My invention relates to a shaving device for use in so-called dry shaving."
The invention has among its objects the provision of a shaving device of this type which is of simplified construction and adapted better to operate upon the face of the user.
The invention will be best understood fro the following description when read in the light of the accompanying drawing of one embodiw ment of the invention selected for illustrative purposes, the scope of which invention will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The shaving device illustrated in the drawin 35 comprises a cup-shaped casing l of thin sheet metal, the base which is formed with a marginal bead adjacent its periphery. As shown, this bead has a flat outer face 3 in a plane normal to the axis of the casing and has oppositely flaring side walls 5 and I, so that the bead radially thereoi in cross-section has a V-shaped contour with the apex of the V cut away. In practice the casing may be approximately the size indicated by Fig. 1.
The head above described is formed with a plurality oi closely spaced parallel slots 9, these slots, as illustrated, intersecting the outer face 3 and opposite side walls 55 and I of the bead. m ifhe slots in inner wall I as shown extend to approximately the bottom wall ll of the recess surrounded by the bead, and the slots in the outer wall 5 slightly intersect the adjacent end of the cylindrical wall of the casing. If desired, slots in the side walls Z, other than those formed therein by the ends of the slots in the face 3, may be omitted.
The slotted head above described forms a "comb", and the material of the head between 50 each pair of adjacent slots forms one element of a shearing couple. The other shearing element of the couple is positioned at the inner side of the head, and is movable relative to the casing so that the hairs which enter the slots of the bead will 55 be sheared oil. These shearing elements within the bead preferably, but not necessarily, are rotary.
As illustrated, within the casing is a member comprising the disk it formed with a plurality of flat radial blades it. As shown, the upper surfaces of the disk and blades are shaped to conform exactly to the inner side of the wall ll. of the casing and the face 3 and side walls 5 and l of the bead. By this, construction, when the disk is rotated an edge of the upper surface of eachblade cooperates with an edge of the portion of the'bead between each pair of adjacent slots to form shearing couples. It will be noted that the blades it, which extend radially of the head, will for the most part intersect the slots at an angle, and thereby facilitate the shearing operation, the action of the shearing couples so formed being closely like that of. the usual shears having pivotally connected blades as in the ordinary scissors.
As illustrated, the casing i is mounted on a base formed by the casing ll of an electric motor 'adapted'to be held by the hand of the user. As shown, the casing oi the motor has a reduced cylindrical end portion id and a shoulder 2i, the flexible cord 22 for energizing the motor entering the opposite end of the casing. The open end of the casing i is slid over this cylindrical end portion in abutting relation with the shoulder, and is detachably secured to the casing H by a set screw 23 tapped into the wall of the portion id and extending through a suitable opening in the wall of the casing l. i
For rotating the blades i5 the disk i3 is. shown as provided with an axially positioned square hole 25 which receives the correspondingly shaped reduced end portion 2! of a cylindrical shaft 29. As best illustrated, the lower end of the shaft 2g is provided with a cylindrical bore 3| which slidably receives the reduced end portion 33 of the rotary motor shaft 35. The portion 33 of the shaft 35, as illustrated, is provided with a pin 3? extending diametrically therethrough and having projecting end portions. These end portions are received in the slots 39 formed in the walls of the bore ii .at the lower end of the shaft 29, so that the shaft 29 is forced to rotate with the shaft 35 in the assembled device. As shown, the shaft 35 is provided with a collar 4| which serves as an abutment for the lower end of a light compression spring 33, the upper end of the spring abutting against the under side of the disk I3. It will be noted by this construction that inefiect a longitudinally extensible shaft is provided for rotating thedisk l3, and that this construction causes the spring 63 to hold the.
upper surfaces of the blades 5 in yielding contact with the under surfaces of the bead on the end of the casing i.
