UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. WRIGHT, OF GENTRETON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- THIRDS TO A. J. LAMBORN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,986, dated October 16, 1883.
Application filed August 31,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centreton, in the county of Burlington, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Picks, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a pick embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section thereof in line 00 m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists in producing the head of a pick with means for lockiug'the bits, the the same being retained in position by the handle.
Referring to the drawings, A represents thehead of a pick, B the handle or helve, and O the bits thereof, the latter being variously constructed, as well known.
D represents latches, one for eachbit, the same being pivoted to the head and occupying recesses a, which are formed on what may be termed the upper side of the head, the pivotal ends of the latches being adjacent to the bit-sockets b, and the opposite ends projecting toward the eye 0, so as to be flush therewith. On the under side of each latch is a nose or tongue, E, which is adapted to enter a recess or groove, E, formed on the inner end' of the bit, and a recess or groove,F, adapted to enter a nose or tongue, F, formed on the head A. The latch is also slotted as at d, and through the slot the pivotal pin 6 is passed, whereby thelatch is permitted to slide -in a direction to and from the eye of the head,
and likewise turn on said pin, as shown by the dotted lines.
The operation is as follows: When the latches are moved out of position, (see'dotted lines, Fig. 2,) the bits are inserted into the sockets and the latches then turned inwardly and downwardly to full extent, the tongues E entering the grooves E, the contiguous faces whereof are rounded. The latches are bits and head, are interlocked and the bits prevented from leaving the sockets. The handle is now fitted in the eye, and, as it bears against the portion of the latches. coincident with said eye, it controls the latches and prevents them. leaving their seats, so that the bits are securely held and can only be removed by the displacement of the handle, which latter being accomplished the latches may be cleared of the noses F and then swung out of the head, thus releasing the bits and permitting them to be withdrawn from the sockets of the head.
I do not limit myself to the number of latches, as the pick-head may have a single socket, in which case but one bit and latch are employed, and the latch or latches may be located on the under side of the head without producing different results from those stated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 4. A pick-head having a tongue, F, in
combination with a latch pivoted to said head, formed with a tongue, E, and groove F, and a bit having a groove, E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. V
5. A pick-head having a pivotal pin and tongue, in combination with a latch formed with a slot, a tongue and groove and a bit provided with a groove, substantially as described, one end of the latch being coincident with the eye of the pick-head, so as to be controlled by the handle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
