Description

May 5, 1959 o. EIJEFFERSON' 2,884,644
' PLASTIC SPONGE HOT HOLDER Filed Sept. 2. 195a .F'IE/ 2 INVENTOR. ORVILLE EJEFFERSON United States Patent PLASTIC SPONGE HOT HOLDER Orville E. Jelferson, Minneapolis, Minn.
Application September 2, 1958, Serial No. 758,248
3 Claims. (Cl. 2-158) This invention relates to material handling equipment and more particularly to a device for handling hot implements.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a protective device for the hand for facilitating the carrying and manipulating of various hot implements, pots, and pans. Another object of the present invention is to provide a protective device of the above type that can be equally as well used for cleaning and polishing purposes without damaging the surface of such articles or irritating the skin of the hand.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a plastic sponge hot holder bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of a device made in accordance with the present invention; and
Figure 2 is a transverse cross sectional view taken along line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a handling device made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a hand receiving mitt 12 having a hand receiving opening 14 at one end and a pair of finger pockets 20 and a thumb pocket 22 at the opposite end. A plastic liner 24 that is water impervious lines the interior of the mitt 12 and is similarly provided with a hand receiving opening in the form of a sleeve at one end, and a pair of finger receiving sleeves 27 and thumb receiving sleeve 29 at the opposite end. Parti- "ice tion walls 26 within each of the finger receiving sleeves 27 of the liner divide the interior thereof into separate finger receiving compartments 28 so as to accommodate all of the fingers of a hand.
In actual use, either the left or right hand is inserted into the double faced mitt 12 with each finger being received within one of the compartments 28 and the thumb being received within the compartment 31 of the thumb sleeve 29. The sponge-like texture of the mitt 12 serves as an eflicient insulation which prevents the transmission of the heat to the hand within the liner, such liner further preventing irritation of the hands when the mitt is used in hot water, cleaning solutions, or the like. It will thus be recognized that this device is equally as well adapted for use with hot implements, as well as for washing, polishing and cleaning purposes all Without irritating or burning the hands. Furthermore, the outer surface of the mitt is of rough texture which facilitates the cleaning of various articles and prevents any articles grasped with the mitt from slip-ping.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An insulated holder comprising, in combination, a mitt defining a hand receiving opening at one end, a thumb pocket and a pair of finger pockets at the opposite end of said mitt, a liner within said mitt insulating the hand from contact with said hand receiving mitt, said liner including a thumb receiving sleeve and two finger receiving sleeves, said thumb receiving sleeve being received within said thumb pocket, said finger receiving sleeves being disposed within said finger pockets, and each one of said finger receiving sleeves including a central longitudinal partition wall dividing the interior thereof into a pair of individual finger receiving portions.
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said hand receiving mitt is of substantially sponge-like porous construction defining an abrasive exterior surface.
3. The combination according to claim 2, wherein said liner is of substantially flexible liquid impervious sheet material defining a smooth interior surface.
