SHAVER WITH ROLLING COMBS Filed April 26, 1956 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 'IIIIJ I4.- I
INVENTOR LOUIS OCARISSIMI States Patent 2,880,503 SHAVER WITH ROLLING COMBS fouls C. Carissimi, Fairlield, Conn., assignor to Sperry Rand Corporation, New York, N.Y., a corporation of Delaware Application April 26, 1956, Serial No. 580,934
Claims. (Cl. 30-34) This invention relates to dry shavers of the type wherein there are cutter heads including cutter elements at least one of which is moved at high speed relative to the other. One form of shaver to which the invention is applicable is shown in US. Patent No. 2,561,241 issued July 17, 1951 to Jan Streng.
A main object of the invention is to provide a shaver the head of which can be passed over the face with much greater ease and smoothness and with substantially no irritation to the skin.
A further object is to achieve the above object while at the same time not reducing shaving efficiency by hampering the reception of hair into the usual shearing slots in the head.
Yet'another object is to provide a shaver structure wherein the amount of hair reception areas exposed may be varied by variations of the pressure with which the shaver is applied to the face thus enabling heavy or light beards to be removed with equal facility.
In brief and general terms, the invention includes the feature of relating rolling comb elements with respect to the cutter elements, whether the cutter elements are elongate or curvilinear, in such manner that the comb elements, or some of them, are always moved in advance of the cutter elements to contact the skin first and permit the shaver to be moved smoothly and easily over the face of the user.
A further feature relates to the provision of rolling comb elements on each side of elongate cutter elements and so mounting them that they can be readily removed for adjustment and repair.
A further feature relates to the provision of means whereby the rolling comb elements may be mounted for relative movement to said elements or to yield to varying pressure of the shaver against the face of the user so that the action is efiicient for either light or heavy beards. To this latter end the rolling comb elements are mounted at their ends by resilient means to permit this yielding, in a detailed manner to be subsequently described.
Still a further feature relates to the provision of structure whereby the rolling comb elements may be mounted directly on the shaver head itself or may be mounted on the hair pocket casing.
A further feature relates to the provision of rolling comb elements which may be smooth elongate rollers, corrugated rollers, balls or disks and the like.
Further features of construction will be understood from the following detailed description especially when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which form part of the specification hereinafter set forth.
Present preferred forms which the invention may assume are illustrated in the drawings, of which,
Fig. l is a top plan of a shaver with the rolling comb elements thereon;
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig.3 is an enlarged vertical section taken on the line ice 3-3 of Fig. 1 and showing how one of the inner rolling elements is mounted;
Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 and showing how one of the outer rolling elements is mounted;
Fig. 5 is a partial transverse vertical section similar to Fig. 2 and through a modified form of shaver;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertical section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5, showing the mounting of the outer comb elements;
Fig. 7 is a detailed vertical section taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5 showing the mounting of an inner comb element;
Fig. 8 is a detailed vertical section taken on the line 88 of Fig. 7.
Fig. 9 is an exploded isometric view of the manner of supporting the ends of certain comb elements;
Referring now to the specific forms which the invention may assume, attention is first directed to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive in which it will be seen that there is provided a shaver having a head portion 20, a hair pocket casing 21,
and cutter elements 22 which, in this form of shaver are pairs of elongate cutter blades between which there is the usual relative reciprocal motion. The casing or cover 21 is constructed to be snapped into the position shown by reason of grooves 23 in the head 20 and lugs 24 on the casing 21. The casing 21 is provided with headed rivets 25 to permit a cover (not shown) to be snapped over the top of the casing 21.
