I J. K. MINIGH. TRY SQUARE AND BEVEL. No; 287,847. Patented Nov. 6, 1883.
WITNESSES W INVW UNI ED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
JACOB K. MINIOH, OF NORTH HAMPTON, HIO.
TRY- SQUARE AND B EVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,847, dated November 6,1883.
V Application filed September 25, 1883. (No model.)
To this end it consists in certain details of 7 construction and combination of parts, whereby I attain superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, convenience, and general eff ciency.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view, showing the combined try-square and bevel in the closed position. Fig. 2 is a side View illustrating the bevel in its opened position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same. 7
Like letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, Adesignates the a handle, and-B the blade or plate, of an ordinary T or'try square, the inner face of the handle being provided with a metallic plate or strip, a, secured theretoas a means for protecting wear.
The blade or plate Bis slotted or recessed along its entire length and about half its width, as shown at G, and in this recess or slot is fitted a plate, D, which serves as a bevel in framing. The plate D has a longitudinal slot, E, extending along about onehalf of its length, and abolt, G, passes through theend of plate B and engages with the slot E, a thumb-screw, F, binding the plate D within the slot or recess 0 of the plate Bat any point desired.
The inner end of the plate D is rounded, as at d, to permit the free movement of said plate in any direction within the slot 0, and the other end of said plate is provided with an enlargement, c, by means of which the plate can be withdrawn from ,the recess when it is desired to use the same as a bevel.
The operation of my invention can be read- I try square can be used for-its ordinary purposes, since the bevel will not interfere with free movement of the same; but when it is desired to use the bevel in framing or other purposes, the plate D can be withdrawn from the recess or slot 0 by means of the enlargement which projects a short distance beyond the try-square. The slot E of. the plate D permits the movements and positions of said plate to be varied accordingly as the workman wishes, and thus the degrees of the angles are correspondingly increased or dimin' ished.
It will be seen that the placing of the bevel within a recess or slot of the try-square blade admits of its free use in connection there= with. I
My invention is simple, convenient, and efficient, and will prove of considerable aid to those having use for the same. a I l Having described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In a combined try-square and bevel, the plate D, fitting within a slot or recess of the blade of the try-square, as set forth.
2. In a try-square, the blade B, having a. slot or recess therein, in combination with a plate, D, fitting Within the slot or recess, and having a longitudinal slot, E, at one end, as set forth. 3. In a try-square, the blade 13, having a slot or recess therein, in combination with the plate D, fitting within the slot or recess, and having a longitudinal slot at one end, a thumbscrew and bolt connecting the plate D to the plate B, the inner end of the plateD being rounded, as set forth. L
4. In a try-square, the blade B, having a slot or recess therein, in combination with the plate D, fitting within the slot or recess, and having a longitudinal slot at one end,a thumbscrew connecting the two plates together, the 5 inner end of the plateD'being rounded, and the outer end being formed with an enlargement,
c, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixedmy signature in m presence of two witnesses.
