UTENSIL INCORPORATING A WRITING IMPLEMENT AND CIGARETTE HOLDER Filed Oct. 26, 1956 INVENTOR. HE/A/Z 600M! 5/? Unite Stats UTENSIL INCORPORATING A WRITING IMPLE- MENT AND CIGARETTE HOLDER Heinz Gossler, Heidelberg, Germany Application October 26, 1956, Serial No. 618,528 Claims priority, application Germany October 27, 1955 4 Claims. (Cl. 131-178) This invention relates to a combination writing implement and smokers holder for cigarettes and like articles.
It has already been proposed to combine a writing implement with a holder for smokers articles wherein the mouthpiece of the cigarette holder contains in its hollow bore a writing implement in the form of a ballpoint pen, fountain pen or the like, said mouthpiece also forming a closure cap over the writing implement when the latter is not in use and becoming a part of the cigarette holder having a sleeve-shaped end for the insertion of the cigarette. If the writing implement is to be used, then the mouthpiece is connected with its end over the sleeve-shaped end of the writing implement and forms a prolongation of the writing implement.
The body or barrel containing the writing implement proper is equipped with guide channelsserving for the passage of smoke, whereby in the front end near the tip of the writing impleme'nt small holes are provided which permit the how of cigarette smoke therethrough.
The present invention distinguishes from the known combination writing implement and smokers holder for cigarettes in that it proposes the employment of filter means for the cigarette smoke as well as ejector means for the cigarette butt.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide means facilitating the rapid conversion of a cigarette holder to a writing implement and conversely a speedy change of the writing implement to a cigarette holder.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide means facilitating the accommodation of useful articles, such as a ballpoint pen, in the bore of a hollow member, such as a barrel, which forms simultaneously a receptacle for a filter without interfering with the efliciency of a cigarette holder.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide means .afiording the combination with the barrel of the ballpoint pen and a protection for the filter housed therein and simultaneously facilitating the ejection of the cigarette butt when used as a cigarette holder.
It is further an object of the present invention to provide means envisaging the employment of a Writing implement which is provided with grooves which, in turn, when the writing implement is in assembled condition with said barrel, establish with the inner wall thereof passageways for the smoke to travel therethrough when the writing implement is converted into a cigarette holder.
These and other objects of the invention will become further apparent from the following detailed description, reference being made to the accompanying drawing showing preferred embodiments of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a utensil embodying the invention and showing in section a writing implement with filter and ejector together with a mouthpiece for a cigarette holder.
Fig. 2 illustrates a utensil in somewhat modified form,
Tee
Patented Jan. 27, 1959 2 shown in section, with filter, ejector and mouthpiece in different position.
Fig. 3 is a section of a utensil in further modified form.
.Fig. 4 is a side view of the writing implement showing a groove in a side thereof.
The combination smoking and writing implement hereinafter explained in greater detail may be manufactured from various materials, such as wood, resinous material, ivory, meerschaum, metal and the like, and these various materials can also be combined with each other to make up the aforesaid combination implement.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, there is shown in Fig. 1 a combination writing implement and holder for smokers articles made in accordance with the present invention. Such utensil 20 consists principally of a barrel 1 having internal threads at 4 and 4a. These threads may be used for the connection with a writing implement, such as a ballpoint pen 2, the forward end 2a of which has external screw threads to engage the screw threads 4 or 4a as desired.
According to Fig. 1, the writing implement 2, 2a is engaged with the threads 4a of the barrel 1 and this writing implement has adjacent its conical part at the forward end grooves 3, which, when the forward end 2a is threadedly engaged with the barrel 1, provide channels or passage means, which permit air or smoke to pass therethroug'n into the interior of the barrel 1. The Writing implement 2 has a cartridge 2b which is smaller than the inner diameter of the barrel 1, so that a ring-shaped space/1a is created within the barrel when the writing implement 2 is fixed therein.
