CHARM FOR WATCH-cHAlNs.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,608, dated October 16, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES R. HANDY, of Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and y State of Massachusetts, have invented a new' and useful Improvement in Charms; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.

This invention has reference to an improvement in ornaments worn on Watch or other chains, usually called charms; and it consists in the'peculiar and novel construction of the same, as will be more fully set forth hereinater.

Figure 1 is a view of my improved charm, showing the face arranged to form a calendar. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, show. ing the manner of securing and holding the date plate of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of my improved charm, and Fig. 4 is aview ofthe rim on which the months are indicated.

In the drawings, a is a ring, to which the face-ring b is secured. This ring b has an aperture at the upper edge, through which the name oi' the month can be read. The rest of the ring is divided into thirty-one spaces, having the numerals from l to 31 marked in the same.

c is the day-ring, on which the days are indicated. It is divided into spaces corresponding with the spaces on the ring b. The dayring c forms part of the sleeve d, the inner edge of which is formed into the prongs or lips d d', which are bent lover int-o the recesses d d in the ratchet-wheel e. Between the face-ring b and the ratchet-wheel e the ring f, having the names of the months marked on the same, and provided with amilled edge, is placed, and the whole is secured together by mea-ns of the sleeve d. An aperture, g, at the top of the case allows of the rotation of the iiiontli-ringf.v The spring h enters the ratchets of thewheel e, and holds the same until suhicient force is used to turn the day-ring c, the sleeve d, and ratchet-wheel e,

i for the purpose of setting the initials indieating the days with the numbers, so as to correspond with the month.

z' is the back, which may be firmly secured by solder or otherwise. It may be hinged, like the cover of a watch-case, or secured by a snap-edge, like the bezel of a watch. This cover or back may be solid or be provided with a glass.

k is a ring by which the charm is suspended.

The center l may have a jewel, stone, or other ornament to suit the taste of the wearer; or a compass may be placed in the center.

The whole formsa convenient and desirable charm. The serrated edge of the ring c forms an agreeable contrast on the face, and facilitates the turning of the same with sulicient force to raise the spring la, out-of the concaved ratchet, so that the day-plate c can be readily adjusted to the dates in the month when required. All the parts can be readily formed in proper dies, and a neat, substantial, and

cheap charm produced.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with the ring a. and face ring b, of the day-ring c, the ratchet- Wheel e, spring h, and platef, secured together by the sleeve d, as described.

2. A charm provided with a ring graduated and marked with numerals corresponding to the number of days in aI month, secured to the case, a ring graduated and markedwith letters indicating the days, a plate or ring having the months marked on the same, a ratchetwheel and spring by which the same is held against rotation, and a sleeve constructed to secure the parts together and allow the same to be rotated, as described.

3. The combination, with the ring b, the ring c, sleeve d, ,ratchet e, plate or ring f, and

lspring 7i, of the central ornament, Z, and back e', constructed to form a charm, as described.

4. The combination, with the ring b, the plate f, the ratchet e, spring h, and sleeve d, of the ring @,provided with the serrated edge constructed to turn the same, as described.