For lubricating the device the upper end of the shaft 29 is shown as provided with a small cupshaped recess 45 adapted to receive grease as, for example, petroleum jelly. Communicating with this recess are grooves fil which extend radially across the upper surfaces of the disk l3 and blades i5, so that the surfaces of the disk and blades which contact with the under surfaces of the bead and central portion H of the end of the casing I will be lubricated. v v
It has been found that the shaving device above described will remove the hairs much more rapidly than shaving devices of the dry shaving type heretofore proposed, thus enabling the device to be moved more rapidly over the face and to complete the shaving operation in less time than with prior devices. Further, with prior devices of this type it is necessa y, particularly when a close shave is desired, to draw the skin upward toward the scalp in advance of the comb so as to make the hairs project at right angles to the skin and enter the interstices of the comb. This is unnecessary with the shaving device above described for the reason that when the bead is pressed against the face the skin tends to be pushed up into the recess surrounded by the inner side i of the head, which suitably tensions the skin, particularly when the device is moved in an upward direction along the face or neck, and causes the hairs to stand out from the skin and enter the comb. Still further, the roundedbead permits the ready removal of hairs from portions of the face ordinarily diificult to shave as, for example, the upper lip adjacent the nose, the chin adjacent the lower lip, and the sides of the face about the cars. This is due to the fact that the bead being rounded may be tilted to present only a small portion of the outer face 5 of the bead to such portions to be shaved.
It will be understood that within the scope of v the appended claims wide deviations may be made from the form of the invention described without departing from the spirit ofthe invention.
I claim:
1. A shaving device having, in combination, a, skin contacting member formed to present a thin walled annular part having a face portion and an outer side wall inclined outwardly of said face portion, said face portion and wall provided with narrow closely spaced slots to form a comb and a plurality of hair shearing elements, and a movable member within said skin contacting member contacting with the slotted portion thereof to provide a shearing element cooperating with the first mentioned shearing elements.
2. A shaving device having, in combination, a skin contacting member formed to present a thin walled annular part having a face portion and an outer side wall inclined outwardly of said face portion, said face portion and wall provided with narrow closely spaced slots to form a comb and a plurality of hair shearing elements, and a rotary member within said skin contacting member contacting with the slotted portion thereof to provide a shearing element cooperating with the first mentioned shearing elements.
3. A shaving device having, ,in combination, means forming a thin walled annular skin contacting bead having concentric oppositely divergingside walls, said walls and the face portion of said bead being formed with narrow closely spaced parallel slots to form a comb and a plurality of hair shearing elements, and a movable member in said bead contacting with the slotted portion thereof presenting a plurality of'shearing elements cooperating with the first mentioned shearing elements.
4. A shaving device having, in combination,
. means forming a thin walled annular skin contacting bead having concentric oppositely diverging side walls, said walls and the face portion of said bead being formed with narrow closely spaced I parallel slots to form. a comb and a plurality of hair shearing elements, and a rotary member in said bead contacting with the slotted portion thereof presenting a plurality of shearing elements cooperating with the first mentioned shearing elements.
5. A shaving device having, in combination, a skin contacting member formed to present a thin walled annular bead having an outer annular fiat face confined to a single plane and annular relatively flaring side walls, said head being formed with narrow closely spaced parallel slots intersecting the face and at least the outer side wall of said bead to form on said face and side wall of said bead a comb and a plurality of hair shearing elements, and a movable member in said head presenting a plurality of shearing elements in contact with the slotted portion of said bead and cooperating with the first mentioned shearing elements.

A shaving device having, in combination, a skin contacting member formed to present a thin walled annular bead having an outer annular flat face confined to a single plane and annular relatively flaring side walls, said bead being formed with narrow closely spaced parallel slots inters'ecting the face and at least the outer side wall of said bead to form on said face and side wall of said head a comb and a plurality of hair shearing elements, and a rotary member in said bead presenting a plurality of shearing elements in contact with the slotted portion of said bead and cooperating with the first mentioned shearing elements.

A shaving device having, in combination, a skin contacting member formed to present a thin walled annular bead having an annular face confined to a single plane and annular oppositely inclined side walls, so that the bead in cross-section radially thereof presents a V-shaped contour with the apex of the V cut away, said bead being formed with a plurality of closely spaced parallel slots intersecting the face and side walls of said tion radially thereof presents a V-shaped contour with the apex of the V cut away, said bead being formed with a plurality of closely spaced parallel slots intersecting the face and side walls of said bead to form on said face and side walls a comb and a. plurality of hair shearing elements, and a rotary member in said bead presenting a plurslity of shearing elements cooperatlng with the first mentioned shearing elements.
