To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, BRADLEY R Avnninn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greens Farms, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers, of which the following is a specifica- This invention relates to a hay and grain carrier and the primary object of the invention is to provide a carrier in the form of a container having its side walls hingedly mounted to provide swinging closures adapted to be locked and unlocked so that either one or both of the'side closures may be held in closed position or permitted to swing to open position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a carrier adapted to be suspended from a trolley or conveyor trap and having locking elements comprising a-plurality of levers mounted upon its end Walls and adapted to be manually operated for looking or unlocking the swinging closures for the container.
As a further object of theinvention the locking elements at the ends of the container are connected together so that a cooperation of two end locking elements may be obtained by operating one of the elements for unlocking the one of the swinging sides at both ends thereof. 7 I
A further object of this invention is the provision of a hay and'grain carrier which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;'

Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the substantially rectangular container 1 is provided and has the fixed'end walls 2 and 3. Thesides 4: and 5 of the container are hingedly connected to the longitudinal edges of the bottom 6 by the hinges 7 and are permitted to swing outwardly thereby providing drop sides whereby both sides of the container may be opened for permitting the insertion or the extraction of hay, grain or other material.
The sides d and 5 are preferably constructed from metal and have their end edges bent outwardly to provide the vertical flanges 8. Attached to the vertical flanges 8 at each end of each side is a locking pin 9 adapted to be received, whenthe side is in closed position, by the pivoted latch 10 which has one end pivotally mounted upon the. wall of the container and its opposite end provided with a notch for receiving the pin 9. Fourof these latches 10 are provided, two being mounted on each end of the container andeach latch is operated by a hand lever 11 having a hand grip formed at one. end and its opposite end pivotally connected to a link 12' which is also connected to the latch 10. The operating lever 11 is pivotally mounted on the end of a rod 13 which extends the full length of the container and has its ends protruding through theend of the walls 2 and 3so that the operating levers at each endof the container may be mounted upon the ends of the rod. This construction permits both of the latches for one of the swinging sides to be operated simultaneously by operating one of the levers 11.
H Guard members 1% are fastened to the end walls and are adapted to embrace each latch '10 as clearly shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing and, it will be observed, that the space between the guard members and the side of each end wall is sutficient to permit the latch lOto freely swing within the guard members. Interposed between the upper edge of each latch 10 and the upper interior'wall of r the guard member is a compression spring 15 adapted to hold the latch 10in depressed position so that it normally tends to engage the pin 9 when the swinging sides are in closed position.
A hanger 16 is attached to each end Wall 2 and 3 at the center thereof and has an opening in its end for receiving a cable or chain whereby the carrier may be suspended from any suitable suspending means.
In operation, the device will be filled with hay or grain. By grasping the hand grip on one of the levers 11 the same may be swung upon the pivot or rod 13 thereby lifting the latch 10 out of engagement with the pin 9 and, since the rod 13 extends entirely through the container the latches at both ends will be operated thus releasing one of the sides of the container and permitting the same to swing outwardly and downwardly. In order that the contents may be drawn over the edge of the swinging sides when the same are open, the end of the sides are provided with shields 18 formed of segmental portions adapted to swing into the container, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. l'of the drawing, and which prevent the contents of the container from being dispensed over the ends of the sides when the same are swung to open position. The operating rods 13 are embraced by cylindrical pipes 17 which, in addition to their function of inclosing the rods, also serve to brace the end walls 2 and 3 at the top thereof.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable hay and grain carrier has been provided, the details of which body the preferred form. I desire it to e understood however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
I claim:
1. A carrier comprising a container having its sides hingedly mounted to swing outwardly from the container, segmental shields carried by the sides and normally disposed within the container, a rod extending longitudinally through the container above the marginal edges of the said shields, a cylindrical pipe embracing the said rod and having its ends secured to the end walls, and operating means mounted upon each end of each rod for cooperating with the said hingedly mounted sides whereby the same may be swung to open position.
2. A carrier comprising a container having its sides hingedly mounted to swing outwardly from the container, segmental shields 7 carried by the sides and normally disposed within the container, a rod extending longitudinally through the container above the marginal edges of the said shields, a cylin- 'drical pipe embracing the said rod and having its ends secured to the end walls, operating means mounted upon each end of each rod for cooperating with the said hingedly mounted sides whereby the same may be swung to open position, and means for holding the said hingedly mounted sides in locked position.
3. A carrier comprising a container, the said container having its sides hingedly mounted to swing outwardly, a pair of oppositely extending latches mounted upon each side of each end of the container, operating levers having their ends connected to the said latches, and means extending through the said container adjacent each longitudinal side thereof and associated with each pair of said levers whereby the latches at each end of the said container may be simultaneously operated. l 1

A carrier comprlsing a container having its sides hlngedly mounted to swing outwardly from the container a rod extending longitudinally through the container and protruding beyond each end wall thereof, a cylindrical pipe embracing the said rod and having its end secured to each end wall, and operating means mounted u 3011 each end of each rod for cooperating wit the said swinging sides for permitting the same to be swung to open or for holding the same in locked position.
5. A carrier comprising a container having its sides hingedly mounted to permit the sides to swing outwardly from the container, segmental shields carried by the sides and normally disposed within the "container, latches pivotally mounted and adapted to cooperate with the swinging sides for holding the same in closed position, operating levers for unlocking the said latches, a pairv of cylindrical pipe elements mounted within the container and fixed in the end walls thereof, and means connecting the said operating levers through the said cylindrical pipe elements for permitting two of the latches for one of the said swinging sides to be simultaneously operated with the operation of one of the said levers.
