VALVE Filed March e. 1928 Patented Nov. 18, 193@ lJdLZBS PAT FFECE VALVE Application ed March 9, 3.328. Serial No, 280,3i0.
rIhis invention relatesto certain new and useful improvements in valves and refers vmore particularly to that type designed to be incorporated in the sewerage and drainage system of abuilding.
The primary object of thisinvention is to 'improve and simplify the construction of drain valves and to provide means for manually actuating the same. i
Another object of this invention is to provide a drain valve of the character described having means for manually actuating the valve proper which means may be located at a remote point.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as `the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter.described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the 'scope of the claims.`
In the accompanying` drawing, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the bestmode I have so far devised for thek practical application of the principles thereof, and inwhich:
The single figure is a side elevational view of a valve embodying myv invention, parts thereof being broken away and in section to more clearly illustrate structural details.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like numerals designate'like parts throughout the several views, 5 designates a casting forming the body of the valve, which is substantially inverted T shaped, the transverse portion or head ofthe T having its ends 6 and 7 provided with means for connection with a main sewer and a building drain, respectively. Themain sewer is adapted to be connected with the outlet end 6 by a suitable pipe or conduit 8 and the inlet end 7 is adapted to be connected with the building drain through, a suitable drain pipe 9.
The vertical portion l0 of the valve body terminates in a flange ll to which a head or cover member l2 is adapted to be secure-d by cap screws 13, a packing l-l being inserted in a recess formed in the underside of the cover member to seal the joint between the flange member and the cover. Positioned inwardly of the inlet end 7 is an aperture-d wall l5 which has a flanged sleeve secured to its inner side by cap screws 17 passed through the flange. The inner end of the sleeve 16 opposite its flanged end is tapered, as illustrated, with its longest wall at the bottom and forms a seat with which a valve 1S cooperates to close the passage between the outlet- 6 and the inlet 7.
The valve I8 is pivotally mounted, as at 19, from an arm or projection 20 extended inwardly and owardly from the upper portion of the sleeve flange and is provided with upstanding spaced.` lugs or ears 2l which are strengthened by webs 22. rIhe outer ends of the lugs 2l are apertured to receive a pivot pin to pivotally connect a linlr 2l vtherewith, the linlr being pivotally connected, as at 2.5, with a downwardly extending bifurcated portion 26 of a guide member 27. rlhe pivot 25 is positioned medially of the ends of the link 24 and its end opposite its pivotal connection 23 is provided with a rounded portion 28 which abuts an arcuate wall 29 forming the inner wall of the vertical portion 10 of the body member.,
The guide member 27 is longitudinally slidably mounted wit-hin an upwardly extending tube or pipe 30 threaded, at its lower end, in
an aperture 3l formed in an upwardly eX- tended portion of the cover member and having its upper end threaded to receive a substantially l. shaped bracket member 32. Ribs or fins 33 extending radially from the guide member 27 guide the movement of the member within the pipe.y The guide member 27 is connected with a manually operated handle member 34C by a connecting rod or tube 35 positioned within the pipe 30 and passing upwardly through the bracket member 32 to have its outermost end connected with the operating handle by a fork member 3G pivotally connected with the handle, as at 37. A stuning gland 88 of any suitable const-ruction seals the sliding joint between the operating rod and the aperture in the bracket 32 through which it extends.
An arm 39 extended laterally from the bracket member 32 pivotally mounts one end 40 of an upwardly extending connecting link Lll to the outer end 42 of which the operating i handle 3% is pivoted, movement of the handle .the handle member is provided with-a threaded eye bolt 4:5, the loop of which is passed around the handle and the threaded end be- ,ing inserted through the slot of the extension la to have a wing nut 46 threaded. thereon to secure the handle inreither of tions. i l c From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying-drawing, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention of the character described apertains, that I have provideda drain valve for preventing the backing up of a sewer into the housedrain, which its posi-` Vis positively operated by manual means,
which means may be positioned remotefrom the valve.V Y
What l claim asmy invention is:
l. In a drain valve including a bodymember having an inlet and an outlet, a valve within the body` memberV and adapted to either communicate or disconnect the inlet from the outlet, a link extended from theV valve and having one end abutting an inner vwall of the body member when the valve is in closed position, a cover member '.carried by thebody member, a tube extended from .the coverY member, an operatingrod positioned within the tube, means connecting one Cil end Vof the rod with the link, said means forming af guide for the rod to maintain the same properlyspaced from the walls of the Y tube, and means connected with the free end ofthe rod for actuating the rod to either of 2; :In a drain valve including a substantially invertedT-shaped body member having the `ends of itshead adaptedfor .con- Y nection with drain 'pipesfa sleeve member mounted within "the body member adjacentV one end thereof, the inner end of the sleeve member .providing a valve seat, avalve ,engageable with the Valve seat, means pivotally mounting the valve from the sleeve member,
a cover member closing the open'stem of the invertedTshaped body member, and means Y for actuating the valve toV and from closed i' position includinga tube carried by the cover d member, a rodV slidable in the tube, means connecting one end of the rod with the valve, Y and actuating means carried by the remote end of the tube for moving the rod to open and close the valve. n
3. In a drain valve of the character described, abody member having opposed open ends adapted for connection with drain-pipes, a flange formed on the body member adjacent one end, a sleeve member fixed to said flange,
the inner face of said sleeve member forming d a valve seat, a valve engageable with the 'seat to shut off communication between the open ends of the body member, means'pivotallyV mounting theV valve from the sleeve member, a cover; member closingthe open top of the body member, and means for movpositionV including a tube extended from the cover member, a rod slidably, mounted within the tube, a llink pivotallyV connected with the inner end of the rod at a medial point, means pivotally connecting one end of the link with the 'valve wherebydownward movement of the rodV causes the free end of the link to abut the inner wall of the body member and,y close the valve on its seat, and actuating means carried by the remote end of the tube for movingrthe rod to open and close the valve. Y i i 4. In a drain valve including abodylmember having a pair of ports and an open top,
sleeve member mounted within the body member adjacent one of said ports and khaving a valve seat, a valve pivotally mounted from said sleeve member and engageable'withf said valve seat to shutoff communication between the body member ports', aV cover member closing theV opentop of the body member, meansrfor actuating the valve to. and from closed position including, a tube carried by the cover, a Vrod slidable in the tube, means connecting one end of the rod with the Yvalve,`andY actuating means *carriedV by Y'the-remote end ofthe tube for moving the rod to/open and close thevalve. Y
ln testimony whereof l hereuntoaliix my signature. r 1 f ,f ROBERT O. VRGHHAN.
