As is well known, to install the usual door hinges prevalent in homes and other buildings, it is necessary to rout out the edge of the door and the door jamb to provide recesses for the hinge. Also, in the usual type of binge, it is necessary for the hinge to be attached to the door by a plurality of screws. This routing of the door and door jamb, and the mounting of the hinges, is an exacting job which requires much time and effort on the part of the carpenter, and the present invention is directed towards eliminating much of this labor heretofore necessary in mounting doors and the like on hinges.
Thus, one of the objects of the present invention is to provide a unique hinge which eliminates the necessity of routing.
A further object is to provide such a hinge that eliminates the necessity of screws.
A further object is to provide such a hinge in which the hinge portions are identical in construction, thereby simplifying the manufacture thereof and eliminating other problems such as the problem of having to carry two types of hinge portions in stock.
A further object is to provide a unique hinge construction which only has a single attaching means for attaching the hinge to the door and only a single attaching means for attaching the hinge to the door jamb.
A further object is to provide a quick and easy means for attaching the hinge to the door and door jarnb.
A further object is to provide positive means for preventing the hinge from pivoting about the single fastening means.
A further object is to provide a very effective hinge construction and yet one which is inexpensive to manufacture and install.
A further object is generally to improve the design and construction of hinges.
The means by which the foregoing and other objects of the present invention are accomplished and the manner of their accomplishment will be readily understood from the following specification upon reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is an elevational view of the hinge of the present invention shown attached to a door and a door jarnb, with only a portion of the door and jamb being shown.
FIG. 2 is a sectional View of the same taken as on the line H1I of FIG. 1, and with the closed position of the door being shown in broken lines.
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged cross-sectional view taken as on the line Illlll of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 of a modified form of the present invention.
Referring now to the drawings in which the various parts are indicated by reference characters, the hinge 11 of the present invention includes two substantially identical hinge portions 13, 15, and the following description of hinge portion 13 will suffice for both.
A single attaching means is provided for hinge portion 13 and is preferably of the expandable type shown in FIGS. 1-3. Thus, the preferable attaching means is constructed as follows: A member 27 is provided which includes a tubular portion 29 and a circular fiange portion 31 integrally formed at one end of the tubular portion, with the tubular portion extending axially of the circular flange portion. Member 27 is provided with a central bore 33 extending from the outer face 35 of circular flange portion 31 towards the distal end of tubular portion 29, but stopping short of the distal end thereof as at 37, where the bore tapers inwardly towards the axis of the tubular portion. Tubular portion 29 is split. along longitudinal lines 39 from the distal end thereof to a place adjacent the end 37 of central bore 33 to provide segments id of the tubular portion. An elongated spreading member, which is preferably in the form of a pin 43, is received in central bore 33, and before the attaching means is actuated, a portion of the pin extends outwardly beyond the outer face 35, as best seen in FIG. 3.
To prepare a door, such as the door D shown in the drawings, for the attachment of hinge portion 13, it is only necessary to provide a single bore B in the edge E of the door D, which bore extends inwardly perpendicular to edge E. The center line of bore B should be spaced from the face F of door D a distance substantially equal to the distance between flange portion 23 and the center line of tubular portion 29, so that when hinge portion 13 is properly placed on door D, tubular portion 29 extends into bore B and flange 23 abuts face F adjacent edge E, as best seen in Fifi. 2. To complete the installation of hinge portion 13, with the hinge portion placed as above described, pin 43 is urged inwardly, or to the right as shown in FIG. 3, as by hitting the pin with a hammer until the pin is in an inward position, best shown in broken lines in EEG. 2 in which position the outer end of the pin is flush with the outer face 35 of circular flange portion 31. it will be understood that the movement of pin 43 to said inward position will cause segments 41 to be spread outwardly by the inner end of the pin into the dotted line'position shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, so that the hinge portion 13 is firmly attached to the door D. This unique combination of the single fastening means and means (flange 23) for preventing any pivot of the hinge portion 13 about the fastening means provides a very efficiently and firmly attached hinge portion and yet is very inexpensive and simple in construction.
In attaching hinge portion 15 to the door jarnb I, it is done in a manner similar to that heretofore described relative to the attachment of hinge portion 13 and door D, with the flange 53 of hinge portion 15 being in abutrnent with the outer face F of the door jamb adjacent the edge E of the door jamb.
Patented Aug. 3, 1965 Hinge portions 13, 1.5 are so placed relative to one another that hinge portion 13 is above hinge portion 15, with the barrel portion 17 in alignment with the barrel portion 55 of hinge portion 15. Also, hinge portions 13, are so arranged that they are turned 180 degrees relative to each other, so that when door D is closed, flanges 23, 53 will extend in opposite directions, as best seen in FIG. 2. A vertically extending hinge pin 57 extends downwardly through the bores in barrel portions 17, 55 to pivotally attach the hinge portions for pivot about a vertical axis. In addition, the usual head 59 is provided on the upper end of hinge pin 57 to limit downward movement thereof.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that no routing of the door is necesary, and the hinge portions 13, .15 are in vertical alignment when the door is closed so that the door and door jarnb are spaced apart this small distance, which is only the thickness of a single one of the hinge portions.
