FOLDABLE BEDSPRING.
. Application filed November 22,1926. Serial no.,14e,s07.
This invention relates to a foldable bed spring. Q.
The principal objectofthe invention is .to provide a simple and inexpensive detach- I able connection for foldable sections of a bed spring frame permitting of the quick and easy attachment and detachment" of the frame sections when the bed spring is being set up for use or knocked down for folding the same, as for example when thesame is to be moved. By virtue of my improved connection the matter of carrying the bed spring around corners in hallways and up and down stairs is relieved of all of its annoyances as the bed spring when folded up is of sufficiently small and practicable size. Furthermore, the connection is such as to be unnoticeablc when the bed spring is set up and mounted in the bedstead, and is also ofsufficient sturdiness to give positive assurance against breakage.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanving drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed spring of any standard or preferred type having the end frame sections provided with my improved detachable connection; and
Fig. 2 is a view looking at the inner side of one of the end frame spans showing the angle iron frame sections joined in accordance with my invention. the parts of the connection being shown partly in elevation and partly in section for purposes of better il-' lustration.
s a The frame of the bed spring 5 comprises the usual side members 6 and end members 7. I prefer to have the end. members 7 split at the middle. as indicated at 8, to provide separate angle iron frame sections 9 and 10. arranged to be detachablv connected as indicated generally by 11. The connection, as will hereinafter appear, is such as to permit the setting-up and knocking down of the bed spring frame with ease and fa- 5 cility so that it becomes possible for a person to move the bed spring single handed and without any appreciable difficulty in getting around corners in hallways and up and down stairs. As will be noted in Fig. 1.
the detachable connection is hardly at all noticeable when the bed spring is set up,
due to the fact that it is contained within the angle of the angle iron frame sections.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 2, it
will be noted that the detachable connection 11 comprises a pair of blocks 12 and 13 of rectangular crosssection t0 fit within the angle of the angle iron frame sections 9 and 10, as shown. The blocks are cast with relieved ends to provide attaching portions 15 ofangular cross section permitting the riveting ofthe blocks securely to the frame sections; as indicated at 16. Any formof attachment may be employed forassembling the blocks permanentlybn'the frame sections. The blocks are also cast to provide heads 17 and 18 arranged to be disposed in abutting relation at the adjoining ends of the frame sections. tangular socket 19 cast therein, the walls of which taper inwardly, as shown. The head 18 has a rectangular boss 20 of complcmental form to the socket 19 so as to fit wedgingly therein to provide for interengagement of the heads and properly align the frame sections. Openings 21 and 22 extending lengthwise through the heads 17 and 18 are arranged to register when the heads are interengaged so that a bolt 23 may be passed therethrough to join the heads together. The head 24 of the bolt 23 is of reduced diameter so-as to be free to turn within the relieved portion 14: of the block 13 and has a slot 25 to receive a screw driver whereby the bolt may be turned in ti ghtening or loosening the same. A large square nut 26 is threadedly received on the end of the bolt 23 and is held against turning when the bolt is tighten-ed or loosened by reason of its engagement with the sides of there lieved portion 14-. of the block 12.
It will appear from the foregoing that the attachment and detachment of the frame sections is a simple matteras the same involves a mere screw driver operation. The
The head 17 has a reccross section arranged to the-\detaehahly,
as described above. The construction is ob viously simple and inexpensive as Well as unbreakable.
I claim:
In a foldable bed spring, the co1nbination with a pair of frame sections of :angle joined together, of a pair 01 blocks of rec tangular cross section to fit within the-angles of the angle frame sections, saidbloeks being relieved to provide attaching portions of angular cross section to be -secur ed with-in theQangle (it the angle frame seetions, the blocks provi'ding alongside the relieved ,portions a pair of abutting lhead portions whereby the fbloeks rnay be ,detach ably joined toge her, .0116 ;o'f said 7 portions "having ,reetangnlar inwardly tapering socket, the othe "head ,ipn tion aving a .boss of complemental formifor Wedging: engagement ,in said. socket, openings provided in said head portions- ,extending lengthwise with ,re-
tions together, said bolt having the headthereof-of reduced diameter to be free to turn in the relieved portion of one of said blocks and provided With a screw driver slot whereby the bolt may be turned in tightening or loosening the same, and a ut in the relieved portion; of the other block and v.threa'dedly engaged on said :bolt and prevented from turning in the tightening or loosening of the bolt byreason of its engagement ithrthe sides of'the relieved portion of the block.
In Witness of the foregoing I affix my signature.
,FRANK SMITH;
