STANLEY B. FRf/BE/PG United States Patent STRIP ASSEMBLY FOR USE IN PREPARING LISTS PHOTOGRAPHICALLY Stanley B. Freiberg, Cincinnati, Ohio; Rosalie B. Freiberg, executrix of said Stanley B. Freiberg, deceased, assignor to Acme Visible Records, Inc., Crozet, Va., a corporation of Delaware Application September 2, 1955, Serial No. 532,273
2 Claims. (Cl. 129-16) This invention relates to record card assemblies and to cards for use in forming a self-supporting record assembly.
An object of this invention is to provide an assembly of cards which lock together with a portion of each card exposed to form a self-supporting record which can readily be revised by removing selected cards or insertion of additional cards therein and in which the assembled cards lie fiatwise against each other without any auxiliary or common member connecting the cards together. I
A further object of this invention is to provide such an assembly in which hooks and tabs integral with one edge of'a card fit into slots in an adjacent card to hold the cards in assembled relation.
A further object of this invention is to provide a record assembly of this type in which the slots are of suflicient size and shape to fit the tabs loosely to prevent tearing at the slots.
A further object of this invention is to provide such a record assembly in which a pair of hook-shaped tabs on each card connect the card to an adjacent card, and in which a transverse locking tab extends transversely of the card to lock the card against sliding lengthwise of the adjacent card.
The above and other objects and features of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention pertains, from the following detailed description, and the drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a record card constructed in accordance with an embodiment of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing an assembly of cards;
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of another assembly of cards;
Fig. 4 is a view in section, taken on the line IV--IV in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of an envelope containing a record assembly; and
Fig. 6 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section.
In the following detailed description, and the drawing, like reference characters indicate like parts.
In Fig. 1 is shown a record card which may be formed of paper or paperboard, or which may be formed of appropriate transparent or translucent sheet material. The card is in the form of an elongated strip 10 having an area 12 along one margin thereof for receiving record entries or the like. The other margin 13 of the card is provided with means by which it may be releasably secured or attached to other similar cards, as illustrated in Figs. 2-4 inclusive. The margins of the cards engage each other to hold the cards in fiatwise relation to prevent swinging of one card with respect to the adjacent card. As shown in Fig. 1, a pair of hook-shaped tabs 14 and 16 are formed integrally with the card at the other or attachment margin 13. The hook-shaped tab 14 includes a neck portion 17 and a tongue 18 which extends laterally from the neck portion and parallel to the attachment margin. The tongue 18 is spaced from the body of the card by a slot 19. As shown, the tabs 14 and 16 project in opposite directions.
Adjacent the hook-shaped tab 14 is formed a transverse locking tab 20. Tab 20 also is integral with the card. The tab 20 is provided with side edges 21 and 22 which are parallel and extend substantially perpendicularly to the attachment margin of the card. Similarly, a transverse locking tab 23 is provided adjacent the hookshaped tab 16. As shown, one edge 24 of the hookshaped tab 14 is cut more deeply into the attachment margin of the card than are the edges of the transverse locking tabs. The outer edges of the locking tabs and of the hook-shaped tabs are substantially in alignment with the edge of the card. Also the portions of the card indicated at 26, 28 and 29 are in alignment with the hook-shaped tabs and the transverse locking tabs. The sections 26, 28, and 29 engage the face of the adjacent card to prevent swinging of the cards at the attachment margins and to hold the cards flatwise against each other. Each card is provided with slots 30 and 31 which are in alignment with the neck of the hook-shaped tab 14. As shown in Fig. 2, the hookshaped tab 32 of an adjacent card 33 can be received in either of the slots 30 or 31. Similarly, slots 34 and 35 are in alignment with hook-shaped tab 16. The card is assembled with other similar cards by the insertion of the hook-shaped tabs of an adjacent card into the aforementioned slots.
Card 10 is also provided with transverse locking slots 36 and 38 which are aligned with the transverse locking tab 20. Similar transverse locking slots 41 and 42, aligned with locking tab 23, are provided. The length of each of the slots 41 and 42 is substantially equal to the distance between the side edges 21 and 22 of the transverse locking tabs. The transverse locking slots which receive the locking tabs of the adjacent card lock the cards and prevent sliding lengthwise thereof with relation to each other.
As shown in Fig. 2, the hook-shaped tabs engage the edges of the slots of the adjacent card and hold the cards in assembled relation. Each of the slots which receives one of the hook-shaped tabs is longer than the width of the neck of the tab so that there is play lengthwise of the cards at the hook-shaped tabs, and it is the transverse locking tabs which secure the cards against sliding lengthwise.
Each of the slots is of substantial width, and the corners of the slots are rounded so that the card resists tearing at the slots. Similarly, the corners of the slot 19 between tongue 18 and the body of the card are rounded.
The slots may be spaced any selected distance from the attachment margin to permit a selected portion of the record entry area to be exposed, and the tabs of each card may be disposed in selected slots of the adjacent card to reveal or expose a selected area of the card. As indicated in Fig. 2, card 33 has a wider exposed area than card 52.
The cards are arranged in echelon formation, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. Whenever necessary, one card can be removed from an assembly of cards or additional cards may be inserted wherever desired. The card assemblies are shown with only a small number of cards in each assembly, but, as will be evident, a large number of cards may be joined together in a single card assembly.
The cards may be used for maintaining lists such as the lists of names and addresses which are used in preparing directories or the like. An assembly of cards may be stored in an envelope 55 (Fig. 5) of transparent material. When the time for preparing a directory arrives, the envelope with its assembled cards may be placed on a flat' surface 56 (see Fig. 6) and held down by a glass plate 57 beneath a camera 58 so that the data on the exposed portions of the cards may be reproduced photographically. The assembled cards-lie flatwise against each other without any auxiliary or common members between the cards, and the edges of the cards are barely visible, and if lighted properly, are not reproduced photographically.
The record entry area of each card may be provided with guide lines 61 defining spaces for selected information. The guide lines 61 and direction indicia 62 may be printed in a fugitive blue color, i.e., the color thereof may be a light blue which does not reproduce photographically.
The record cards and the assemblies of cards illustrated in the drawings and described above, are subject to structural modification without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A record assembly which comprises a plurality of cards, each of said cards comprising an elongated strip of sheet material, said strip having an elongated attachment margin, the opposite margin having a Writing area, hookshaped tabs along the attachment margin at opposite ends of the strip, each hook-shaped tab having a neck portion integral with the strip and extending transversely of the strip and spaced between the ends of the strip and a tongue extending longitudinally of the strip, there being a plurality of slots in the strip aligned with the neck of each tab, each of said slots being longer than the width of the neck, the hook-shaped tabs being adapted to be loosely received in selected slots of another similar card '4 to join the cards together with a selected portion of the writing area of the card exposed, and a transverse locking tab on the attachment margin spaced closely adjacent to each hook-shaped tab and having parallel sides extending transversely to the longitudinal margins, there being a locking slot in the strip aligned with the transverse locking tab, the length of the last-mentioned slot being substantially equal to the distance between the sides of the locking tabs, the locking tabs being receivable in the locking slot of the other similar card with the sides of the locking tabs substantially engaging the ends of the locking slots of the other card to lock the cards against movement lengthwise relative to each other, the opposite margins of the strip being free, the locking tabs and hook-shaped tabs having their free ends flush with the edge of the attachment margin.
2. A record assembly in accordance with claim 1 in which the tongues of the hook-shaped tabs of each card extend in opposite directions and away from each other.
