Application filed September 1, 1915. Serial No. 18,415.
act description.
My invention relates to mittens or other similar hand-coverings having a roughened surface adapted to form a massage device when brought in contact with the skin, and one which also may be used as a holder for soap, or other detergent so that the same will produce a copious lather and thereby serve a purpose similar to that of a sponge or wash-cloth, having, in addition, a continuous supply of the detergent material, such as soap.
Briefly stated, my invention comprises providing a bath mitten or similar handcovering made of waterproof elastic material with a series of perforations or holes so that a cake of soap or similar material may be held in the hand within said mitten while the skin is being rubbed with the latter.
For a detailed description of one form of my invention, reference may be had to the following specification and to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the mitten; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof, showing a longitudlnal portion cut away to disclose the arrangement of the interior as concerns the hand of the wearer.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a sheet of rubber compound forming one side of the mitten, and the numeral 2 indicates the corresponding opposed side thereof. These sheets are preferably shaped in the manner indicated in the drawing to provide a separate portion 3 to receive the thumb of the wearer, although I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to this particular shape, as any suitable shape which forms an eflicient covering for the purposes for which the article is designed, may be adopted. The sheets of rubber comprising the two sides of the hand-covering are provided with a series of perforations or holes 4 and 5, which are separated a sumeient distance not to weaken the rubber sheets when in use and yet are of suficient size and number to allow the water to pass freely to the interior of the mitten. The surfaces of the two sides of the mitten are preferably roughened to form an uneven surface similar to that of a wash-cloth or other similar articles, such as massage devices. I also contemplate this surface being made in the form of a spongy material of greater or less porosity.
In using the hand-covering or mitten herein described, the mitten is placed upon the hand of the wearerand a cake of soap inserted through the wrist-opening until it lies in the palm of the hand, as indicated in Fig. 2, or in any other preferred position for efficient use. The hand covered with the glove having been dipped in water, the mitten may be rubbed over the surface of the body which thereby roduces a copious lather, and by reason of the roughened surface of the cloth thoroughly cleanses the skin, the soap solution being continuously supplied through the openings so that the lather is maintained as long as the rubbing operation is continued. The holes or perforations are preferably provided in both sides of the mitten, in order that the same may be used on either the right or left hand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A hand-covering for bathing or similar puposes comprising a portion formed of a sheet of thin, non-absorbent waterproof material for covering the palm of the hand having a roughened surface provided with a plurality of perforations, and a portion united with the sheet at opposite edges thereof and adapted to extend over the back of the hand for holding said sheet in position upon the hand, said covering being made elastic so as to adjustably hold a detergent or cleansing substance between it and the hand.
2. A hand-covering for bathing or similar purposes comprising sheets of thin rubber havlng roughened surfaces and provided each with a plurality of perforations, said sheets being secured together along margins thereof to adapt the covering to be used similarly on either hand and to inclose a detergent or cleansing substance.
Signed at Naugatuck, Connecticut, this 24th day of August 1915.
