Description

F. C. AYER.
COMBINED WHIP AND NEIN HOLDEN.
(No Model.)
Patented Oct. 30

, UNITEDn STATES FRANK C. AYER, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO. v
COMBINED' WHIP AND REIN HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,493, dated October 30, 1883. Application filed August 12, 1882. (No model.) I
To a/ZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, FRANK C. AYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined NVhip and Rein Holder and Lock-Socket, ofv which the following is a specification.
Heretofore the rein-holder, the whip-holder, and loek-sockets have been separate applianees, or the rein holder combined with the lock socket or with the' whip holder, and formed as one device.
My invention consists more particularly in the automatic lock-socket, and the combination of the whip-holder, the rein-holder, and the lock-socket, forming one device, so that the three may be produced and sold as a single article of manufacture, and so that by the operation of applyingv the rein-holder you also apply the lock-socket and the whip-holder.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan showing the claws or locking device, which is placed within the socket. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of my invention, comprising a whip and rein holder and lock-socket ready to be applied to a vehicle dash-frame. Fig. 3 is a plan of the claws or locking device as seen from the top of the socket. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the spring which clamps the reins against the socket, holds the whip, and operates the socket; Fig. 5, a sectional view ofthe whip-holder and the locking device.
I am aware that locksockets operated by means of a key have been produced; but they are very objectionable, for several reasons' well known to the trade.
The socket A may be made in any desired form, but whatever the shape, it must form a bearing against which the whip may be clamped or heldby means of the spring.
F is a washer, to which are riveted claws G. The washer is placed in a groove within the socket, as shown at H, and the claws turn freely upon the rivets, and are operated or opened and closed by the spring.
D are lugs, to which the socket is attached, and C is a post, which may be attached to the dash-frame by any suitable means.
Fig. 3 of the drawings, thus securely locking the whip in the socket, so that it cannot be removed until the reins be iirst taken 4from the holder. Vhen the reins'are removed, the claws G are opened, as shown in Fig. l, and
the spring is free to extend toward the center of the socket, where it presses iirmly against the whip and holds it securely in the socket.
I claim as my inventionl. An automatic lock-soeket and spring, B, constructed to form a part of the whip and rein holder, and operating the lock, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the socket A, provided with the fixed slotted washer or ring F, and the supportingpost O, of the arms or claws G G, pivoted to said ring within said socket, and the spring B, connected at its upper end with said post, and at its lower end with the pivoted ends of said arms or claws, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
3. As a new article of manufacture, awhipsocket having an interior locking device of FRANK o. AYRR. [Lg s] Witnesses:
THOMAS H. Mo'GoY, A. H. FRI'roHEY.
