To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, Jol-1N J. SHERMAN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chairs, of which the fol.- lowing is a specification.

My invention pertains particularly to chairs which may be readily. knocked down for shipping purposes, although features of tllile invention are applicable to chairs genera y.

My primary object is to provide a chair of the character indicated of exceedingly simple, durable and cheap construction.

The invention is particularly useful in connection with chairs for children, and such a chair is illustrated in the accompanyinO* drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a chair, with certain parts in section, constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. la, a broken perspective view showing the upper portion of a leg constituting a part of one of the side members of the chair; Fig. 2, a 'broken rear elevational view, with a part in section, of said chair; Fig. 3, a broken longitudinal section of the chair; and Fig. 4, an inner view of a side member of a chair of modified construction, said side being shown partly in section.

In the construction shown in Figs. l to 3 inclusive, the chair comprises sides A, A1; a seat A2 detachably connected with said sides; and a back A3 detachably connected with the sides. Each of the sides A, A1 comprises a board a of suitable configuration; legs a1, a? having kerfs cut therein and receiving the upright edges of the board a; and an arm a3 having kerfs cut therein and receiving the upper edge-portion, or edge- Said arm is additionally recessed, or mortised, at the ends of the kerfs to receive tenons a4 at the upper ends of the legs. The parts of each side are securely joined together by the means indicated, glue being employed to render the construction more secure. The seat A2 comprises a board a5 equipped at its lateral edges with down-turned flanges a which are connected with the boards a by bolts a7. The back A3 comprises side frame members aSi joined at their upper ends by a frame member a9 and at a distance above their lower ends by a frame member a1, and a i panel a connecting the cross frame memhers. The back fits easily between the sides of the chair, and the lower ends of the members as are equipped at their outer lateral surfaces with sots a which enga e inwardly projecting studs als carried by locks a applied to the inner surfaces of the boards a adjacent to the legs a2. The members as are also equipped with lateral studs a having heads or balls am. The rearwardly projecting portions all of the arms of the chair are equipped on their upper surfaces with recesses als adapted to receive the balls ai, whereby the chair-back is rendered adjustable in inclination. The recesses a are provided by boring shallow holes in the upper surfaces of the portions a of the chair arms.

It will at once be understood that the chair may be knocked down by lifting the back bodily from the chair and removin the bolts a7, thereby detaclling the sides o the chair from the chair-seat.

In the construction shown in Fig. 4, B is a side of a chair, stool, or small settee, comprising a board Z) and arms b1 surmounting the same; a front binding member, or leg member b2; a` rear binding member, or leg member b3; and a lower binding member b4, which is curved as indicated and whose eX- tremities form portions of the legs of the article. The arms b1 have kerfs which receive the upper edge-portions of the board b; and the members b2, 3 and b4 have kerfs which receive the corresponding edge-portions of the board Z). In this arrangement, the board is so cut as to have tapering portions ZJ which terminate at a distance above the lower ends of the legs. An additional member, or lillet, Z1 is employed at the lower end of each leg to complete the binding between the lower extremities of the members b2, b3 and the extremities of the member [14. The board b is provided with the perfor-ations 67 which serve to receive bolts for connection with a chair-seat; and joining' the members b3 and b4 is a member D8 which bears an inwardly projecting stud o, corresponding with the stud a, shown in Fig. 2, and serving as a connection for the chair-back.

It is obvious that the legs of the chair may be of any desirable form and that various curvatures may be iven to the several arts constituting the si es of the chair, wit out departure from my invention. It is like- Wise obvious that the legs may or may not be equipped with rockers.

What l regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. ln a knock-down chair, the combination with two sides each comprising legs, an arm, kei-fs in said legs and arm and a panel with its edge-portions rigidly secured in said kei-fs, of a seat provided with lateral flanges and a front flange extending between said lateral flanges,and bolts extending throu h said lateral flanges and panels and detac ably secnrin said parts together, for the purpose set orth.

2. In a knock-down chair7 the combination with two Sides each comprising legs all and a2, an arln a3 with a rearwardly projecting portion provided with recesses a, kerfs in said legs and arm, and a panel a with its ed e-portions rigidly secured in said kerfs, an a pin al@ projectin from the inner face of each of said sides a jacent to the legs (1,2, of a seat provided with lateral flanges a and a front flange extending between said lateral flanges, bolts a7 extending through said lateral. flanges and panels and detachably securing said parts together, and a back interposed between said sides and provided with lateral slots an12 engaging said studs a, and laterally projecting balls al adapted to enter said recesses am, for the purpose set forth.
