2 Claims. (Cl. 72-19) Our invention relates to improvements in fasteners for the front slabs of crypts and is designed as an improvement over the subject matter of our U. S. Patent No. 2,618,145, dated November 18, 1952.
The primary object of our instant invention is to provide a fastener for securing to the crypt wall upper and lower pairs of marble closure slabs by releasable means which is invisible from the front of the crypt yet is readily accessible from the front of the crypt for releasing the slabs.
Still another object is to simplify the construction and arrangement of our aforesaid patent for economy of manufacture and to provide a fastener which cannot work loose.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a fragmentary view in front elevation partly broken away and shown in section of our improved fastener applied to a crypt;
Figure 2 is an enlarged exploded view in perspective of a hanger member of the fastener anchoring means for a base and parts carried by the base;
Figure 3 is an enlarged exploded view in side elevation of one of a pair of studs of the fasteners;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view in vertical section taken on the line 44 of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in horizontal section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, our improved fastener is designated therein as a unit by the numeral 1 and as in our aforesaid patent is designed to be anchored to the front wall 2 of the crypt at the intersection of vertical and horizontal walls 3, 4 to fasten together contiguous corners of upper and lower pairs of marble closure slabs, or fronts, 6 for closing casket compartments, not shown.
The fastener 1 is similar to that of our aforesaid patent in that it comprises an L-shaped base 7 having a vertical hanger portion 8 for attachment to the crypt wall 2, and a forwardly projecting, relatively wider horizontal ledge 9 of rectangular shape and adapted to fit between the contiguous comers of an upper and alower pair of closure slabs 6. However, in accordance with our instant invention, the ledge 9 extends forwardly from portion 8 for centering of said ledge 9 relative to the contiguous corners of the slabs '6.
The fastener 1 is fastened to the front wall 2 as in our aforesaid patent for vertical adjustment of the base 1 on said wall by means of a pair of upper and lower horizontal sleeves 18, 19 embedded in said wall 2 and cross connected by a vertical transverse rod arm 20 having a pair of upper and lower bolts 15, 16 threaded into the sleeves 18, 19 and extending through a vertical slot 17 in the portion 8 and front and rear nuts 25, 26, threaded on said bolts 15, 16 at opposite sides of said portion 8, the rear nuts 26 fitting and vertically slidable in a rear vertical guide groove 27 in said portion 8.
A pair of horizontal V- shaped springs 35, 36 are provided on the track 13 to engage and urge the contiguous corners of the upper and lower pairs of slabs 6 as in our aforesaid patent.
- In accordance with our present invention the contiguous corners of the slabs 6 are provided with slots, there being a pair of longitudinal bottom slots 28 in the lower edges of the corners of the upper pairopening downwardly and onto confronting vertical edges of said upper pair, and a similar pair of longitudinal 'slots 30 in the top edges of the bottom pair 6 opening upwardly and at the confronting vertical edges of said lower pair.
A pair of vertical studs 42 are provided in the ledge 9 for sliding laterally in a longitudinal central slot 44 in said ledge. The studs 42 are formed with heads 45 below the'ledge 9 slidably fitting in the slots 30 of the lower pair of slabs 6, and with cap nuts 46 slidably fitting in the slots 28 of the upper pair of slabs 6. As will be seen, the studs by virtue of the heads 45 and cap nuts 46 are provided with enlarged upper and lower ends laterally slidable in the slots 28, 30 and into and out of said slots at the confronting vertical edges of the pairs of sl-abs 6.
As shown in Figure 1 in full lines, each stud 42 is slid into the slots 28, 30 of one of the upper and lower slabs 6, whereas the other stud 42 is slid into the slots 28, 30 of the other pair and the slabs 6 are thus fastened to the ledge 9. However, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, either stud 42 maybe slid out of the slots 28, 30 of one upper and lower slab 6 into the slots 28, 30 of the other upper and lower slab whereby to release the upper and lower slab 6 of either pair for removal and replacement. The studs 42 may be easily slid as desired by inserting a thin flat bar, not shown, between the ledge 9 and the slabs 6 of the upper and lower pairs and pushing with the bar against the studs. The cap nuts 46 do not clamp the studs 42 to the ledge 9 so that said studs are freely slid-able in the slot 44 and, as will be understood, the heads 45 and cap nuts 46 slide freely in the slots 28, 30.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is 'as'follows:
1. In a crypt having a wall, upper and lower pairs of closure slabs for the crypt having contiguous corners, confronting horizontal edges separating the pairs and confronting vertical edges in each pair, said slabs having slots therein at said corners opening onto said horizontal and vertical edges, a hanger member fixed to said wall behind said slabs, a horizontal ledge on said member interposed between the horizontal edges of the pairs of slabs, said ledge having an elongated uninterrupted aperture therein and a pair of studs on said ledge each ex- ,Patented Sept. so, 1958;
3 tending into the slots of an upper and lower pair of the slabs to fasten the slabs in place, either of said studs being slidable in said aperture on said ledge out of the slots into which it extends and into the slots of the other upper and lower pair of slabs to unfasten either pair of upper and lower slabs selectively.
2. The combination of claim 1, said studs each ha ing enlarged ends above and below said ledge, one of which is detachable and replaceable for inserting the studs in the slot.
