HAT
Filed April 17, 1956 United States Patent() HAT Charles L. Roy Welton, Saratoga, Wyo. Application April 17, 1956, Serial No. 578,803 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-175) This invention relates to an article to be worn and more particularly to a hat.
The object of the invention is to provide a hat which includes a crown and brim, there being a means provided for maintaining the brim immobile in its various adjusted positions.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hat of the Western style which is highly decorative and comfortable to wear, there being a means provided for maintaining the rim immobile in its various adjusted positions,
and whereby there is further provided a means for permitting the crown of the hat to be adjusted so that the hat can be worn by persons with different sizes of heads or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a Western style hat which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture. t
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hat, constructed according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken through the hat.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a side elevationalfview of the hat.
Figure 6 is a sectional View taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a view illustrating the wire member for maintaining the brim immobile in its adjusted position.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the crown of the hat, while the numeral 11 designates the brim, and the crown and brim can be made of any suitable material such as leather. The crown and brim of the hat are adapted to have fanciful or decorative ornamentations thereon, as shown in Figures l and 5 so as to enhance the attractiveness of the hat.
The crown 10 includes a top wall 12, and a substantially cylindrical or annular side wall 13, the top wall 12 and side wall 13 beingsecured together by suitable stitchings 14, Figure 2.
The brim 11 may consist of an upper section 15 and a lower section 16, and these sections 15 and 16 dene adjacent their outer ends a continuous pocket 17 which receives a wire support member 18, Figures 6 and 7. Due to the provision of the wire support member 18, the brim 11 can be folded to different positions and the rigidity of the wire will cause the brim to maintain its various adjusted positions. Stitching 19 may be used for securing the brim 11 to a lower horizontal portion 20 which projects outwardly from the bottom of the side wall 13 of the crown 10. Lacing 21 may be secured to the outer portion of the brim 11, and suitable decorations 22 and 23 may be provided on the brim 11 and crown 10 for increasing the attractiveness of the hat.
There is further provided a means for permitting the size of the hat to be adjusted as desired so that it can be comfortably worn by the user. This means is shown in detail in Figures 3 and 4 and includes a body member 24 which may be made of a suitable piece of iiexible metal. The body member 24 is provided in one end thereof with a plurality of spaced apart openings or apertures 25, while the other end of the body member 24 is provided with a hook 26 which is adapted to engage the openings 25. By positioning the hook 26 in dilerent of the openings 25, the lower portion of the crown 10 can be compressed or permitted to expand so that the hat can be comfortably worn by the user.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that there has been provided a hat of the Western style or type which includes the crown 10 and wide brim 11. The hat can be made of any suitable material or can be made of any desired size and shape and the hat may be provided with suitable ornamentations or decorations 22 and 23 orthe like so as to enhance the attractiveness of the hat. The brim 11 of the hat has the wire body member 18 mounted in its outer edge and due to the inherent resiliency and bendability of the wire 18, the brim 11 can be removed from the solid line position snown in Figure 2 to the broken line position in Figure 2 and the brim will retain or remain in the broken line position after it has been moved to tnis position. Furthermore, the side wall 13 or' the crown 10 can be compressed or permitted to expand by engaging the hook 26 with different of the openings 25. Thus, by moving the hook 26 into engagement with the various openings 25, the effective size of the band or body member 24 can be varied whereby the hat can tbe cworn comfortably or made to lit different sizes of ea s.
The hat may be lined with a suitable leather sweatband and other suitable material can be used for the lining if desired. Also nylon mesh can be inlaid for summer use so as to insure that the hat will be cool during warm weather. The hat may be made of any suitable material such as boot leather, and the hat may be made in different colors. The parts can be secured together in any suitable manner, as for example, by suitable stitching. The hat may be made to match boots, coats, or the like and various colors or color combinations can be used. The lacing 21 can also be of any desired color and ifl desired ventilation openings can be provided for providing a cool hat for summer use.
I claim:
In a hat, a crown including an annular adjustable side wall having a horizontal portion extending outwardly from the lower edge thereof; and a top wall extending across the top of said side wall and secured thereto, an adjustable brim extending outwardly from the lower edge of said side wall and secured thereto, and means for maintaining said brimimmobile in its adjusted position, said means comprising a wire support member, said brim including an upper and lower section arranged in superposed relation with respect to each other, the outer portions of said sections being spaced apart to dene a pocket for receiving said wire support member, the inner portions of said sections being spaced apart` to dene a pocket for receiving the horizontal portion on the lower edge of said side wall and an adjustable body member extending around the outer portion of said side wall adjacent the lower edge thereof to retain said side wall in selective adjusted positions.
