B. Wigwam as i l f If ider filo WALTER B. CULLUM. O3." GHAFTQE, WEST VIRGINIA" VALVE.
To It whom 2'15 may concern Be it known that I, Wanna B. CULLUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grafton, in the county of Taylor and State of \Vest Virginia. have invented new and useful improvements in Valves of which the i' lloiving a specification.
T he invention relates to an improvement in valves. and particularly to a valve de signed for controlling the flow of Water in the cooling ol plnngers in hottle'production, wherein. the low of the cooling liquid requires to he opened and shut of? instantly at predetermined points in the move ment of the plunger.
The main object of the present invention is the provision; of a. valve constructed With a view to an instant closing of the outlet, while at the same time constriiieting the parts so that they may be readily accessible for renewal or repair.
The invention in the preferred form of details will he described in the following specification. reference being had particu larly to the accompanying d swings, in \vh ieh Figure l is an elevation of the valve. 2 a vertical central section, partly in elevation, of the same. 3, 4i, and 5 are pers 'iective details.
Referring particularly to the accompany ing draivin 's the in'iproved valve comprises a casino 1. termed approximately centrally of its lengtl'i with a restricted passage 2, opening immediately above the same into a valve seat and above the latter into a pressure chamber 4'. The restricted pas opens below the same into an. og eratin chamber which latter is praeticallyof l'miforih hero throughout its length, opening, through the and of the c A spherical valve 6 is arranged Within the casing to cooperate with the seat 3, and helow the valve an operating; plunger 7 is pro vided for the actuation of said valve. The plunger includes a lower portion 8 of uniform diameter. an intermei liate 'iortion 9 ol? slightly less diameter han the ijliaineter of the operating chamber 5 and ripper portion '10 adapted to contact with the valve. The upper portion preferably of angular shape in cross s Lion so as to prov-ice free passages al'iout the same lengthwise the stricted passage to permit the flow of Water lengthwise said portion. The operating member is held in position. Within the casing Specification of Letters Patent.

by a sleeve 11 exteriorly threaded to cooperate with the appropriate interior threads of the casing, the interior bore of the sleeve being enlarged adjacent its upper end to rece ve packing 12 secured in place and appro ii-lately compressed by gland 13 threaded into the sleeve. The upper end of the sleeve is designed to he engaged by the dislg ll of the operating member to limit the downward n'iovement of the latter, a spring 14 living coiled about the upper portion of the operating member between the shoulder of the using at the lower end of the restricted passage 2 and the disk 9. The springopez ates to move the member 7 to its lowered or inoperative position, in which position the relatively upper portion 10 of said member is free of contact and below the valve 6, permitting :tull and free seating of the valve.
A support for actuating the lever is provided in the member 15, comprising an annular terminal 16 to fit against the lower end of the casing and a depending arm 17 extending below and in. parallel relation to the casing and formed near its lower free end with a slot 18. The lower end of the sleeve 11 provided with nut 19 of angular contour to bear against and secure the siui iort in place. The lower or free end of the portion 8 of the operating? member is transversely slotted at 20. forming" rounded upper walls. the slot receiving an operating lever 31 pivoted at in the slot with one of its ends fitting loosely in the slot 18 of the arm 17. The power end of the lever is formed with an o ieninp' 253 permitting the attachment-ct the lever to anv suitable operatia means, though it is obvious that it with equal facility he operated directly hand. The upper end oil the casing lav forms the inlet, the outlet 2-lheinfz formed laterally oi? the (ZilSlilPf immediately below the restricted passage 2. said outlet opening: directly from the operating chamber 5. The inlet end oi? the casinf closed by the coupling: nut 25 threaded on to the end of the casing", and formed with a central threaded aperture 25 to receive nine connection 27, by which fluid is admitted to the valve. The diameter of the opening '26 is less than the diameter of the pressure chamlNl i. thereby providing a shoulder at the upper end oi said olm'mher between which a; l the valve 6 is arranged a spring 28 ten-' sioned to assist in seating tllGfl'ELlVQ.
The operating of the improved valve will be fairly apparent from the above descrip:
and an operating chamber below said pas' sage, sald valve having an lnlet leading to the pressure chamber and an outlet leading from the operating chamber immediately below the restricted passage, a valve seat formed in the casing at the juncture of the pressure chamber and restricted passage, a
valve for said seat, pressure means bearlng upon the valve to normally seat the same,
a valve operating member movable in the operating chamber and 1n the restricted passage, said member being of a size to permit .the restricted passage to remain open at all times, a sleeve threaded in the casing and forming the lower limit of the operating chamber, a sprlng arranged in the operat' ing chamber and normally maintaining the operating member in its retracted position,
a support having an annular terminal to fitover the sleeve beyond the end of the easing a nut threaded upon the promoting end of the sleeve to secure the support in place,
a lever loosely mounted in said suppe and connected with the operating member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signa ture in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER a comma.
