INVENTOR r J; AT ORNEY WITNESSES .Z k /M UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
THOMAS REES PRICE, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,362, dated September 18, 1883.
Application filed April 9, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS R. PRICE, a resident of the city of Knoxville, county of Knox, and State of Tennessee, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
My invention consists in a table-top having rails provided with open spaces between the ends thereof, the said ends braced by cornerplates secured to the lower edges of same, and the under side of the table-top provided, between the aforesaid ends of the rails, with mortises adapted to receive the tenoned ends of detachable legs that are secured in position by means of screwsand clamps, as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an extension-table, the fslides of which will form the subject-matter of afuture application, in this figure a portion of the table-top is broken away in order to show the manner in which the table-legs are secured in position, and Fig. 2 is a detail showing aplan of one corner of a table with a leg secured thereto by my improved plan.
The letter A designates the table-top, the outer corners of which are provided on the under side with holes or sockets b, to receive the tenons formed on the upper ends of' the legs 0, that are made to fit snugly in spaces left between the end rails, D, and side rails, E, and in recesses made in plates F, which are secured to the under sides of the aforesaid rails for the purpose of stiffening the corners Me for transportation.
of the table, as well as for forming a seat or rest for a clamp, G, which serves, through the medium of a screw, h, to securely lock the leg in position, the leg being readily detached by removing this screw and clamp and by pulling it out of the socket in the bottom of the table-top.
From the above it will be perceived that unless the screws are entirely removed from the legs of the table the said legs can have no endwise movement, and hence their tenons will remain buried in the mortises until the fastenings are detached, when the legs can be withdrawn and placed in the body of the ta- It will also be seen that the ends of the rails are beveled inwardly, and the space between each is about equal to the diameter of the upper part of the table leg, so that the latter shall fill the space and thus form a neat finish without the necessity of careful fitting.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In combination with a table-top provided with sockets b, rails D E, and plates F, the legs 0, having tenons, as and for the purpose described, and clamps, substantially as described, for operating against the plates F, to prevent endwise movement of the legs, sub stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS REES PRICE. Witnesses:
