IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-PIPE CLEANERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,642, dated August 1, 1871.

To all whom fit may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES F. KELLOGG, of North Bridgewater', in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Device for Facilitating the Removal of Soot, Ashes, Ste., from StovePipes or Funnels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a stove-funnel having my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the center of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improvement detached; Fig. 4, detail to be referred to.

Stove-pipes or tunnels, especially where wood is employed as fuel, require to be frequently taken down in order to remove the soot, ashes, 85e., which collect therein, the greater part accumulating' in the horizontal portion of the funnel, within two or three feet ofthe elbow. This operation is, however, a source of much trouble and annoyance, as it requires considerable time to remove, elean, and replace the funnel within the apartment, while the furniture, carpets, 85e., contained therein are liable to be soiled or injured.

My invention has for its object to overcome these difficulties; and consists in a removable sliding trough, which is applied to the funnel so as to extend for a short distance along the bottom of the horizontal portion thereof, for the purpose of receiving the soot "or dirt which may thus be readily removed by withdrawing the trough, thereby avoiding the necessity of taking down the funnel, as has heretofore been required.

To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which lha-ve carried it out.

In the said drawing, A represents the funnel, at the upper end of the vertical portion t of which is formed an opening, b, directly opposite the horizontal portion c of the funnel. Through this opening b is inserted a sheet-metal trough, B, of semicircular form in cross-section, which rests on the bottom ofthe horizontal portion c of the funnel so as to receive the soot, ashes, Ste., the greater portion of which collects within two or three feet of the elbow. C is an opening formed in the bottom of the trough B, and when the latter is in place, as seen. in Fig. 2, this opening lies over the vertical portion a, so as to leave the passage through the funnel entirely unobstructed. To the outer end of the trough B is secured a curved plate or cap, D, which serves to close the opening b,- an d this plate is provided with a ring, d, to facilitate the withdrawal or insertion of the trough. The soot, Ste., may thus be readily removed by withdrawing the trough B and emptying it into a suitable receptacle, thereby avoiding the necessity of removing the funnel and the cousequent dirt and litter incident thereto. When the trough B has been withdrawn a rod, E, Fig. 4., provided with a curved scraper, e, at its end, may be inserted at the opening b for the purpose of reaching and withdrawing any soot lying beyond the inner end of the trough, and after the soot has been drawn up to near the elbow the trough may be inserted to receive it and then withdrawn, as before. By drawing out the trough B a short distance, as seen in Fig. 1, it serves as a ventilating-damper to admit air at this point.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The removable trough B, in combination with the cap D and the funnel A, constructed and applied substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
