RITZERFELD ET AL 2,868,116 APPARATUS FOR PRINTING SPACED TEXT PORTIONS ADJACENT EACH OTHER Filed April 27. 1955 4 Sheets-Sheet 4 cvevkar RWzew f ymiwwsl Q. S+Mm United States APPARATUS FOR PRINTING SPACED TEXT PORTIONS ADJACENT EACH OTHER Wilhelm Ritzerfeld, Berlin-Dahlein, and Gerhard Ritzerfeld, Berlin-Grunewald, Germany 1 The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for printing spaced text portions adjacent each other on a copy sheet, and more particularly to an apparatus including a plurality of cam means for actuating a pressure roller to engage a printing roller only when desired text portions pass through a printing line defined by the printing roller and a pressure roller.
In known printing apparatus, and more particularly in duplicating machines for printing from mirror script master sheets, it is known to print from the master sheet a head portion and one or several consecutive lines adjacent the head portion. However, the devices of the known art have the disadvantage that it is impossible to print a plurality of spaced and variable text portions adjacent each other on a copy sheet.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome disadvantages of the known art, and to provide an apparatus and method for printing a plurality of spaced text portions adjacent each other on a copy sheet.
It is another object of the present invention to provide for a variation of the number of lines printed from each text portion.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide for an adjustment of the apparatus permitting selecting of desired portions of the text Which are to be printed adjacent each other on copy sheets.
With these objects in view the present invention mainly consists in a method for printing a plurality of text portions spaced on a printing form from each other in one direction comprising the steps of moving a copy sheet and the printing form in contact with each other in the direction through a printing station while a first portion of the text passes through the printing station; moving the copy sheet and the printing form out of contact while the text moves relative to the printing station and to the copy sheet until a second portion of the text arrives at the printing station; moving the copy sheet and the printing form into contact with each other at the printing station while the second portion of the text passes through the printing station, and repeating the steps until a selected number of text portions is printed adjacent each other on the copy sheet.
The apparatus according to the present invention mainly comprises a rotary printing roller adapted to support a printing form having a text thereon having lines extending in axial direction of the printing roller, the printing roller being adapted to move the printing form through a printing line; a pressure roller cooperating with the printing roller at the printing line; movable supporting means supporting the pressure roller for movement between an operative position engaging the printing roller and an inoperative position spaced from the printing roller, the rollers being adapted to grip a supplied copy sheet along the printing line and to transport the same in printing engagement with the printing roller only when the pressure roller is in the operative position; holding means for holding the copy sheet stationary when the pressure roller is in the inoperative positionj and a plurality of 2,868,116 Patented Jan. 13, 1959 shifting means connected to the printing roller and actuated by rotation thereof, the shifting means engaging the movable supporting means and moving the same and therewith the pressure roller repeatedly during each revolution of the duplicating roller from the inoperative position to the operative position for printing spaced portions of the text on the printing roller adjacent each other on a copy sheet.
The shifting means are preferably cam means which include a plurality of cam discs having cam tracks coopcrating with cam follower rollers on the supporting means of the pressure roller. The cam means are shif table so that the number of cam discs cooperating with the re-,
spective cam follower can be adjusted. Thereby the effective length of the cam track is varied whereby the number of lines printed from the respective text portion is adjusted.
The cam means of the cam device are turnable relative to each other for selecting desired spaced portions of the printed text for adjacent print on the copy sheet.
The printing form, or master sheet, which is attached to the printing roller is arranged with the lines thereof extending in axial direction of the printing roller. By shifting the pressure roller into engagement with the printing form whenever a desired portion of the text passes through the printing line, and by holding the copy sheet stationary while undesired portions of the printed text pass through the printing line, it is possible to print desired portions of the text adjacent each other. J
In the event that it is desired to have a space between portions printed on the copy sheet, the copy sheet is transported while the printing roller and pressure roller are spaced from each other so that no printing takes place.
According to the present invention it is possible to print a head portion of the printed text, whose position can be adjusted, and in addition thereto a plurality of selected spaced text portions including a variable number of lines adjacent each other on the copy sheet.
