N. PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WABHKNGTON. D (I4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY O. FOOTE, OF FREDERIOKTOWN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND WILLIAM C.
KILGORE, OF OHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
COMBINED WATCH-KEY AND CALENDAR.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 26,817, dated January 10, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. Foorn, of Fredericktown, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented a new article of manufacture being a Combined Shield and Calendar; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this description, in which- Figure l represents a front view of my combined shield and calendar, Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts in both gures.
My invention consists in combining with a shield, in a novel manner an adjustable circular plate on which are inscribed the days of the months, and days of the week, and on the shield the days of the month, forming when suitably combined an almanac which may be adjusted so as to readily indicate the day of the week or month, and also an ornamental pendant which being made of gold or other metal may be hung on the watch chain or on a ribbon by a split ring or other suitablefastening which will serve also to keep the dial plate in its place as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a shield which may be made of gold, silver or any other desirable metal, and elaborately chased or ornamented to suit the fancy, and upon which is engraved a line of figures l, 8, 15, 22, 29. This shield is prolonged in a circular plate B which may be of any size proportionable with that of the shield. C, is a similar circular plate which has twelve perforations each corresponding with the twelve calendar months of the year. Each of these perforations is then spaced o with radial lines diverging from a common center and terminating at the circumference of said plate. Between these lines are engraved the months of the year with the number of days in each month, and between every two lines, and near the edge of the plate are engraved each day of the week. This plate or disk is then laid upon the circular plate B and the two riveted together at their centers so that the plate C may be readily rotated in adjusting it for any day of the month.
The back plate B is furnished with twelve perforations corresponding to those in the plate O through which is passed a split ring D for fixing the two plates in position when once properly set, these holes are made sulii ciently close to the edges of the plates to permit the ring D to be readily attached and detached.
Now in setting the dial plate C, it is only necessary to bring the irst day of the week, on which any month commences over t-he numerals l, S, 15, 22, 29 on the shield and any day in the month may be read olf fromV the face of the shield which indicates every seventh day.
This little calendar may be hung by the ring D, to the watch chain or to a ribbon, to a bunch of keys or kept in the pocket and serves not only as an ornament but as a very useful almanac which by adjusting every month will indicate immediately any day in the month.
I do not claim a calendar disk, nor do I claim a shield separately considered; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combined calendar and shield as a new article of manufacture, the same consisting of a shield, circular plates and split ring, as herein described.
HENRY C. FOOTE. Witnesses W. C. WALKINS, IDA ENDEN.
