This invention relates to a sponge mitt, and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind particularly adapted for use in the washing of highly pol- '5j ished surfaces, such as used in connection with automobiles, walls, woodwork, windows and the like.

Another object of the invention is to providea device of this kind comprising two A separable members, one constituting a mitt and the other a sponge body insertible within the mitt, said mitt having means whereby the applied sponge is ,eifectually held therein.

A further object of the invention is to pro- 1l! vide a sponge mitt wherein the palm portion of the mitt proper is provided with perforations to allow the moisture to enter therein together with a sponge member insertible within the mitt whereby is effectively absorbed the moisture entering the mitt through such perforations.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrange* ment of the several parts of my improved y sponge mitt whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a view in perspective from the` front of a sponge mitt constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;

Figure 2 is a view in rear elevation of the mitt as herein disclosed, the sponge element being indicated by broken lines;

Figure 3 is a sectional View taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;

As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, M denotes the mitt proper with the palm or face lamination 1 of sheepskin with the wool thereon, said skin of course being previously tanned and treated to render the same highly pliable. In practice the wool surface is outwardly disposed and said lamination 1 of sheepskin has disposed therethorugh at desired spaced intervals a plurality of minute perforations 2, to allow the passage of moisture therethrough. To the rear face of the skin of the mitt is secured a backing sheet 3 of canvas or other desired material, said canvas at the inner or wrist portion of the mitt being free from the skin so that the hand of the user may be readily inserted between the skin and the backing. At the inner or wrist portion the skin has secured thereto what might be termed a pocket 4, the open face of the pocket being disposed toward the outer or forward portion of the mitt. Furthermore, this pocket extends a material distance inwardly of the inner or open end of the backing 3.

The sponge element S, as herein disclosed, is made of sheet sponge rubber of a character and quality which operates to rapidly absorb moisture. This sponge element S is of a general configuration to conform to the hand of the user in outline and its outer or forward portion is provided with an annular series of openings 5, the end openings bein substantially in transverse alignment. T ese openings 5 provide depressions in which the extremities of the digits ofthe hand inserted within the mitt are received to increase the gripping action of the mitt by the user. By having the end openings 5 in transverse alignment it will be self-evident that a single mitt can be used with equal facilit in connection with the right hand or the eft'hand as each of the end openings 5 is adapted to accommodate the thumb of a hand. This is of importance as it avoids the necessity of making both right and left hand mitts as the particular arrangement of these openings 5, as just stated, enables a single mitt to be effectively used upon either hand.

In view of the foregoing it is believed to be apparent that with the use of a mitt such as hereinbefore disclosed a highly finished surface may be washed without scratching. It is to be further noted that making the mitt M with a face of sheepskin, such face at all times will remain fiat and the large surl tion of the mitt becoming ragged, tearing and otherwise becoming ineffective.

s ongemitt will clean a surface to the same if) not better advantage than the natural sea sponge owing to the fact that a sheepskin wool surface has greater bearing power in washing than the natural sea sponge and will get right down vto the finished surface removing all grease and road film in the washing of an automobile.

It is also to be particularly notedthat the mitt proper and the sponge element are entirel separable when desired. This is of particular advantage as it allows both of such parts to be effectively cleansed or with the further advantage of allowing either of such parts to be replaced if necessary.

From v the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious' that a sponge mitt constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the princi les and spirit thereof and for this reason do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim 1. As a new article of manufacture, a washing mitt having a face lamination of sheepskin with the wool outwardly disposed, said lamination having a plurality of openings therethrough, a backing lamination secured to the sheepskin lamination, said backing lamination being open at the inner or wrist portion of the mitt to allow the insertion of a hand therein, and a sponge element within and secured against displacement from the mitt, said element being provided with openings to receive the extremities of the digits of a hand inserted within the mitt. As a new article of manufacture, a washing mitt having a face lamination of sheepskin with the wool outwardly disposed, said lamination having a plurality of openings therethrough, a backing lamination secured to the sheepskin lamination, said backing lamination being open at the inner or wrist portion of the mitt to allow the insertion of a hand therein, and a sponge element within and secured against displacement from the mitt, said element being provided with opento receive the extremities of the digits of a and inserted within the mitt, certain of said openings being in transverse alignment to allow the mitt and applied sponge element to be used upon either hand.

As a new article of manufacture, a washing mitt having a face lamination of sheepskin with the wool outwardly disposed, said laminationhaving a plurality of openings therethrough, a backing lamination secured to the sheepskin lamination, said backing lamination being open at the inner or wrist portion of the mitt toallow the insertion of a hand therein, a sponge element within the mitt, and a pocket secured to the inner orwrist portion of the sheepskin lamination, the-forward end of the pocket being open and the inner portion of the backing lamination lapping the forward open end portion of the pocket, said pocket providing means to retain the applied sponge element.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a washing mitt having a face lamination, a backing lamination,.sa1d backing lamination being open at the inner or wrist portion of the mitt to allow the insertion of a hand therein, and a sponge element within and secured against displacement from the mitt, said element being providedwith openings to receive the extremities of the digits of a hand inserted 9i! within the mitt.
