This opening is provided at one of its ends with a valve 'seat 5 for cooperation with an axially displaceable closure element 6. The improvements introduced into the new -faucet are characterized in that the said control elements include, for the closure of the faucet, at least one expansion coil spring 7 and, for the opening of the same, at least one `axially displaceable element 8, one end of which, jutting out beyond the tubular body 1, is borne upon the free end portion of one of the arms 9a of the suitably arranged rocking element 9, the other arm 9b of which is operatively engaged with a rockingly sustained lever 10 having an arm 10a provided with an extension 11 pivoted at one of its ends.
The expansion coil spring 7 is freely wound around the perimeter of a cylindrical projection 12 fixed at one of its ends to the body of a removable lid 13 closing the open free end of a tubular branch 14 integral with the body 1 of the faucet or cock, the said cylindrical projection 12 being provided with an axial cavity 15 in which is freely housed a movable pin 16 provided, in the usual manner, intermediate its ends with .the plate or closure element 6 bearing a washer (not shown) made of `any suitable material and secured to the plate in any suitable manner. this position, the control lever '10 is `pivotedftrom' its; .posi- "tion' I to its position II. 4Ihis change f positionV increases the lineal distance between the joint 27 and the free end of the extension 11, which causes the rocking element 9 to pivot at 24 until the inclination of the extension 11 is inverted at the joint 32 which is so limited by the abutment of the said extension 11 against the tooth 29 as to exclude any possibility of an undue return movement of the control lever 10 and, at the same time, to secure the said lever 10 in position II. When the rocking element is pivoted in the above manner, it causes the element 8 to be axially displaced, the projection 21 of the latter pushing the closure element 6 off the seat 5 of the opening 4 and submitting the spring 7 to tension or compression. The clearing of the passage 4 allows of the ow of the liquid lfrom the inlet through the portion a of the passage 2 to the portion b of the said passage 2, whence `it is eventually discharged through the open outlet end of the tubular body 1. When it is desired to interrupt the flow of liquid, it is only necessary to operate the control lever 10 pivoting it somewhat from its position II towards its position I so as to pass the point of inversion of the articulation of the elements 10 and 11 and to set free the compressed spring, whereby its expansion causes the automatic closure of the passage 2 due to the closure of the opening 4 by means of the element 6.
Should it be desired to open the faucet only for a moment and without securing the open position in the above specified manner, the plate 31 of the projection 30 'is pressed down causing the rocking element 9 to pivot in the above specified manner, whereby the element 8 is displaced and the closure means 6 lifted off the seat 5 of the opening 4 allowing of the discharge of the liquid whilst the said plate 31 is submitted to pressure, and as soon as it is interrupted, the spring 7 expands and causes the closure of the opening 4.
The extraordinary advantages offered by the improved faucet or cock may be fully appreciated from the foregoing specification. It allows of a better operation of the same in two different forms, for which purpose two control means are provided to be used alternatively as the case may be. Furthermore, it should be pointed out, that the manufacture of this improved faucet oters no diiculties whatever and its constitutive parts are readily available. Another extremely important feature of the improved faucet consists in that its parts are not subject to twisting thereby allowing of a wider range of materials for its manufacture.
It is to be understood that certain changes of detail and construction may be introduced in the herein disclosed embodiments of the present invention without departing from its real scope as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A faucet comprising a hollow body having an inlet passage, an outlet passage, and an inner partition separating said inlet and outlet passages, said partition having an opening therein through which said inlet and outlet passages are adapted to be placed in communication, a valve member for closing said opening, a rod guided for axial movement in said hollow body, said rod serving to carry said valve member, one end of said rod projecting outwardly of said hollow body, a rocker member pivotally mounted intermediate of its ends to said hollow body, one end of said rocker member engaging said rod whereby said valve member may be moved away from said opening in said partition upon rocking movement of said rocker member, an operating lever pivotally mounted intermediate, of its ends to said hollow body at a point remote from and above the pivotal connection of said rocker member with said hollow body, a connecting link pivotally mounted at one end to said lever and at the other end engaging the other end of said rocker member whereby the latter may be rocked as the distance between the said other end of said connecting linkand the pivotal mounting of said lever is .4 varied upon pivotal movement of said lever, and said lever and connecting link when aligned serving to hold said valve member in an open position through interaction with said rocker member and said rod.
2. A faucet comprising a hollow body having a rear portion constituting the inlet passage connectable to piping, a front portion constituting the outlet passage, and an inner partition dividing the cavity of the hollow body and separating said inlet and outlet passages, said partition having an opening therein through which said inlet and outlet passages are adapted to be placed in communication, a valve member for closing said opening, -said body having an opening therein communicating with said inlet passage, a lid closing said last named opening, a cylindrical projection extending from the inner face of said lid and having an axial guide cavity therein for receiving the upper portion of a rod carrying said valve member, the lower portion of said rod projecting outwardly of said hollow body, a rocker member pivotally mounted intermediate of its ends to said hollow body,
rone end of said rocker member engaging said rod where- Vby said valve member may be moved away from said opening in said partition upon rocking movement of said rocker member, an operating lever pivotally mounted intermediate of its ends to said hollow body at a point remote from and above the pivotal connection of said rocker member with said hollow body, a connecting link pivotally mounted at one end to one end of said lever and at the other end engaging said other end of said rocker member whereby the latter may be rocked upon pivotal movement of said lever, the other end of said lever serving as a first operating handle, and an arm member extending from said rocker member adjacent the pivotal mounting thereof and serving as a second operating handle.
