W. A. NICHOLS.
WATCH PROTECTOR.
No. 285,154. Patented Sept. 18, 1883.
Me we@ ITE STATES PATENTy EEIcEe WATCH-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part Vof Letters Patent No. 285,154, dated September 18, 1883.
` Application filed March 3, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. NIcHoLs, of the city of, Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Watch-Protectors, of which the'following is a specification.
My invention has reference to devices adapted to be attached to wearing-apparel, and to whicharticles, asa watch, may be readily attached and disconnected, the same acting as a guard against being robbed; and my invention consists in a plate to which is pivoteda hook or its equivalent, andthe whole combined with a catch or lock, as more fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the'accompanying drawings, which form part thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide suitable means adapted t'o be secured to the inside of a watch-pocket or other part of the garment, and to which a watch or other article can readily be attached and detached by the wearer, but would prevent the `same being stolen.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of one form of my improved watch-pro tector. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation ofsame online x w. Fig. 3 is a plan of same with the top case and hinged hook removed. Fig. 4
is a perspective view of the case inverted.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the case-sheet before being bent into shape. Fig. 6 shows the protector attached to the pocket, and Fig. 7 shows a modification of this invention.
A is the case, and is preferably made of stamped sheet metal, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5,'and is provided with a slot, G, an aperture, C, two lugs, D D, bent up as shown, and clampingpieces E. This case is placed over a back plate, B, provided with notches F, over which the clamping-pieces E are bent, and incloses a spring-bolt, H, and spring I, the said bolt being provided with a beveled catch, h, a stop, h', and an extending handle or push-piece, H', which passes through the slot C, and is guided thereby. Ifdesired, a stopfleg, h2, may be used to prevent too great compression of spring I. The spring I always tends to keep the shoulder or stop h against theY end of case A in the position shown in Fig. 3.
The hool-catch J is made long, is pivoted at one end to the lugs D, and provided on the other end with a bent end, K, provided on its point with a notch, k, and beveled edge K. The end K enters .the hole C in case A, and is caught by the catch-shoulder h of bolt H.
f, The said safety attachment may be sewed or otherwise secured to the garment.
The simplest method of securing it in place would be as shown in Fig. 6, in which case the pieces E pass through the garment and clamp it also with the back B. within a pocket, L, and wit-h a watch secured thereon, the ring of the watch encircling the part K of the hook J. The watch-ring is slipped on the hook, and the latter pressed in and caught by the spring-bolt, the ring settling upon the part K of the hook, thus occupying no more room than usual. To take the watch out of the pocket it is necessary first to press in the bolt H, when the hook J may be drawn out or forced out by spring J, which may be formed integral with spring I. The point of part K may pass through a hole, G, in back plate, B, to enable the thickness of the device to be reduced to a minimum.
vIn place of forming the bolt H to push in, it I may be pivoted to the case and back, as shown in Fig. 7, and this pivoted bolt may project from the end, top, or bottoni.
I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown, as it may be modified in various ways without departing from my invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a case, A B, pivoted hook J, and a spring-bolt, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of case A, having slot C', holeC, and lugs D, back B, pivoted hook J, spring-bolt H, and spring I, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of case A, having slot G, hole C, and lugs D, back B, pivoted hook It is here shown as placedl J, haiving` bent end K, provided with notch k, back B, having` notches F, pivoted hook J, 1o spring-holt H, andlspring I, substantially its spring-bolt II, and spring` I, substantially as and for the purpose specified. and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination of ease A, having slot In testimony of which invention I hereunto 5 C, hole C, and lugs D, back B, pivoted hook set my hand.
J, spring J spring-bolt H, and spring I, subl VILLIAM A. NICHOLS. sta-ntially as and for the purpose specified. Vtnesses:
5. The combination of case A, having slot R. M. HUNTER, C', hole C, clamping-pieces E, and lugs D, IsAIAH MATLAo/K.