Generally, only two of the hinges Ill will be needed for a door, that is, one adjacent the upper part of the door and one adjacent the lower part of the door, so that in installing a door only four holes need be bored, that is, two in the door and two in the door jamb. In addition, it can be seen that the door can be quickly and easily installed without having to thread in a plurality of screws that were heretofore necessary.
A modified form of the fastening member is shown in FIG. 4, wherein it will be seen a member 61, formed of plastic, is provided in place of member 27, and the spreading member, which corresponds to pin 43 of the principal embodiment, is more in the form of a screw 65 having a pointed end 67. Just as in the preferred embodiment, member 61 is provided with a tubular portion 69 that is split adjacent the distal end thereof and is provided with a circular flange portion 71 that fits in a recess 73 in the hinge portion 75, which corresponds to hinge portion 13 of the preferred embodiment. A plurality of saw-tooth edges '77 are provided on the segments 79 of tubular portion 69 to resist movement of the member 61 outwardly when the device is expanded. Member 61 is expanded, in much the same manner as in the principal embodiment, by either driving in the screw 65 or by screwing it into the tubular member to expand the segments 79 outwardly into the dotted line position shown in FIG. 4. In addition, it will be noted that a recessed portion 81. is provided in flange portion 71 so that the head of the screw 65 can be made fiush with the outer face 83 of hinge portion 75.
Although the invention has been described in some detail by way of illustration and example for purposes of clarity or understanding, it is to be understood that it is not to be so limited since changes and modifications may be made therein which are within the full intended scope of this invention as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
l. A hinge for pivotally attaching a door member to a jamb member comprising a pair of hinge portions ad pted for butt mounting respectively to said members, means en aging said hinge portions for pivotally holding said hinge portions together; each of said hingeportions including a barrel portion, a plate portion fixedly attached to said barrel portion and extending outwardly therefrom, only a single attaching means attached to said plate portion and extending substantially perpendicularly outwardly therefrom for engagement with one of said members in a hole therein and with the weight of said door member urging pivoting movement of said plate portion about the axis of said single attaching means, said single attaching means comprising expandable means for expanding into said one of said members, and a flange attached to said plate portion and extending substantially perpendicularly outwardly therefrom in substantially the same direction as said attaching means in substantially parallel relationship to the axis of said barrel portion for unattached engagement with the face of said one of said members and extending a sufficient distance outwardly to prevent said pivoting movement of said plate portion about said attaching means.
The hinge of claim 1 in which said attaching means includes a tubular portion extending perpendicularly from said plate portion and being spit inwardly from adjacent the distal end ti ereof to provide segments of said tubular portion, said tubular portion being provided with a central bore extending to ,a place adjacent said segments, and an elongated spreading member extending into said bore and being forceable between said segments to spread said segments and attach said atttaching means to aid one of said members.
3. The hinge of claim 2 in which. said spreading membcr comprises a screw and in which said segments include saw-tooth means for gripping said one of said members when said segments are spread by said spreading member.

Claims (1)
1. A HINGE FOR PIVOTALLY ATTACHING A DOOR MEMBER TO A JAMB MEMBER COMPRISING A PAIR OF HINGE PORTIONS ADAPTED FOR BUTT MOUNTING RESPECTIVELY TO SAID MEMBERS, MEANS ENGAGING SAID HINGE PORTIONS FOR PIVOTALLY HOLDING SAID HINGE PORTIONS TOGETHER; EACH OF SAID HINGE PORTIONS INCLUDING A BARREL PORTION, A PLATE PORTION FIXEDLY ATTACHED TO SAID BARREL PORTION AND EXTENDING OUTWARDLY THEREFROM, ONLY A SINGLE ATTACHING MEANS ATTACHED TO SAID PLATE PORTION AND EXTENDING SUBSTANTIALLY PERPENDICULARLY OUTWARDLY THEREFROM FOR ENGAGEMENT WITH ONE OF SAID MEMBERS IN A HOLE THEREIN AND WITH THE WEIGHT OF SAID DOOR MEMBER URGING PIVOTING MOVEMENT OF SAID PLATE PORTION ABOUT THE AXIS OF SAID SINGLE ATTACHING MEANS, SAID SINGLE ATTACHING MEANS COMPRISING EXPANDABLE MEANS FOR EXPANDING INTO SAID ONE OF SAID MEMBERS, AND A FLANGE AT-
