A. P. SHBARMAN KNOGKDOWN TABLE.
No. 288,126. Patented Nov. 6, 1883 n I m w m s P M .w M fl UNITED Sm n g A PATENT KNOCKDOWN TABLE.
srnclrrcn'rioir forming ,part of Letters Patent we. 288,126, dated November 6, 1883.
- Application filed June :22, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may'conccrn:
Be it known that I, Anmson P. SHEARMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in knockdown tables.
It has for its object to firmly unite the ends of-theside rails, and to render their connection with the legs rigid and firm without the intervention of screws; and with these ends in view my invention consists in uniting the ,cndsof the side. rails by dovetail joints, and
connecting said .railsat the corners with the legs by vertical dovetail joints, in the manner hereinafter described, so as to not only rigidly secure the leg in place. but so that when the parts are separated there will not be any great liability of destroyingthe symmetry and proportions of the joints.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention relates may know how to make and use my improved table, I will procoed to describe its construction and the n1annor of assembling the parts, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figural is a perspective view of a corner portion of a table embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the addition of a finishing-block; Fig. 3, a per spective view of the upper portion of the leg; Fig. 4, a similar view of the finishing-block.
Similar letters indicate like parts in the several figures.
A A are the side rail? which, when secured in position, form the fr me of the table. Theadjacent ends of these ils are connected together at right angles by horizontal dovetail joints B, and each of the rails, near their meeting ends, is provided with vertical dovetail grooves C in such manner that. it will receive and confine the dovetails D on the sides of the upper ends of the posts E; The dovetails formed on the posts are such, as will be seen on reference to the drawings, that the body or stock of the postprojecting laterally from the angle of the dovetail will lie against the inside surface of the rails, and serve as a brace to the same. The dovetails of the legs, formed on two of their sides, as described, terminate in corner shoulders, as shown in Fig. 3, which form seats or supports for the side rails, and, as shown in said figure, three supporting-shoulders are formed at the three angles of the leg, whereby the rails are sup ported and braced both vertically and later ally, and the parts separated either by driving the leg downward or the connected rails no ward, and thus enable the table to be shipped flat.
, As a finish to the corners, Ipropose applying an exterior block, F, which is cut out to fit the corner produced by thcjuncture of the rails and conceal the joint. This block may be attached'or secured in place in an y dcsirable manner.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1: In aknockdown table, the side rails, A,
secured together at their ends, and provided with dovetail grooves on their inner sides, in combination with the legs E, having vertical dovetails 1), formed on two sides thereof, adapt ed to interlock with the rail grooves and leave stock outside of said dovetails, as shown, whereby to support and brace the side rails, substantially as shown and described.
. 2. In a knockdown table, the legs E, having dovetails formed on two of their sides, ten min'ating incorner-shoulders, in combination with the rails A, having dovetailed grooves on their inner sides and secured together by dovetail tenons at their ends, whereby to support and brace the side rails vertically, and
