drive the cam ||2. This drive mechanism comprises a pinion |55 which is carried by a stub shaft |56 jouriialled in a suitable bearing |51 provided in the frame 'I'he pinion |55 drives a gear |58 which is rotatably mounted on a stub shaft |59 fixed to the frame Il. The gear |58 has riveted thereto a mutilated gear |60, the form of which is shown bestin Fig. 6. This mutilated gear is adapted to mesh with the gear 33 to rotate the gear 33 for a complete rotation, and then continue to rotate while the gear 33 remains stationary for the amount necessary to move a smooth portion |6| of the gear |60 past the gear 33. This smooth portion |6| constitutes about one-fourth of the gear |60 and the gear ratio between the pinion |55, and the gear |58 is such as to require four rotations of the pinion |55 for one rotation of the gear |58.
The driving relation between the gear |58 and the gear ||4 which drives the cam ||2 is such that, during the period of rotation of the gear |58 thatvmoves the smooth portion |6I of the gear |60 past the gear 33, the gear |14 turns the cam ||2 to cause it to move the lever l|01 from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2 and to hold it there until the gear 33 has been again started in rotation. The cam ||2 then releases the lever |01 and the sheet feed actuating mechanism comprising the arms ||0 and the rods |44 and |45 and the parts carried thereby to be returned tostarting position. This return is accomplished by a return spring |62 (see Fig. i) which extends between the pin 82 and the arm ||0 and is under suicient tension to retract the sheet feeding mechanism.4
While certain embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims in which it is the intention to claim allnovelty inherent in the invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.
Having thus7 described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a duplicating machine of the characterv described, a frame, a drum rotatably journalled therein, means to mount a master sheet on said drum, drive means for said drum including means operable automatically to cause successive revolutions of the drum with dwell periods between the revolutions upon continued operation of said drive means, a plurality of lcooperating moistening and feeding rolls driven by said drum for moistening copy sheets fed thereto, and sheet 2. In a duplicating machine of the character described, the combination of a rotatable drum, means comprising a driving member adapted by Acontinuous actuation to give said drum a rotary movement and then to hold the drum stationary for a short period, means for forwarding copy sheets past said drum, a table for holding copy sheets in position to be fed therealong to said forwarding means, bars slidably mounted at opposite sides of said table, sheet feeding means operatively connected with said bars so as to be movable thereby along the table toward and from said drum upon reciprocatory movement of the bars for feeding copy sheets one at a time to said forwarding means, means connecting said bars together for causing them to move in unison, and means for giving said bars an operative stroke for feeding a copy sheet toward the drum at each period when said drum is standing stationary, saidmeans comprising two oppositely extending pivotally mounted members positioned at different levels so as to overlap at their end 'portions,the upwardly extending member being operatively connected with said bars for reciprocating them and the downwardly extending member being in engagement with said upwardly extending member for actuating it.
3. In a duplicating machine of the character described, the combination of a rotatable drum, means comprising a driving member adapted by continuous actuation to give said drum a rotary movement and then to hold the drum stationary for a short period, means for forwarding copy sheets past said drum, a table for holding copy sheets in position to be fed therealong to said forwarding means, sheet feeding' means-movable along the table toward and from said drum for feeding copy sheets one at a time to said forwarding means, a rock shaft extending across below the drum, two arms rigidly mounted at their lower ends on said rock shaft and connected at their upper ends with said sheet feeding means, a spring urging said arms in the direction for movement of the sheet feeding means away fromthe drum, and means for swinging said arms in the direction for carrying the sheet feeding means toward the drum at each period when said drum is standing stationary, said arm swinging means comprising a downwardly extending pivotally mounted member engaging one of said arms for swinging it an'd means for giving said downwardly extending member an operative swinging movement'in timed relation to the rotation oi' said drum.
4. In a duplicating machine of the character described, the combination of a rotatable drum, means comprising a driving member adapted by continuous actuation to give said drum a rotary movement and then to hold the drum stationary for a short period, means for lforwarding copy sheets past said drum, a table for holding copy sheets in position to be fed therealong to said forwarding means, sheet feeding means movable along the table toward and from said drum for feeding copy sheets one at a time to said forwarding means, a rock shaft extending across below the drum, two-arms rigidly mounted at their lower ends on said rock shaft and connected at their upper ends with said sheet feeding means, a spring urging said arms in the direction for movement of the sheet feeding means away from the drum, a cam, means for giving said cam a complete revolution for each complete cycle of movement of said driving means, and means actuated by said cam for swinging said arms in the direction for carrying the sheet feeding means toward the drum at each period when said drum is standing stationary, said arm swinging means comprising a pivotally mounted member extending past said cam in position to be actuated thereby and adapted to engage one of said arms so as to swing it in Itimed relation to the rotation of said drum.
5. In a duplicating machine of the character described, the combination of a rotatable drum, means comprising a driving member adapted by continuous actuation to give said drum a rotary movement and then to hold the drum stationary for a short period, means for forwarding copy sheets past said drum, a table for holding copy sheets in position to be fed therealong to said forwarding means, sheet feeding means movable along the table toward and from said drum for feeding copy sheets one at a time to said forwarding means, a rock shaft extending across below the drum, two arms rigidly mounted at their lower ends on said rock shaft and connected at their upper ends with said sheet feeding means, a spring urging said arms in the direction for movement of the sheet feeding means away from the drum, a lever pivotally mounted on ,a horizontal axis above one of said arms and adapted upon an operative stroke to engage said arm and move it in the direction for carrying the sheet feeding means toward the drum, a cam s adapted by engagement with said lever to give it an operative stroke upon each complete revolution of the drum, and means for rotating said cam in such timed relation as to move said sheet feeding means toward the drum at each period when the drum is standing stationary.
