1 (llaim. (Cl. 312-320) This invention relates to filing devices, filing compartments, filing cabinets, safe deposit boxes, and in general,
to containers of papers, documents, securities and the like.
In most banks, offices, safe deposit drawers or filing cabinet drawers are kept removably in cabinets from which the drawers are removed when the papers, documents or securities kept therein require handling. In view of the fact that these drawers are usually deep, and the papers kept therein usually in upright position, rest on the bottom, the handling is awkward, difiicult and inefiicient.
To overcome this difficulty, the invention at hand provides for a filing drawer in which the bottom of the drawer-together with the contents supported by samemay be raised temporarily within the drawer permitting ease of operation while the drawer is outside the cabinet and in actual use. When work is completed, the bottom is lowered into its original position and the drawer may be replaced into the cabinet.
The purpose of the invention is, therefore, to provide a filing box or filing drawer with a bottom which may be raised or lowered within the walls of said box or filing drawer; another purpose is to create a filing device which permits ease of operation and efficiency of handling of papers filed. Other purposes and novel features of the invention will become apparent from the following specification if considered together with the drawing attached hereto forming part thereof, in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a filing box embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a section of Fig.1 along line 22, with the bottom in raised position;
Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 1 along line 2-2, with the bottom in lowered position.
Fig; 4 is a section of Fig. 1 along line 4-4.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the drawmgs.
Looking at Figs. 1 to 4, the filing device consists of an outer box containing an inner double bottom 12 supporting the file separators and filed material 11 inside said outer box 10. This inner bottom 12 is preferably provided with short sides lengthwise 13 and 14 to keep the filed material and separators 11 in place, and with a full-size wall 16 in the rear having a handle 16. This inner bottom 12 rests on supporting walls 18 and 19 mounted to said double bottom by the hinges 20 and 21 which supporting walls fold under said bottom 12 in lowered position shown in Fig. 3, or support said bottom 12 within the outer box 10 as shown in Fig. 2, depending on their position. These supporting walls 18 and 19 are attached to handle 17 by means of crossbars 22 and 23 which crossbars are attached by hinging means 26 and 27 to said supporting walls 18 and 19, and by hinging means 24 and 25 to the handle 17, and are held together in the center by a rivet 28.
From this arrangement it is clear that when handle 17 is raised, the supporting walls 18 and 19 will be held fiat against the inner bottom 12, so that the entire file material 11 will be within the confines of the outer box 10. However, by lifting the rear handle 16' and pressing down on the front handle 17, the inner bottom 12 will be raised and will remain in its raised position inside of the outer box 10 supported by supporting walls 18 and 19, as long as such raised position is desired for easier access to the contents. When work is completed, the contents 11 can be again lowered within the confines of the outer box 10 by pulling up on handle 17, thereby folding supporting walls 18 and 19 under the inner bottom 12.
Of course, other changes in arrangement and parts may be made, other supporting and arresting means substituted as equivalents for the means shown in the attached drawings which serve to illustrate but not to limit the invention as defined by the following claim:
I claim as my invention:
A file drawer or the like, having in combination a movable bottom supporting contents of said drawer,
said movable bottom resting in raised position below the top of said drawer on two flat supporting walls being provided with hinges permitting the folding of said supporting walls under said movable bottom, said folding being effected by bars hinged to said supporting walls extending above said movable bottom and hinged to each other and to a handle operating the raising and lowering of said movable bottom.
