JEROME PATTERSON, OF sHARoN, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE-FOR LOWERING con-ms.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,064, dated September 18, 1883. Application filed June 1,1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it inlay concern B lBe it known that I, J EnoME PATTERSON, of Sharon, county of Mercer, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lugs for Coffin-Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and ex.- act description, that will enable others to understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. i
This inventionrelates to improvements in connection with Letters Patent No. 204,366,
granted to me the 28th day of May, 1878. The nature of my invention will more fully appear from the subjoined description and claims, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side 'elevation of a coffin embodying my improved features. Fig. 2 shows the manner of holding and lowering the cover to the outside case. of a lug, showing one end of a coffin-handle and the manner of connecting the same with the lug. Fig. 4 is a front or face View of the lug. Fig. 5 shows the manner of constructing the grave-rods in sections.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a coffin; B, handles; 0, lugs, and D the graverods. The inner or attaching surface of the lug O is flat, while the opposite side is provided with the central outward projecting post, a, and the eye or ring I). The post or projection forming an integral part of the lug is recessed for the reception of the piv0t-pintle a, attached to the arm b of the handle. a a, are perforations in the lug for the insertion of the attaching-screws. Two of these lugs are used with each handle, and are adapted to be used in connection with any style or design of lifting-handles. By means of the eye bin each lug, the hook ends of the rods D are conveniently attached for the purpose of lowering the coffin into the grave, after which they are as conveniently disengaged from the same. If the grave-rods have not been pro vided, a cord may be rove through the eyesin Fig. 3 is a sectional view.
| dependently for the purpose of lowering the same is dispensed with.
The grave-rods shown in the present appli cation differ somewhat in construction from similar devices, as set forth in the patent above referred to. In that patent the rods are provided with open handles, and composed of a single length instead of in sections. I11 the present case the series of handles E are solid and internally threaded for the engage-- ment of the correspondingly-threaded end of the joining-section of the handle, as shown in. Fig. 5 of the drawings. This arrangement readily permits of the rods being shortened or lengthened, and also folded in a more compact space, either for storage or transportation. The last section or upper ends of the rods are provided with the open guards (l,
which form a convenient hand-grasp but are more especially intended, by using the rods end for end or in a reversed position,-to engage with the cleats 01 d attached to the cover F, for the purpose of lowering the same into the grave. The cover F closes the rough box inclosing the coffin. A portion of the under side of the cleats d d is cut away, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, forming a recess for the engagement of the guard on the upper ends of the rods.
The series of handles on the rods D afford 8 5 means for. safely changing the position of the hands while the coffin is being lowered, thereby avoiding the liability and danger of the rods slipping through the hands.
I am aware that handles have been provided with eyes, through which a lifting device may be inserted, and to that I make no claim; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a grave rod or rods constructed in sections, and having a hook, and a body having an eye or other device for said hook to catch upon, for the purpose set 100 forth- 2. The combination, with a grave rod or rods constructed in sections, of the lug a, provided with the eye or ring I) for the engagement of the hook end of said rods, substan- I05 tially as and for the purpose described.
JEROME PATTERSON.