Rearwardly of writing implement 2 and within barrel 1 there is positioned a filter cartridge 6 which may be held in position in any appropriate manner. I
The outer end portion 1b of barrel 1 is somewhat reduced in diameter and shaped to frictionally receive thereon part 5 of an ejector device 21. This ejector device consists of the upper part 5 from which'extends a tube 7 communicating with the hollow upper part 5. Tube '7 is surrounded by a coil spring 8, which is seated at one end on a shoulder 5a of part 5 and is seated at its other end against a partition 10 provided within ejector sleeve 9. Tube 7 is slidable through an opening in partition i0 and carries a disk 11 which is either threaded on or in any way connected with the outermost end of tube I 7. It .thus becomes apparent that upon sliding move ment of ejector sleeve 9 in the. direction of arrow A a cigarette butt seated within holder 9a will be readily pushed outwardly by means of disk member 11 whereby partition 10 compresses coil spring 8 during such movement.
there is seated a mouthpiece 12 which frictionally engages the outer surface of barrel 1. The mouthpiece 12 has the channels 12a and 125, the latter being sufficiently wide to receive the forward end 2a of the implement and to establish communication through the passageways 3. 1
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 2, there is shown in longitudinal section the ejector device 21 here tofore described in greater detail, which in this particular of the ejector device 21.
Over the forward part 2a of the writing implement 2,
pen and thenlplaced in engagementwvithsleeve 9 and over holder 9a, in the embodiment show-n in Fig. 2,.the stationarymember 5, when the utensil-Silis not to be used as a cigarette holder as -shown, may be readily withdrawn from tie forward end of the writing implement 2 and may then'be capped over the mouthpieeeiS so as to provide a prolongation o'f'barrel 13.
Thus the utensil may be used either in the-position of writing or in the position of working as a cigarette holder containing a filter cartridge as well as a ballpoint pen reservoir and an ejector device'for the cigarette butt.
According to Fig. 3, the mouthpiece 15c is screwed at 16 internally to one end of barrel 13 and contains filter cartridge 6 which extends from the mouthpiece 150 into the barrel 13w- Within barrel 130 there is arranged a writing implement 2 having the reservoir 2g and the forward end 2h provided with openings 14. In this particular embodiment only the stationary hollow member 17 is placed over the forward end 2]: for frictional engagement with the outer surface of the barrel 13c. This instrument may be readily used as a cigarette holder whereby the cigarette is placed with one of its ends in holder sleeve 9b. The stationary hollow member 17 is further provided with a partition 17a for the connection with a knownejector device (not shown).
It will be readily seen from the foregoing disclosure that the new combination writing implement and cigarette holder may receive a filter cartridge which is readily exchangeable or replaceable, as it is only necessary to unscrew the mouthpiece or the ejector device at 16 or 1b to remove the used cartridge.
Likewise the refill or reservoir 2b, 2d or 2 may be readily replaced by unscrewing the forward part of the ballpoint pen from the respective barrel. This forward end as pointed out hereinabove possesses one or more longitudinal grooves which, when the ballpoint pen with reservoir is connected with the resepctive barrel end, provide passageways from the front end of the barrel into the interior thereof. The mouthpiece as aforesaid may be either screwed to the other end of the barrel or placed in frictional engagement with the barrel, and over the forward end of the writingimplement or may be frictionally connected with the ejector device as hereinabove explained. The ejector device may also be placed either over the 'forward end of the ballpoint pen or over the mouthpieceof-the cigarette holder to thereby convert the instrument either into a writing implement with prolonged barrel portion or to a cigarette holder with ejector and filtering means seated in said barrel.
It can thus be seen that there has beenprovided according to the invention a utensil which is characterized by a hollow member forming a barrel with two ends, at least one of said ends of saidbarrel being providedwith inner threads, 21 writing implement including a forward part and a reservoir with a rearward end, said forward part being provided with threads for engagement with the threads of said one end of said barrel, a mouthpiece having an opening for frictionally engaging said barrel over said forward part ,of said implement-in one position of said mouthpiece, filtering means within said barrel between the other end thereof and the rearward end of said reservoir, ejector means provided with a stationaryghob iow member adapted to be capped over the other end of said'barrel.
Thestationary member has a tubular extension and an ejector sleeve slidable-relative tosaid stationary member, said'ejector sleeve being supported by a coil spring surrounding a tubular extension and seated with one end on said stationary member, and a partition in said ejector sleeve against which the other end of said coil spring abuts. The opening of said mouthpiece is dimensioned to be engaged with and placed over said ejector sleeve for frictional engagement therewith in another position; said forward part of said writing implement is provided with longitudinal grooves extending substantially parallel to the axis of said reservoir. The reservoir is reduced in diameter relative 'to the hollow barrel to permit passage of smoke from said ejector device through said filtering means and said barrel past said writing implement in said one position of said mouthpiece.
Various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention and itis intended that such obvious changes and modifications be embraced by the annexed claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be'secured byLetters Patent. is:
