ADJUSTABLE HINGE Filed July 19, 1955 INVEN TOR.
.Carl 7.' Nielsen Afrn RN EYs This invention relates to a hinge, and more particularly to an adjustable hinge for doors and the like.
The object ofthe invention is to provide an adjustable hinge which is constructed so that a door or the like can be readily made to tit properly in a door jamb.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable hinge which is provided with cutaway portions and slots, the slots serving to weaken certain parts of the hinge, :so that the door can be readily adjusted or moved to its proper position, even with the hinge attached to the door and to the door jamb.
A further object of the invention is to provide an ad justable hinge which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the adjustable hinge of the present invention, shown mounted on a door and door jamb, and with parts of the door and door jamb broken away.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an elevational view of one of the plates of the hinge.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral designates a door jamb, while the numeral 11 designates a door, and the present invention is directed to an adjustable hinge whereby the door 11 can be made to lit properly with respect to the jamb 10.
The hinge of the present invention includes a rst plate 12 which is provided with a plurality of openings or apertures 15 whereby suitable securing elements such as screws 14 can extend through these openings 15 and into engagement with the door jamb 10. Arranged along a longitudinal edge of the plate 12 and formed integral therewith or secured thereto is a plurality of curved portions 18.
There is further provided a second plate 13 which is provided with a plurality of openings 16 whereby suitable securing elements such as screws 17 can be extended through the openings 16 and into engagement with the door 11. The plate 13 is provided with a plurality of spaced parallel flanges which each terminate in a curved section or sleeve 21, and the sleeves 21 are interposed between the curved portions 18 of the first plate 12. A pin or pintle 19 extends through the registering openings in the curved portions 18 and sleeves 21.
In order to permit adjustment of the door 11, the plate 13 is cutaway as at 22 so as to provide clearance between the curved portions- 18 and the adjacent portion of the plate 13. The flanges 20 are weakened by means 2,867,838 Patented dan, 13, 1959 of slots or recesses 23, and these slots 23 permit slight bending movement of the parts as when the door 11 is being adjusted or moved to its proper position by means of a suitable tool.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that there has been provided an adjustable hinge which will permit a door such as the door 11 to be readily moved to its proper adjusted position, without the necessityof detaching the hinge from the door and jamb. In use, the plate 12 may be secured to the jamb 10 by means of the screws 14, and the plate 13 can be secured to the door 11 by means of the screws 17. Then the pin 19 can be extended through the registering openings in the curved portions 18 and sleeves 21. In the event that the door'11 does not t properly, it is only necessary to slightly bend or move the proper portion of the plate 13 by means of a screwdriver or the like. Furthermore, the slots or recesses 23 serve to weaken the ilanges 20 slightly so that bending or twisting of the parts of the plate 13 can be more easily accomplished.
With the present invention, there will result a saving in the time and labor in properly positioning and adjusting doors and the like. A standard door butt or hinge can be provided with the cutaway portions and slots so as to weaken the hinge'sufiiciently whereby it can be bent with a screwdriver or similar tool. The screwdriver may be inserted in the central cutaway portion 22 whereby bending can `take place as a result of the slots 23 on either side thereof. Furthermore, with the present invention, it is not necessary for a carpenter or other person to unscrew the butts or plates and either chisel off more wood or lill in behind the plates nor is it necessary to remove the doors since the adjustment can be readily effected with the hinge mounted in place on the door and door jamb.
I claim:
In an adjustable hinge, a first plate of rectangular formation, a plurality of spaced parallel curved portions arranged along an outer longitudinal edge of said plate and said curved portions being provided with registering openings, a second plate of rectangular formation having a plurality of spaced parallel ilanges extending outwardly therefrom from an outer longitudinal edge thereof, and each of said anges terminating in a cylindrical sleeve, said sleeves being interposed between the curved portions of said irstplate, said sleeves having openings registering with the openings in said curved portions, a pin extending through the registering openings in said sleeves and curved portions, portions of the outer longitudinal edge of said secondv plate being cut away intermediate and outwardly of said sleeves to provide clearance between said curved portions and said second plate, there being slots in said flanges, said slots serving to weaken the flanges slightly so that bending or twisting of the parts of the second plate can be more easily accomplished, said slots being of rectangular formation and being arranged at the junction of the flanges with the second plate, said slots extending completely across the flanges from one edge to the other, said slots being arranged in aligned end-to-end relation with respect to each other.
