Be it known that I, DANIEL B. HISER, of Wooster, in the county of lVayne and State of Ohio, have invented a'neivan d Improved Burial-Casket, ofwhich the following'is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved metallic burial-casket which has all the bolts in the bottom and top rim, so that none will show in the sides or ends.

Theinvention consists in a metallic burialcasket constructed with side pieces and end pieces united by screws passed through the top and bottom rims or flanges, so that none of the screws or bolts will appear on the sides or ends of the casket.

The invention also consists in the construction of various other parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a longitudinal elevation of my improved burial-casket, parts being broken out and others shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan viewv of the same, parts being broken out. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional elevation of the same on the line .fc m, Fig. l..

The sides A of the casket are each provided with an outwardly and inwardly projecting flange, A', at the top, and an inwardly-projecting flange, A2, at the bottom; The end pieces, B, are also provided with top and bottom flanges, B and B2, respectively, and the ends of the end pieces are rounded, so that they will fit against the ends of the side pieces, and the ends of the flanges of the end pieces will t against the ends of the flanges of the side pieces. The end edges of the side pieces, A, and the end pieces, B, are rabbeted, and the bot-tom iianges, A2, of the side pieces, A, are provided on the upper surface with lugs O, adapted to overlap the ends of the bottom flanged B2, of the end piece, B, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and then bolts c are passed through the said lugs C and the ends of the flanges B2, which bolts` chavetheirheads coun tersunk in the bottom surfaces of the flanges B2, and have nuts resting on the lugs C. rlhe top flanges A of the side pieces are provided on the inwardly-projecting part and each endV with a lug, U, which passes under the correspending' end of the top flange B', a bolt, o', being passed through the end of the flange B and thelug C,Which bolt chas its head countersunk inthe upper surface of the flange B'. The ends are then united With the side pieces, and the heads of the bolts show on the top and bottom surfaces of the casket, the nuts being in the interior of the saine. The bottoni plate, D, of the casket is placed against the under surfaces of the bottom lianges, A2 B2, of the side pieces, A, and end pieces, B, respectively, and is secured to the same by bolts b, having their heads countersunk in the under surface of the bottom plate, the nuts resting on the upper surface of the bottom flanges A2 of the side pieces. By uniting the sides, ends, and bottom of the casket in this manner, no bolts will show on the sides or ends, and the countersunk heads only of the bolts will show on the undersurface of the bottom plate, D, and the nuts on the top surfaces of the lianges A B. That part of the flanges A B projecting outward is provided with a groove, a, for receiving the packing or cement, thus forming close joints. lVooden stripsE are held in the upper surfaces of the bottom flanges A2 by studs F, projecting upward from the lugs C. Wooden strips G are held on the under sides of the inwardly-projecting parts of the flanges A by screws d, countersunk in the upper sur faces of the flanges A and screwed into the Wooden strips G. The lining of the casket is tacked' to the said wooden strips. Wooden strips Gr4 are secured to the under sides of the anges B of the end pieces. Vooden Wedges L are forced in between the edges of the bolts K and the under surfaces of the panes of glass, l, and thus hold the panes in place.

' Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I. Arnetallic burial-casket constructed with flanged side and end pieces, the flanges of the side pieces being provided at the ends with lugs projecting beyond the ends of the flanges, and lapping the flanges of the end pieces, said end-piece flanges projecting under the said lugs, through which lugs and the ends of' the flanges of the end pieces screws are passed,-for

uniting, the, end piecesV with the side pieces, substantially as herein shownA and described, and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a metallic burial-casket, a cover prof vided with downwardly-projecting ridges J' on the under side, which ridges have lugs J', a glass plate, I, held between the ridges, the bolts K, passed through the lugs J, and the wedges L, driven in between the glass and the heads of the bolts, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