The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims; The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of an apparatus according to the present invention;
vFig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line A-B in Fig. 1;
'Fig. 3 is a side view of a cam device used in the arrangement of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a side view, partly in section taken CD in Fig. 5, of a cam shifting device;
Fig. 5 is an axial sectional view illustrating a cam device according to the present invention on an enlarged scale;
Pig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of a master sheet;
Figs. 7 and 8 are longitudinal sectional views of copy sheets printed in accordance with the present invention; and
Fig. 9 is a cross-sectional view taken on line E'F in Fig. 5 illustrating the operating means for the cam shifting device.
I Referring now to the drawings, and more particularly to Fig. 1, on a printing drum 1 a master sheet 2 is held by a clamping device 3. A pressure roller 5 cooperates with the'printing drum l, which is a duplicating roller according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention. The pressure roller 5 is pivotable about a shaft 4 and mounted on movable supporting means 20, 21, 22, 23 permitting to move the.pressure roller between an on line operative position engaging the, duplicating roller 1 along a printing line located in the printing plane 28 and an inoperative position spaced therefrom. A copy sheet 24 is fed by the transporting rollers 26, 27 constituting supply means to the printing line where it is gripped by the rollers 1 and for printing when the roller 5 is in its operative position. When the roller 5 is in its inoperative position, the holding means 125 maintains the copy sheet stationary.
The movable supporting means of the pressure roller 5 are shifted by operating levers 16, 17 and provi d with cam follower rollers I16 17 and 323 and mounted on a common shaft 19 which is turnably mounted on stationary supporting means such as the casing of the apparatus.
The shifting of the pressure roller 3 is controlled by a cam device which includes the following elements: a head cam means 7 which is associated with the head portion of the text on the master sheet 2, a set of cam discs 8 8 8 having cam track portions for extending the length of the cam track of the head cam means, cam discs 9 9 and having various effective cam track lengths for printing variable head portions of the master sheet, and cam discs 16 Hi and 1G for printing one, two or three lines of the text of the master Sheets. The cam discs, excepting earn 7, are adjustable in axial direction and can be also turned relative to each other as will be described hereinafter in more detail. In order to be able to print the master sheet in its entirety, a duplicating cam llll is connected to the set of cams S by means of the bolt 12. The cam units 8 8 3 ii is shiftable in axial direction but adjustment to a desired length of the printed head portion must be carried out in the work shop.
In order to obtain a synchronous run of the cam device with the printing drum 1, the shaft 6 which supports the cam device, is driven through gears 1- and 1:? from the gear 13 which is connected for rotation to the printing drum 1.
The cam means 7, 8 to 8 9 to 9 and Ittl to 1G and 11; cooperate with the operating levers it], 3.7 and 18 through cam follower rollers 16 17 and 155 respectively. in accordance with the effective length of the cam track engaging the cam follower rollers, the shaft 19 and thereby the supporting means 26 of the pressure roller 5' are shifted.
When, for instance, the set of cams 9 9' 9 and 9 is shifted in axial direction relative to the cam follower roller 17. the latter first cooperates only with the cam disc 9- then with cam discs 9 and 9 etc. so that the time period for which the pressure roller 5 is shifted into its operative position is adjusted since the cam track formed by the cam tracks of cam discs 9 and is longer than the cam track of cam disc 9 alone, as can be clearly seen in Fig. 3. The movement of the operating levers 16, 1'7 and 18 is transmitted through the lever 2d, and the toggle levers 21, 22 and 23 to the pressure roller 5.
The cam discs 9 to 9 which are associated with the intermediate variable head portion of the master sheet,
' and the cam discs to 10 which are associated with the lines of the text of the master sheet are turned by means of a ratchet device which is operated by levers 33, or by levers 34, 35 and 36 which stepwise turn the cams ltlt to 16 and 9 to 9 Any one of the levers 34, 35 and 36 can be selectively actuated so that the cam tracks of the cam means jump one, two or three lines, as desired.
