  • My invention relates to and has for its object to provide an improved form of wrench of the type comprising a stock or body having an integral jaw for engaging nuts of a certain size and shape, with which jaw a supplemental jaw member, one of a set of such members, for example, of different character can be engaged, whereby the wrench is adapted for use upon nuts or other machine elements of different sizes and shapes; and the invention consists in certain novel arrangements for engaging the supplemental jaw member with the integral jaw which allows the supplemental jaw member to be conveniently put in place and removed, and provides a rigid and reliable connection between the parts of the supplemental jaw.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. BUKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chi cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to and has for its object to provide an improved form of wrench of the type comprising a stock or body having an integral jaw for engaging nuts of a certain size and shape, with which jaw a supplemental jaw member, one of a set of such members, for example, of different character can be engaged, whereby the wrench is adapted for use upon nuts or other machine elements of different sizes and shapes; and the invention consists in certain novel arrangements for engaging the supplemental jaw member with the integral jaw which allows the supplemental jaw member to be conveniently put in place and removed, and provides a rigid and reliable connection between the parts of the supplemental jaw.
The invention is illustrated in certain preferred embodiments in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of a wrench of the S type having an integral jaw at each end, which jaws are adapted to receive supplemental jaws.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view, on a larger scale, taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a View, in elevation, of one end of the wrench and a supplemental jaw memthe latter being removed from the wrench.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 isa view, in elevation, of a modified form of the invention.
Figs. 6 and 7 are sectional views, taken at right angles to each other, illustrating the construction of the wrench shown in elevation in Fig. 5, and
Figs. 8 and 9 are views corresponding to Figs. 6 and 7, respectively, illustrating another modification.

Referring first to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the wrench here shown consists of a metal stock or body 10 formed at opposite ends with jaw portions 11, 12, the aws or recesses of which are preferably of different size. '13 and 14 are supplemental jaws adapted to fit into the jaws 11, 12, respectively. The arrangements at opposite ends of the wrench may be the same except for difference 1n span of the jaws.
Figs. 2, 3 and -1 illustrate the left hand end of the wrench shown in Fig. 1. The jaw member 13 is formed at each side with a pair of flanges 15 which overlap the side faces of the integral jaw portion 11. It is also formed with a lug or projection 16, the inner surface of which has an indentation 17 to receive the end of a. locking pin 18 arranged in a recess 19 in the integral jaw 11, the pin extending through an opening 20 and having a head 21 against which bears the spiral spring 22 seated on a plug 23 which closes recess 19.
In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 the supplemental jaw member 24 is formed with a tongue 25 midway between the planes of its side surfaces, which tongue is adapted to enter a slot 26 formed in the integral aw member 27. The tongue 25 has notches or indentations 28 on opposite edges, one of which is engaged by the spring pressed locking device 29 arranged in a recess 30 in the integral jaw portion of the wrench. The removable jaw member is preferably formed with flanges 31 overlapping the side faces of the integral jaw, the purpose of these flanges and of the corresponding flanges shown in the form of wrench first described, being to insure a rigid engagement between the removable jaw and the integral jaw.
This rigidity of engagement may be accomplished 'in another way, as shown in Figs. 8 and 9. In this construction the removable jaw member 32 is formed with lateral projections or lugs 33 which enter slots 34 formed on the inner parallel faces of the integral jaw. Jaw member 32 is preferably provided with a pair of flanged rojections 35 overlapping the side faces of t e integral jaw. One of these flanges is formed with an indentation 36 to receive the spring pressed locking device 37.
I have shown the recesses of both the integral jaws and the removable j aw members as rectangular but it will be quite possible to make either jaw hexagonal or, if desired, a supplemental jaw member can be provided having a serrated face to adapt the wrench to a curved surface. While I have shown a similar supplemental jaw for each integral jaw it will be understood that a set of such supplemental aws might be provided adapted to fiteach integral jaw, in which case the different members in the set will have a different span or contour.
The locking pin which holds the supplemental jaw in place will readily yield, the extremity of the locking pin being preferably rounded as shown, to permit the supplemental jaw to be put in place and removed. This locking device serves to hold the parts in proper engagement, the engaging flanges upon the supplemental jaw preventing any looseness or turning of the supplemental jaw in its place.
I claim:
1. A wrench comprising, in combination, a stock having an integral jaw portion at one end, a U-shaped supplemental jaw member adapted to fit into the aforesaid jaw, the outer sides of the legs of said U- shaped supplemental jaw member and the inner faces of the sides of said integral jaw having interlocking portions adapted to retain said jaws in the same plane, and a spring pressed locking device to hold'said supplemental member in place.
2. A wrench comprising, in combination, a stock having an integral jaw portion at one end, a U-shaped supplemental jaw member adapted to fit into the aforesaid jaw, each leg thereof having flanges adapted to bear against the sides of the integral jaw and a spring pressed locking device for holding said supplemental jaw member in place.
3. A wrench comprising, in combination, a stock formed with a recess and having an integral portion at one end, a U-shaped supplemental jaw member formed with an indentation and adapted to fit into the aforesaid jaw, each leg thereof having flanges adapted to bear against the sides of the integral jaw, and a spring pressed looking pin in said recess adapted to engage the indentation in the supplemental jaw member.
4. A wrench comprising, in combination, a stock formed with a recess and having an integral jaw portion at one end, a U-shaped supplemental jaw member formed with a flange and adapted to fit into the aforesaid.
jaw, the outer side of each leg thereof being formed with a groove adapted to receive the adjacent side portion of said integral jaw, said flange having an indentation in its inner face, and a spring pressed locking pin arranged in said recess and adapted to engage said indentation.
5. A wrench comprising, in combination, a stock formed with a recess and having an integral jaw portion at one end, a supple mental jaw member adapted to fit into the aforesaid jaw and formed with flanges adapted to overlap and bear against the outer side faces of the jaw portion of the stock on both sides thereof, and with a flange having an indentation on its inner face, and a spring pressed locking pin arranged in said recess and adapted to engage said indentation.
6. A wrench comprising, in combination, a stock formed with a recess and having an integral jaw portion at one end, the face of which transverse of the stock is formed with a recess which communicates with the first mentioned recess, a supplemental jaw member adapted to fit into the aforesaid jaw and formed with flanges adapted to overlap and bear against the side faces of the jaw portion of the stock on both sides thereof, and with a tongue to project into said second mentioned recess,-
and a spring pressed locking device arranged in the first mentioned recess and adapted to engage said tongue.
7. A wrench comprising, in combination, a stock formed with a recess and having an integral jaw portion at one end, the inner side faces of which are slotted, a supplemental jaw member adapted, to fit into the aforesaid jaw and formed with lateral projections which enter said slots and with a flange which overlaps one side of the integral jaw portion of the stock, and a spring pressed locking device arranged in'said recess which is adapted to engage saldflange.
