(Cl. 5-131) This invention relates to beds and particularly to the frames thereof, the beds being of the Hollywood type so-called wherein head boards of various sizes and types may be used with the same basic frame elements.
More particularly the invention is directed toward the provision of novel clamping means, availed of to fasten and maintain portions of the frame in fixed relation and connect the head board permanently or removably therewith.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of the novel devices as mentioned above which enable adjustment of the various parts as well as fastening the same, the adjustment being simply accomplished and without damaging the head board as heretofore, or requiring a skilled mechanic to carry out the required manipulation.
It is therefore a principal object of the invention to provide novel adjustable clamping or gripping devices to engage transverse frame members and make possible easy positioning of side rails, whereby springs or mattresses of varying widths may be used.
A further object of the invention is to provide devices as .above mentioned which are readily manipulated to accommodate varying sizes of head boards, the head boards being in turn fastened to the side rails.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide novel clamping devices on the side rails which will grip and maintain `a head board in position after the transverse rails have been adjusted, said head board being removable if desired since the clamping devices do not require screw fastenings or other types of conventional connection or which would leave permanent marks thereon such as bolts and the like.
A still further object of the invention is to provide the clamping devices just above described, which are constructed to provide a bracing effect in use and thus stiffen and in reality strengthen the frame as a whole, there being little or no tendency for the devices to loosen after a time. If in fact such loosening takes place, simple manipulation by the ordinary user may be resorted to and the desired rigidity restored.
Another object of the invention is to provide clamping devices as above described which are themselves of novel form and may be constructed so as to be not only unobtrusive in appearance but be made of inexpensive material in simple shape.
Other and further objects of the invention will be understood from a consideration of the specification appended hereto and set forth in conjunction with a description relating to the drawings wherein:

Referring now to the drawings and initially to Figures 4 and 5 in order to describe generally the type of bed to which this invention is-directed, it will be seen that in Figure 4, the usual Hollywood bed frame is provided as far as certain elements are concerned, these elements comprising the parallel side rails indicated at 1 and 2 and taken about on the line the side rail 1 being equipped with a pair of transverse rails 3 and 4, of somewhat more than half the maximum span of the bed, these transverse rails 3 and 4 being connected in each case as by means of the rivet connections 5 for example. As will be readily understood and is well known, the side rails and in fact all of the rails thus far described, are of the usual angle iron type,l

It should be readily understood that the transverse rail members 3 and 4 are connected as seen in Figure 1,`
these transverse rails being equipped with the leg members 7 wise formed of the usual angle iron part suitably fastened to the transverse rails 3 and 4 in any preferred manner.
Extending from the other side rail 2, are mating rails v 9 and 10, being of similar shape and length to the rails 3 and 4 previously described, and being likewise fastened as by means of the rivets 11 for purposes well understood in the art, namely that of enabling the respective parts to be folded into position so as to lie in parallelism with the side rail 2, this also being true of the members 3 and 4 with respect to the side rail 1 previously mentioned.
It will also be understood that the transverse rail members 9 and 10 are equipped with the legs 13 and 14 respec tively, previously referred to and likewise being fastened to the transverse rails 9 and 10 in the same manner or in any preferred manner so as to be rigidly engaged therewith.
Turning now to a consideration of Figure 8 in conjunc' tion with the description of Figures 4 and 5, one of the clamping devices or means to which this invention is directed is shown as comprising a V-shaped member 15.

