TREMONT W. RIOKEL AND GEORGE A. CARPENTER, OF CASEY, IOWA;
SAID RIOKEL ASSIGNOR TO SAID CARPENTER. 7
COMBINED STOVE-PIPE DAMPER AND (JLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,964, dated November 6, 1883.
' Application filed August 18,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Tnnnonr W. RIOKEL and GEORGE A. CARPENTER, citizens of the and general efliciency.
To this end it consists in certain improve ments in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved combined cleaner and damper, and Fig. 2 isa longitudinal vertical sectional view, showing the same arranged in a stove-pipe in position for operation.
The same letters refer to the same parts in both figures. i
A in the drawings designates an oblong band or bail, between the sides of which is pivoted the damper-plate B. The latter consists of a circular disk, of metal, having at its upper edge a curved sharp-edged projection, C, which forms a scraper. Around its edge the disk B is also provided with forwardlyextending curved projections D D, forming runners or guides for the plate when .thelatter is moved in or drawn through the stove-pipe for the purpose of cleaning the same, as will be presently more fully described.
Attached to the face of the dampenplate, some distance ,above the axial or pivoting line, is a hinged rod, E, extending through a perforation, F, in the band or bail A. The front end of this rod has an operating-handle, G, and it is provided with a knee or shoulder, H, adapted to abut against the bail A when the damper-plate is raised to a vertical position.
In operation the damper is placed in the stove-pipe, near the chimney, and in this position it is held or retained by the bail A,
which is made slightly bulging, and which, by
pressing against the sides of the pipe, will retain the device in position with a sufficient degree of security. The operating-rod will project through the elbow, so as to be accessible for the purpose of operating the device. By means of the said rod it will be seen that the damper may be readily manipulated, while,
in order to clean the pipe from accumulated dirt andsoot, it is only necessary to draw it forward, thereby raising the damper-plate to a vertical position and drawing it through the pipe. By pushing the rod back the device may be readily returned to its original position.
It will be seen that by means of this device the stove pipe may be thoroughly cleaned without taking it down. The device is simple in construction, inexpensive, and may be easily applied to any ordinary stovepipe.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States A 1. The combination of the oblong bail or band, the damper-plate pivoted in the same, andthe operating-rod hinged to the face of said plate, above the axial line, and extending forward through a perforation in the bail, substantially as set forth.
2. The damper-disk B, having scraper C and curved projections or runners D, substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
3. The herein-described combined damper and cleaner for stove-pipes, the same consisting of a bail or holder, at damperdisk pivoted in the same, and provided with the curved scraper G and projections or runners D D, and the operating-rod E, hinged to the face of the damper-plate, above the axial line, extending through the bail and through the stove-pipe elbow, and provided with the knee or shoulder H, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
TREMONT W. RIGKEL. GEO. A. CARPENTER.
