'ro ALL WnoM rr MAY coNoERN; il
vBe it known that I, J. K. SEEM, 0` Canton, in theicounty of Bradford, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clock-Calendars; and I do hereby declare that the Vfollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
c. This invention relates to a new and improved arrangement for showing the month, the day ofthe month, and the day of the week, on a clock-face; and it consists in an arrangement of wheels which are revolved by the movement of the clock, whereby a perpetual calendar is produced, and which is` read on the face of the clock, as I. will proceed to describe.
Figure 1 represents the back side of' the face ofthe clock, showing wheels which are attached to it, by the 'revolution of which the letters and figures of the months and days are exhibited through apertures in the face.
Figure 2 shows tho clock-face with the apertures andrnames oi' the month, day of the month, and day of the week.
Figure 3 is a cross-section of iig. l, through the line :u
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The names ofthe months are placed or printed on two disk-wheels, which lie one over -the other. Through the outer disk there is a hole corresponding in size and form with that through the clock-face. Each wheel contains a portion ot' the name of the mont-li, as neither one could contain thc'wholc unless greatly enlarged. These disk-wheelsare set by hand at the bottom ot' the face, at a, so that the name of the month is shown through the clock-face, as represented. The outer disk is held in place bythe stop at e. rlhese disk-wheels are at A, and are seen in dotted lines in iig. 2. B is a wheel, which is placed on the clock-spndle, and which revolves with the hourehand. e e are twopins in this wheel, which engage with the cogs or lingers on the day-of-theweek wheel C. There are seven of these cogs, one for each day of the week, and they engage with the eogs of the day-ofthe-month wheel D, and turn it, one cog for every day. The wheel D has the nine digits and the 0 upon it. Between this wheel and the clock there is a plate, seen in dotted lines, at d, through the drawing, iig. 2, having the figures 1 2, and 3 upon it. The plate d is also provided upon its inner side with four projections, b', near its centre, as shown in fig. 1, and is turned one figure every ten days by a projection, a', upon one side of the wheel D, engaging with the projections b upon the plate d. .The wheel D has ten cogs upon it, so that any number of figures from 1 to 31 can he shown by the wheel und the plate, as the number 15-is shown in the drawing. When the wheel D shall have made one revolution, the projection a will engage with one of the projections'b upon the plate d, and the latter will bc moved so Aas to present the figure 2 through the opening in the face of the dial. 'lhe figure 2 will Athen be opposite thenaught (0) on the wheel 'D, and the day-,of the month indicated will be 20. The plate d is held in place by spring,f, seen in g, 1,
g is a spring-which holds the wheel C in place', working upon the serrated edge of a disk, J, which is fast to the wheel. h is another spring, Vwhich bears against the wheel D. The wheel C revolves on a pivot, which is attached to the clock-face. The pivot of D is attached to an arm,'which raises its centre from the face', and out of the way of the plate al, which-plate is revolved within the rim of the wheel, as secu in the drawing. j are apertures ythrough the 'face of the clock, through which the wheels G and D may be moved by hand when desired. v
By this method ot' construction and arrangement, I :un enabled to add the calendar, as herein shown and described, to old clocks, by merely adding a new face, and it is more particularly for this purpose that the improvement is designed. i
l What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
v The construction and arrangement' of the wheels B C D, and the plate' cl, substantially as described for the purposes set forth.
J. K. SEEM.