The arrangement of the cam device is illustrated in Fig. 5 on an enlarged scale. Referring now to Fig. 5, the cam shaft 6 is driven through the gears 13, 1 and from the shaft la of the'printing roller 1. The head arm 7 is secured to the shaft '6 by means of the carrier 38 which is fixedly connected to shaft 6 by a key 39 and a pin 40. The set of cam discs 8 to 8 is connected by means of a bolt 12 to an axially movable carrier means 41 including a hub portion and a flange portion. The carrier 41 is mounted on the shaft 6 non-rotatable and movable in axial direction by means of key 42. Since the set of cams 8 to 8 is movable with the carrier 41 in axial direction, the cam tracks of the cams 8 alone, 8 and 8 or 8 8 and 8 respectively, can be placed into position for actuating the cam follower roller 16 whereby the length of time during which the pressure roller Siengages the printing roller 1 is adjusted. Further axial shifting of the unit brings the duplicating cam 11 into engagement with the cam follower roller 16 for printing the entire text of the master sheet 2.
A ratchet carrier means 43 is fixedly connected to the shaft 6. A locking pawl and a shifting pawl 29 are turnably mounted on a pin 44 on the ratchet carrier 43 and are under the action of springs 45 and 46, respectively. The locking pawl 30 engages the ratchet wheel 47 which is mounted together with the chain wheel 43 on the carrier means 37 which includes a hub portion and a flange portion. The carrier means 37 is turnably mounted on the shaft 6 and is urged by a spring means 59 against the locking pawl 3t A support 59 is mounted on the carrier means 37 for axial movement by means of a key 49 and carries the cam discs 9 to 9 which are connected thereto by a bolt 32a. When the support is shifted in axial direction on the carrier means 37, the cams h to 9 are selectively brought into engagement with the cam follower roller 17 on the operating lever 17. By operation of the ratchet device 29, 3t) and 47, it is possible to adjust the position of the cams 9 to relative to cam means 8 to 11 in peripheral direction so that the same engage earlier or later the cam follower roller 17 of the operating lever 17 during rotation of the cam device.
The member 15 is fixed on the shaft 6 and carries on bolt 51 the locking pawl 32 and the shifting pawl 31 which are turned by springs 2 and 53, respectively, into engagement with the ratchet wheel 54 which is secured to the carrier means 37a together with the chain wheel 55.
The carrier means 37a is turnably mounted on the shaft 6 and is urged by the spring means 56 against the locking pawl 32. The support 5'7 is mounted on the carrier means 37a shiftable in axial direction but nonrotatable. A key 58 connects the members 37a and 57. The cam discs 30 to 10 which are associated with the lines of the master sheet are secured to the flange portion of the support 57 by a bolt 1212. Since carrier is shiftable in axial direction on shaft 6, groups of the earns 16 to 165 can be selectively brought into engagement with the cam follower 18 on the operating lever 18. By operation of the ratchet device 31, 32, 54- it is possible to adjust the relative angular position on shaft 6 the moment in which the cams Ed to 16 are effective on the cam follower roller 13 and actuate the pressure roller 5.
The chain wheels as and serve for winding up the ratchet devices 29, 3t), 47 and 31, 32, 5e, respectively. for returning the set of cams 9 to 9 and 19 to 19 to initial positions. All cams can be adjusted in peripheral direction by loosening the bolts 12, 12a and 12b which pass through circumferential slots in the cams. For the sake of clarity, the arrangement illustrated in Fig. 5 is not shown in detail in Fig. 2.
