`EARL R. JOHNSON, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
OFFICE.
Parton PENCIL Naumann,v
Application led July 3, 1926. Serial No. 120,307.
My invention in 'general relates to a clip, r
and more particularly to a name clip, especially adapted Jfor use in connection with pens and pencils.
I am aware thatJ clips for pens and pencils are available at the present time which arev adapted to have inserted therein a printed slip such as a small calendar insert. Such clips, however, are not very satisfactory due to the construction of their frame. Then too, it is diliicult to replace the paper inserts in the frame of such a clip.
Also, the calendar clips as they'are usually called, cannot be employed asa frame for a name plate', or the like, since they are not constructed for that purpose and are usually l comparatively small in slze.
I propose to provide a novel frame construction adapted to receive an insert such as a name plate, or the like, and once the insert is placedthercin to retain prevent it from falling out though'the frame is turned upside down.
The novel frame construction of my inventionis illustrated in the form of a clip particularly adapted for use in connection with pensand pencils. Several forms of this clip are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but it is of course to be understood that the invention is not to be limited thereby, but
so far as defined by the scope and spirit of the appended claims.
Furthermore, the entire clip construction of my invention is made of a single or unitary mechanical construction comprising essentially only aA punching 5 from a blank of metalliematerial which can be very economically manufactured, especially in large quantities.
Other objects and advantagesof my invention will more fully appear. from the fol-v lowing-detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate several embodiments thereof, and
, pencil;
in which Figure 1 is a front View of a clip embodying the features of my invention applied to a Figure 2 is a rear view ofthe clip shown in Figure 1, the pencil being shown in dotted lines;
Figure 3 is a sectional view'taken on sub'-- 3--3 of Fig. 1, illustrating the construction of the clip;

Figure 12 is a view partly in section taken on the line 12-12 of Figure 8, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, in which likereference numerals designate similar parts throughout the several views, 10 denotes generally a main frame portion adapted to co-operatewith an article, such as a. pencil 11. This main frame portion 1() is provided' with a pair of side flaps or flanges 12 and 13which are bentvovcr the main portion 10,to aid in defining a peripheral groove, indicated generally by the 14. Associated with one end of the main portion 10 is an end flange or flap 15 which extends over the portion "10. This flap 15 is spaced from the ends of the two side flaps 12 and 13 forming a space or slot 16 through whichv an insert may bc as will be dcscribed more in detail hereinafter.
The other end ofthe portion 10 is pro' vided with a pair of opposite side flanges 17 and -18 which are, spaced from the side anges'12 and 13. Also, the end of the portion 10 adjacent the flanges 17 and 18 is provided with an end flange-orlap 19 which extends over the portion 10.v This flap 19 is separated from the ends of the two side flaps 17 and 18 by means of a small space or slot 20. This slot 20 is adapted to serve a similar purpose to that of the slot 16.
The portion 10 is provided with a pair of laterally extending ears or bands 22 and 23A positioned between the fiaps4 or flanges 17 and 18 and the ia'nges 12 land 13. These bands 22 and 23 areformed integral with tne main portion 10 and2 are adapted to resilient- I ly grip the'body of the pencil 11 for the purpose of securing the frame thereto. Each of these bands 22 and 23 is preferably arcuate in shape so as to enable it to lit around the periphery of the pencil. Of course, it; is to be understood that although the pencillis illustratedl as being hexagonal in cross section (F igure et) .it may be made of a circular or any other-suitable shape without deviat- -in'gl from the features of my invention.
The portion 10 is also provided with a depressed portion which is formed by slitting the portion l0` andL depressing the portion intermediate the slits. yThis .depressed portion 25 is adapted to co-operate with the pencil to grip an article sucli as a pocket flap, or .the like. In other words, this portion 25 in reality constitutes a clipfor the pencil. Thus it will be seen that the novel device which I have. devised is a combination name plate and clip.
