l TOY VEHICLE. s No. 288,663.` Y Patented Nov. 20, y1883.
N Tins. Phuxomlwgmmr, washington. b c4 UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM S. REED, OF LEOMINSTEE, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOY VEHICLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of` Letters Patent No. 288,663, dated Ncvemher 20, 1883.
Afplication tiled April 21, IESS.
T0 a/ZZ whom, may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. REED, of Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Toy Vehicles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which-L Figure l is a perspective view of a toy wagon having on its exterior and interior representations of letters of the alphabet, numerical and other gures and characters, and provided with an extensible handle, all constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a section through said handle. Fig. 3 represents the under side of a cover of a box converted into a blackboard or slate.
This invention has special reference to certain improvements in toys for whichLetters PatentNo. 203,776 of the United States were granted me May 14, 1878, a toy exhibitionwagon being there represented with removable cards or tablets having thereon pictures or figures of animals or other objects and alphabet and spelling-lessons.
My present invention consists in the representation directly upon the portions of a `knockdown vehicle toy of the letters of the alphabet, spelling-lessons, numerical or other figures or characters, the same serving as a ready means of imparting instruction, the attention of the child being naturally inclined to the task of acquiring the lessons thereon by the attractive form in which they are presented.
My invention also consists in a blackboard or slate formed on one side of the box cover or bottom of a toy, and also consists in an extensible handle for a toy vehicle, to be described herein. A
In the said drawings is represented a toy wagon composed of the following portions, to wit: a rectangular box, A, a pair of axles, a a, two pairs of wheels, b b, hubs c c, dashboard d, seat e, with posts f, for supporting the same, back or rest for the back of the occupant, a handle or draft-pole, B, formed in two portions, It t', united by a socket-joint, 7c, the inner end of the portion t' being secured by a pin, l, within a mortised tongue-piece,
(No model.)
m, passing through and projecting in front of the forward axle, and the outer end of the portion 7c being provided with a cross-bar, n, for applying the hand thereto. The several portions are readily detached and placed within the box A, which is closed with ay cover, C, `in which compact form the toy may be conveniently transported. One side of said cover is painted black, to serve the purpose of :a blackboard for writing or drawing thereon, Fig. 3.
The novel feature of this invention is the l representation of various educational characters directly on the surface of the toy object, or upon strips, Src., permanently attached thereto. The outer surfacesof the sides and ends of the wagon have painted, stamped, embossed, or pasted thereon the capital letters ofthe alphabet, with a pictorial illustration at the center of the exterior of the sides. The interior of both sides is decorated by pictures in panels. resented thereon some of the small letters of the alphabet, while the interior of the opposite end is intended to have numerals thereon. The outer and inner faces of the wheels bear representations of numeral figures, large and small letters of the alphabet, clock-dial, and also compass. (Not shown.) The topof the seat and front of the dash-board are also decorated with pictures of interesting objects, while the bottom of the seat and rear of the dash-board may be provided with a prepa-ration to adapt them for use as slates or blackboards. Any other vehicle toy than a wagonfor instance, a steamboat, train of cars, locomotive, &e.*may be similarly provided with letters, figures, and characters without departing from the spirit of my invention.
From the foregoing it willbe seen that I combine in a knockdown or other toy means for educating the child in mechanical construction, and at the same time stimulate the mind to the study of rudimentary spelling, drawing, and other lessons.
` I claimyl. In combination with the portions of a knockdown toy vehicle, the representations of the letters of the alphabet, numerical and other gures and characters, permanently exhibited thereon, as and for the purpose set forth.
The interior of one end has rep- IVOO 2. A box Cover or bottom having one of its binaton with the axle of a toy vehicle, aS

substantially as described.
