PICTURE HANGER PLATE Filed March 4, 1930 Patented Feb. 24, 1931 v UNITED STAR -514% FATENT QFFICE WALTER HERMAN SIMON, OF BALLARDVALE, MASSACHUSETTS PICTURE-HANGER PLATE Application filed March 4, 1930. Serial No. 433,161.
My invention is an improvement in sup- Figs. 4 and 5 are front and edge views porting devices of that particular class comthereof respectively, and monly known as picture hangers and usually Fig. 6 is a front view showing a modificain the form of a plate secured to the back of tion. 5 the picture or mirror frame near the opposite In carrying out my invention the picture 50 edges thereof to engage nails or hooks secured hanger for attachment to the frame of the in the wall for suspending the picture or picture comprises a plate 10, preferably recmirror therefrom. tangular in shape provided near its upper In the operation of hanging a picture with end with an elongated slot 11 and in the lowthe ordinary plates used for this purpose it er portion thereof with a plurality of vertiv is somewhat dificult to properly locate the cal slots 12 and 13, the first mentioned slot plates on the picture frame and nails or hooks receiving the nail or hook from which the on the wall so that the picture will be hung picture is suspended and the last mentioned straight or perpendicular, and it is the princislots providing the means for securing the pal object of my invention therefore to proplate to the picture frame so that adjust- 60 vide a picture hanger or plate for attachments may be made in arranging the picment to the picture frame that will permit ture on the wall for hanging it straight or of adjustments being made after the nails perpendicular. Furthermore, by having the nail or hook engaging slot at the upper end of the plate horizontal it provides a certain amount of leeway in spacing the nails or hooks on the wall with respect to the spacing of the plates on the back of the picture frame, and of course when plates having a single adjusting slot are used they may be tilted with respect to the picture frame to the right or left for engagement with the nails, or hooks when the picture is hung temporarily on the wall in arranging-the same.
It will be understood that a straight plate having the upper horizontal slot and lower vertical slots for adjustment of the picture-- in hanging the same from a nail or hook may he used in some instances or when it is intended that the platehe attached so that the upper end thereof will. projectabove the picture frame for permitting a nail to be driven into the wall from above the upper edge of the frame, but in. order that the plates and supportingnails or hooks may be located below the upper edge of the picture frame so as to be out of sight when the picture is hung, and more especially for use of the plate in connection with a hook of the type known as the Moore picture hook 17 the said plate is shaped as shown in the drawings, that is to say the upper and lower portions are offset or out,
of vertical. line with each other by bending the upper portion of the plate slightly below the horizontah slot 11 outward at 18, and then upward, and sothat the said plate may be more easily engaged, with the hook the up.- per end 19 is. curved outwardly, the curve beginning at the upper end of the slot 11. When the plate shaped as described is attached tothe frame of the picture by screws passing through. the slot and screw; holes in the lower portionof said. plate the upper portion thereof will be spaced from: the picture frame to accommodate the bill of the hook, and as the curve of the upper end of theplate begins at the opening or slot receiving the bill of thehook it facilitates the engagement in hanging the picture. i
The utility of my improved form of picture hanger or plate will be obviousfrom the showing in the accompanying drawings, for
it not only provides for readily and conveniently adjusting the position of the picture on the mu, ashereinbefore set forth, but. also permits of. the picture being hung flat against the wall as well as locates the suspending means out of sight, and although the picture hangingplate maybe and preferably is usable in connection with. a Moore picture hanger itimay be employed in hanging a picture from any other type of hook,
ALTER HERMAN SIMON.