The frame is adapted to have'introduced therein a transparent sheet 26 which may be made ofv any suitable material, such for example` as Celluloid. This sheet serves as a protective covering for a name plate or card 27. Thus the plates 26 and 27 may be inserted into the peripheral groove 14 from f' either end of the frame through the means ol the previously described slots 16 and 20. These slots 16 and 20 permit the cards to be inserted with facility in the frame. Also the fiat flanges 15 and 19 serve to pre-vent the endwise displacement ot' the cards in the frame, even when the pencil is inverted.
The card 27, as shown in Figure 1, may be provided with any suitable data such, for example, as the name of the owner of the pencil. Also, this card may be used for advertising purposes if it is so desired.
In Figures 5, 6 and 7 I have illustrateda modified form of my invention. This forni of the invention presents a much better ap-. pearance due to the construction of the frame.' The face 30 of this frame is rectangular in shape and is provided with a rectangular opening 31. Formed integral with/ the face 30 are a plurality of side flaps 33, 34, and 36. The pair of flaps 33 and 34 are l separated by a space from the flaps 35 and 36 in much the same manner'as are the flaps in the form illustrated in Figure 1. The tace 30 is also provided with end flaps or flanges 38 and 39 which are spaced from thcl 10 in the construction shown in Figure 1.
associated side flaps by means of openings or slots 41 and 42, respectively. Thus it will be seen that this form of my invention is substantially of an open construction and does not have a flat face, such as the face Also the flanges or flaps in the construction shown in Figure 5 are positioned on the pencil side of the frame, or in other words on the -side opposite to that of the flanges shown in Figure l. This results 1n the in the same manner as those inserted in the y frame of the modification shown in Figure 1. The frame is also provided with a *pairA of varcuate shaped. laterally extending band members 22 and 23 which serve to clamp the frame tof the pencil 11.
In Figures 8,9, 10,-11 and 12 Ihave illus-- trated a modification of my invention asiociated with a fountain pen cap 40. The cap 40 includes the usual type of clip 41". The frame or name plate shown in this form ot' the invention is substantially like that illustrated in Figure 5, with the exception that it is made somewhat larger in order to enable it to fit the pen properly. Also, by making the frame somewhat larger the cards inserted therein are adapted to have morey information printed thereon. In Figure 8 I have illustrated the card 27" as having the name and address of the owner of the pen thereon. ,This insert may be protected transparent plate by the usual Celluloid or 26 (Figure 11).
The frame includes va rectangular face portion 30 having a rectangular aperture 3l (Figure l1). Formed integral with the face 30 are a plurality of side flanges or flaps 33', 34', 9" and 36'. These Hanges .are positioned on the pencil side of the frame or name plate so as to cause the name flange to present a s qldistantially flat appearance to the eye; The ends of the frame are provided with the usual ends of ianges 38 and i 39 separated from the associated side`flanges by means of sloti or spaces 41 and 42 re-Av spectively. These slots 41. and 42 permit of the ready insertion of the cards inthe frame. Furthermore, the frame has formed. integral therewith a pair of arcuate shaped bands extending laterally therefrom and adapted to clamp the plate to the pen holder cap 40. I have designated these bands by the reference characters 22 and 23". As shown in Figure 10, the clip 41 extends downwardly over the ends of `the two` laty erally extending bands. v
From the foregoing it will be readily obvious that my device is not limited to pen.
cils, but may be also usedto advantage in 4connection with fountain pens.l Moreover.-
although I have illustrated several forms of my invention` the invention is not to hev limited thereby, but only in so far as defined by the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. Asan article of manufacture, a frame, includin'gaperipheral slot ada ted to receive an insert, said slot beingde turned back over the frame, the Hap at one ed byV flaps the insert from being vWith one end of sai end of said frame being spaced .from the associated side flaps so as to permit of the ready insertion of av card in the said frame, said end flap 'being adapted to prevent the insert from falling fromV the frame when same is turned upside down, and lateral extensions formed integral with the side of thc frame and adapted to secure said frame to an article such as a pencil.