In order'to reduce the friction occurring as the shaver head is moved across the skin of the user whereby to make the shaving operation smooth and easy, it is contemplated to provide a series of rolling comb elements or combing rollers associated with the cutting elements 22. In the form of cutting elements 22 shown which are elongate elements, the comb elements assume the form of elon gate rollers. In the forms of shaver shown in Fig. 1 there are two cutter elements and there are three roller combs. One of these comb elements or rollers 26 is disposed between the cutter elements 22 and is in the form of a smooth surfaced comb element. As shown in Fig. 3 this roller is mounted for axial rotation but is also supported so that it can be moved along its axis to permit its removal from the casing 21 when desired, for adjustment, replacement, and repair. As shown in Fig. 3, the comb element has an elongate bore 27 at one end in which is disposed a coiled spring 28 backing the rear end of a slidable plug 29 the outer end of which is reduced in diameter to form a bearing pin 30. The end of the comb element at this end is crimped in slightly as at 31 to limit the movement of the plug outwardly of the bore. The other end of the comb element 26 is reduced in diameter to form rigid bearing pin 32. These two pins rotatably rest in recesses 33 in the casing 21 as shown. Recesses 33, see Figs. 3 and 4, have side walls providing bearing surfaces for the cylindrical end surface portions of bearing pins 30 and 32. Recesses 33 also have end walls 33' forming the inner end of the recesses providing bearing surfaces for the end surfaces of bearing pins 30 and 32. By having these recesses 33 opening inwardly toward each other, ready manual insertion and removal of combing elements or rollers 26 and into the space between the wall portions of casing 21 adia-.
cent recesses 33 until it is aligned with the opposite re 3, cess133. combing roller. .26 or, 34 may then be manually moved with the action of spring 28 so rigid bearing pin 32 will engage in the adjacent recess 33 until the extremity engages the end wall in the recess.
clear that this comb element is free to easily rotate on its axis while it also may be moved along its axis to permit its removal when desired.
Inthis construction, the two outer comb elements 34 have a corrugated or wavy outer surface as shown and are mounted for free rotation and axial movement for the above purposes. However in this latter form the spring 28 is housed in a bore 27 as before and the plug 29 rides partly therein but the outer portion of the plug 29 is enlarged in the form of a disk 35 ridingin an enlarged bore 36. This form appears to give greater stability to the parts.
In the modified form of the shaver shown in Figs.
structed for axial movement for removal as-above described with respect to the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, although for convenience and to avoid repetition this specific construction is not shown'in Figs. 5-to 9 inelusive.
In Fig. 5 it is seen that the hair pocket casing 21 in this form is snapped on to the head 20 in a slightly different manner than above described. In this form, the
head on opposed sides is recessed to receive tight-fitting thimbles 37 in which are disposed balls 38 backed by springs 39. The outward movement of the balls 38 are limited by crimping in the outer edges of the thimbles as at 40. The adjacent faces of the casing 21 are provided with recesses 41 into which the balls snap when the casing is moved into position as shown.
In Fig. 6 is shown in detail the manner of mounting the outer comb elements 34. The end pins 30 and 32 thereof now project into elongate slots 42 which permit the pins. to move up and down therein. The construction which permits this form of comb element to move up or down as a whole transversely of its axis is afforded by the provision of a leaf spring member 43 the middle portion of which is fastened, such as by rivets 44, to inwardly turned flanges 45 near the top of the casing 21. The opposite ends of the leaf spring are turned up as at 46 and are apertured at 47 to receive the pins 30 and 32. Thus it will be seen that as more or less pressure is applied by the user the comb elements 34 will yield to allow for .more efficient operation on heavy and light beards, for heavy beards the pressure will be greater and for light beards the pressure may be less.
With regard to the resilient support of the inner comb element 26 shown in these figures reference may be had especially to Figs. 7, 8, and 9, in which it is seen that the ends of the pins 30 and 32 are tapered as at 48 and project into similar elongate slots 42. Referring to Fig. 8 it will be seen that there is provided an upwardly extending bore 43 which has a shoulder 50 at its upper end: The width of the bore is slightly larger than the width of the elongate slot 42 and the upper end of the" slot 42Textends slightly above the shoulder 50; A spring This opera tion is reversed in removing rollers 26 and 34 from en-- 51 in the bore 49 at its upper end bears against the shoulder 50 and at its lower end bears against a tight fitting plug 52 which keeps the spring under compression. As seen in Fig. 8 it is seen that the top of the spring 51 bearing against the shoulder 50 is slightly below the level of the top of the slot 42 so that the tapered end 45 of the comb element end pins will enter this space and,
due to the taper thereof will force the spring down slightly. This compression of the spring by the pin willbeen shown as mounted in different manners itis cleai i that they all may be smooth-surfaced or corrugated if desired and they may all be mounted in the same man-' In any case all the'comb elements thus far described; are preferably, although not necessarily, mounted to be moved axially for removal as described. While the comb elements have been shown in the specific forms as mounted on the hair-pocket casing, it is quite obviousthatthey' may be mounted on the head of the shaver if no-hair f pocket casing is empoyed.