It should be noted kfirst of all that two forms of the clamping devices now to be described are shown in the drawings, either f the same being equally eicacious and suitably arranged so as to not only rigidity the entire structure but so as topinter-engage with and lock in place'the headv board without resorting to the usual screw or nut and bolt fastenings therefore.
' With the foregoing in mind the head board 24 of the usual shape and comprising a transverse member 2S suitably fastened at its end to the legs 26 and 27, the said legs 26 and 27 being square or rectangular as the case may be, the board 25 being of any preferred length. Each of the lrails 1 and 2 is provided with similar sort of clamping member at its end and therefore only one will be described in conjunction with Figures 1, 2, and 3 as well as 4, so as to particularly point out the novel construction thereof.
Revertingrnow to Figure 2, it will be seen that the rail 1 for example is provided with a vertical angle member 28, welded or otherwise secured at right angles to the member 1, so as to extend below the same as shown in Figure l. The angle member 28 is intended to provide a seat against which the rail 27 for example may be located, and in this condition thereagainst, in conjunction' with the operation of the clamping member now to be specifically set forth. The clamping member which is denoted 30, is a U shaped member including a connecting leg 31 and the head board leg engaging portion 32 with screw receiving section 33 all of the same being formed of a single member and U-shaped as will be apparent. The leg 33 of the U-shaped member 30 is provided with a suitable set screw yof the thumb screw type indicated at 34, suitably engaged with the portion 33 previously mentioned. The member 30 is further ar ranged so as to be received in a suitable slot seen best inFigure 3 and indicated at 35, said slot 35 being formed or pierced in the seat member 28 previously mentioned likewise.
The member 30 is so arranged with respect to the slot 3S and in fact the slot 35 is so formed in the member 28 that the end portion 33 of the member 30 will engage with the under part 1a of the rail member 1, and when thoroughly tightened up by means of the set screw so as to draw the portion 32 into engagement with the leg 27, a bearing face is provided by the under section 1a previously referred to, this being best illustrated in Figure 1. Therefore when any tendency of the leg 27 is noted as -being in a direction Asuch as illustrated by the arrow A, pressure will be exerted on the part 32 and thence against the bearing plate 28, and in turn to the under surfaces 1a of the rail 1. kConversely when pressi'e is exerted inl the direction of the arrow B on the l e`g 27, the bearing plate 28 will withstand the same in conjunction with'the'part 30 and thumb screw as controlled thereby.
It should be understoodlthat the other leg 26 of the board 24, is suitably mountedin a similar type oli clamping arrangement, the corresponding parts bearing the same numbers since they are the same shape and corresponding size. i
In view of the above it will be readily seen that by positioningr the head board at any certain place, the members including parts 30 On the ends of the rails 1 and 2 may be brought linto engagement and the thumb screws tightened so as to position the board with regard thereto and thereafter the clamping device 15 having been previously emplaced is tightened `on the transverse rails 3 and 9 and 4 and 10, to thereafter enable the same to be drawn up by the thumb screws provided and rigidly unite the entire unit, without resorting to any of the usual fastening devices as previously stated.
Referring now to the other form of clamping device which may be used in place of the device 30 of Figures l to 3 inclusive, there is shown in Figures 5 to 7 inclusive a similar arrangement, involving the clamping member generally designated 40,-the same being of U-shaped configuration inI plan and involving the provision of a connecting Yweb 41 integral with a leg or extension 42 and a further portion 43 the entire unit being U-shaped as was the unit 30 previously described. t
The ends of therails 1 and 2, in this case the rail 2 being illustrated, may be similarly provided with bearing plates 44 fastened so as to -be vertically related to the rail'2, the clamping member 40 being mounted below the rail 2 and adapted to bear at its portion 42 against the section of face 2a of the said rail. In order to maintain the member 40 in place, the bearing plate or angle member '44 is equipped with a rivet such as 46, the said rivet passing through a slot 41 formed in the member 40. In this particular case it will benoted that the bearing plate or angle member 44 is reversed as respects the end of the rail 2 so as to Partly encircle or enclose the member 26, thus being provided a more rigid bearing than might otherwise be possible.
In any event, it will be apparent that by adjusting the set screw 49 provided, same being mounted in a suitable threaded opening 50 of the portion 42 of the member 40, the part 43 will be brought into engagement with the face of the post 26 and in conjunction with the bearing member 44 rigidly maintain the head rail in place.
In as much as the general arrangement of the parts of the views illustrated in Figures 5 to 7 inclusive serves the 'same purpose as is true with the parts in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, no further description of the same is deemed necessary.
In any event, it will be seen that a novel arrangement for such frames is provided whereby the same may be entirely assembled without resort to the usual or common fastening means such as screws Or bolts, and that Iwide variation in adjustment is possible so as to adapt the basic unit to t any preferred lengths of head rail is made possible. Further by means of the novel forms of clamping members provided, a rigid unit is furnished in the 'final assembly thereof, and any person of ordinary skill may assemble the same.
We claim:
l. In a bedframe of the class described, in combination, a headboard, a pair of side rails, a pair of transverse rails extending from each side rail, the transverse rails extending from one side rail being positioned so as to overlap those ofthe other, a rst pair of L-shaped clamping members having inwardly extending sections partially surrounding the transverse rails, each having an adjustable device to cause said members to grip said rails, and
`a second pair of` clamping members, one mounted at each correspondingend of` a side rail, each ofsaid second pair of clamping members being U-shaped and including a` portionengaging-said headboard, 'and other portions engaging 'theside rail' providing the mounting therefor, andadjustable' parts for eifecting gripping action of said mem-bers* with the headboard aforesaid.
2. The combination as claimed in claim l, wherein each of the second pair of clamping members includes a generally U-shaped body, one of the arms of said body lbeing adapted to engage a surface of the headboard, :and the other arm of said body having a set screw threadedly engaged therewith, said arm likewise engaging its corresponding side rail, corresponding ends of the side rails having bearing plates thereon, against which the headboard is positioned by the arms mentioned.
3. The combination as claimed in claim 2, wherein the bearing plates are arranged to enable the headboard to be positioned thereagainst and likewise to act as fulcrums for the set screws mentioned.
4.v The combination as claimed in claim 1, wherein each of the rst pair of clamping members comprise a substantially L-shaped body, an inturned flange at each extremity and a set screw threadedly engaged in one of the legs of said body.
5. In a ybed frame of the class described, in combination, a headboard, transverse and side rails, each side rail having a bearing plate at an end thereof, each said bearing plate being seated against a part of the headboard, a clamping member engaged with each bearing plate and formed so as to clampingly engage such headboard part, each said member 4bearing against a side rail to limit movement of such member, and instrumentalities co-acting with each said memberl and its corresponding plate 'to maintain such member in xed relation to the headboard part and in bearing contact with the side rail adjacent thereto.
