SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,447, dated December 4, 1883.

following description, in connection with the x accompanying drawings, is a specication,

My invention relates to a device ior discharg ing the contents of bottles, `especially those filled with aerated liquids, and is intended to be used in connection with a bottle having a stopper provided with a passage controlled by a valve.
The discharging device consists, essentially, of a tube adapted to enter the said passage in the stopper and unseat the valve, thus permitting the liquid to escape and pass through the tube, which may be withdrawn when a sufficient quantity of liquid has been discharged to allow the valve to close and retain the remainder ofthe liquid without escape of the gases therefrom.
The discharge-tube is preferably provided "with a ange or projection, by which it may be forced into the passage inthe stopper by the fingers of the operator, and it is also provided with a yielding washer, which serves to pack the space between the tube and stopper, to prevent the escape of any liquid around the tube, the `said washer also operating by its elasticity to withdraw the tube from the passage as soon asit is relieved from the pressure of the fingers of the operator.
The discharging device is shown in this instance as constructed to operate with a bottlestopper invented by me, for which Letters Patent No. 252,059 were granted June 10, 1882, to which reference may be had. The discharge-tube has lateral inletpassages near the end which enters the stopper, to admit the liquid to the interior of the tube. p Figure 1 shows in longitudinal section a bottle and its stopper provided withv a discharge-tube embodying this invention, .and Fig. 2 a side elevation of Athe said dischargetube.

anda rubber or flexible packing, c, fitted around the said passage b and entering the neck of the bottle, the said packing having i into the said passage it unseats the valve d, to`
permit the liquid to escape. The lower end of the said tube is itself closed by the valve d, and in order topermit the liquid to enter and pass through the tube the latter is provided with one or more inletpassages, 2, in its sides, they being shown in this instance as formed by slotting the end of the tube for a short distance. The discharge-tube c is provided with a yielding washer, t', (shown as a ball of soit rubber,) which is prevented from longitudinal movement on the said tube by a flange, m.' Vhen the tube is forced into the stopper to unseat the valve d, as shown in` Fig. l, the
stopper and the exterior of the tube, to prevent the liquid from escaping through the passage b around the tube. The flange or projection m facilitates the operation of pressing the tube e in the stopper, and the washer t' by tube out as soon as it is released by the operator, permitting the valve d to close. The bottle will be held in inverted position while the liquid is being withdrawn, so as to prevent the escape of the gases, and it will be seen that any desired amount may be withdrawn at any time without permitting the gas to escape from the liquid left in the bottle, so that it will be kept in sparkling condition until all is withdrawn.
I claiml. As an improved article of manufacture, a dischargingdevice for drawing the contents of a bottle having a stopper provided with a passage and valve, it consisting of a discharging-tube adapted to enter the said passage and unseat the said valve, und means to pack the space between the said tube and stopper, substantially as described.
2. The discharge-tube provided with a projection, combined with the elastic Washer surrounding` the said tube, and engaged by the said projection to co-operztte with a bottlestopper provided with a passage and valve, substantially as described.
3. The discharge-tube provided with a 12mteral inlet-passage und a iange or projection,
combined with the Washer surrounding,` the said tube, und prevented from moving longitudinally thereon by the said flange, Substantially as described.
