LINUS B. COOLEY, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,015, dated September 18, 1883. Application filed November 18, 1882. (No model.)` 'l To all whom it may concern/ Be it known that I, LINUs B. CooLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification- Figure l beinga side View of my improved pump; Fig. 2, a top view with the cover removed; Fig. 3, a vertical section in the line .fr x, Fig. 1.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the iigures.
My improvements have reference to that class of VVlift-pumps in which the power is given by a crank operated by a handle.
A is the body ofthe pump, cylindrical in form and of suitable size, which is held in position over the well or cistern by adjustingbolts a a a a, by means of which it can be placed in any position desired. This bodyA is composed of an outer cylindrical tube, B into which iits an inner cylindrical tube, .C, of smaller diameter. The inner tube, C, in which the piston works, does not reach as high as the outer tube, B. In the upper part of the tube B, above the tube C, ts a movable cylindrical housing-cap, D. The housing-cap ris provided with a flange, b, to limit the depth to which it reaches in the tube B. In thehousing-cap D is mounted the crank E, and the whole pump is protected by the hinged cover G. The housing-cap D fits somewhat loosely in the tubev B, so that it may be ready ily moved into any desired position to suit the The tube B is providf` turning of the handle. ed with one or more slits, c, andv around it, near the top, is placed a band, H, passing nearly around it, and having parallel projecting parts d d, through which passes a bolt, e. By
] in the tube C, and is connected with the'crank E by means of rthe double connecting-rod L. To the center of the piston is rigidly attached a vertical rod, M. .Between the two parts of the connecting-rod L is located a bar, O. This bar is of a length nearly equal to the inner diameter of the outer tube, B, and its ends rest in the space between the tube C and the movable housing-cap D. This bar at its two ends is enlarged and the ends cut circular, to be adapted to the circular shape of the tube C, which enlargements give broader bearings and firmer support to the ends, prevent lateral displacement, and render any fastening unnecessary. In the center of the bar O is a hole, f, through which the free end of the vertical rod M passes. The rod is of sufficient length, so that there is no danger of its ever slipping out of the hole f. The vertical rod M, passing through the guide-bar O, is compelled thereby to retain its vertical position at every point when the crank is operated, and the piston I, being rigidly connected at right angles to the rod M, also of necessity retains a constant horizontal position in the tube C, and thus the rocking ofthe piston, which would wear the packing and would render the action of the check-valve P is situated al vent-valve, Q, by which the water may be permitted to run down andfreezing prevented. The vent-valve Q being opened and the water in the p'ipe below the check-valve l? having run downa few turns of the handle of the crank will remove all the water between the piston-valve and the check-valve by raising the check-valve valve and the check-valve to run down.