Referring now to Fig. 9, the axial shifting of the set of cams ltl to I19 and of the associated support is carried out by means of the operating rod 61, a slide 63 sliding on the bolt 6 and the triangular lever 65 which is turnable about the bolt 66. The pivotal movement of the lever 65 is transmitted through the link 67' to alever 63. Lever 68 is mounted on the shaft 6) and has a cylindrical portion '70 provided with a helical groove 71. A fork-shaped lever 72 extends over the portion 70 of the lever 68, and a pin 73, which is fixed to the sleeve 74 of the fork lever 72, engages the helical groove 71. When the lever 68 is pivoted, the fork lever 72 is shifted in axial direction due to the action of the pin 73 in the helical groove 71, and thereby shifts with its pin 75 the support 57 and the cams to 10 The sets of cams 8 to 8 11 and 9 to 9 are shifted in a similar manner in axial direction. The shifted position of the abovedescribed members is illustrated in broken lines in Fig. 9.
The turning of the cam means 10 to 10 in circumferential is carried out by the ratchet device 29, 30 and 54. While the printing roller 1 is at a standstill, the-manually operated key 76, turnable about pin 77, is actuated, whereby through the link 78 the lever 33 is turned about pin 66. The roller 33 associated with the same engages the shifting pawl 29 which turns about pin 51 so that its point 79 engages a recess between the teeth of the ratchet wheel 54. Due to the action of the guiding face 80 of the shifting pawl 29 which abuts against a face '81 of the locking pawl 30, the same is lifted out of the region of the teeth of the ratchet wheel 54. Under the action of the spring means 56, the ratchet wheel 54 is pulled together with the next following tooth against the point 79 of the shifting pawl 29. When the key 76 is released, the
spring 82 retracts the key 76 and the linkage means 78, 33 1 into initial position engaging the stop 83. Due to the action of the spring 46, the shifting pawl 29 is disengaged from the ratchet wheel 54 while the spring 45 urges the locking pawl 30 into engagement with the next following tooth of the ratchet wheel 54. During this operation, the ratchet wheel 54 and thereby the line cams 10 and 10 have been shifted one step corresponding to one line spacing in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation indicated by the arrow .6.
The above operation can be automatically carried out during each revolution of the printing roller 1 without actuating the key 76. v
The hand lever 84 for the automatic shifting of the line cam discs 10 to 10 moves the support 85 which is mounted on pins 64 and 86. At first, only the shifting lever 87 and the roll 34 mounted thereon are moved into the path of the shifting pawl 29 so that the shifting pawl 29 performs one shifting operation, as described above, during one revolution of the printing roller 1.
' This corresponds only to the action of the cam 10 on the cam follower roller 18 If due to further operation of the rod 61, the cams 10 or 10 are brought into engagement with the roller 18 the slide 63 turns the lever 89 on the stationary pin 90 bymeans of pin 88.
Due to this turning of the lever 89, at first the carrier 91 with the associated roller 36 is raised into the path of the shifting pawl 29, so that the shifting pawl 29 shifts twice through the rolls 36 and 34 during one revolution of the printing roller 1. When the slide 63 is further shifted, the lever 89 pivots without causing a change in the position of the roll 36, so that also roll 35 acts on the lever 92.
When the automatic shifting means are disconnected, the levers 91 and 92 are disengaged from the lever 89, and the rolls 35, 36 are moved out of the path of the shifting pawl 29, and together with the lever 87 and the roll 34.
. In order to return the line cam means 10 to 10 to its initial positions, the chain wheel 55 is turned through relative to the other cam means.
Fig. 6 shows a master sheet having a head portion K, an intermediate head portion WK, a portion Z including a plurality of lines, and the portion Z extending through one line. These portions are to be printed adjacent each other on a copy sheet 24, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, al-
though they are spaced from each other on the master sheet 2. Fig. 7 shows a head portion K, the intermediate head portion WK and the line portion Z printed adjacent each other. As shown in Fig. 8 by appropriate operation of the cam device, another line Z can be printed adjacent the head portion and the intermediate head portion.
In this manner, it is possible to print from an original master sheet selected portions required for a particular order sheet or accounting operation. Such selected portions appear on the printed copy adjacent each other. It will be understood that this constitutes a great advantage for printing bills and order sheets in industrial plants.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of printing apparatus and methods differing from the types described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in printing apparatus for printing text portions of a master sheet selectively and adjacent each other on a copy sheet, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.
' Without further analysis, the foregoing will. so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.
