UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK D. HINES, OF SUMMIT STATION, OHIO.
PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 337,402, dated March 9.1886.
Application led December 2, 1885. Serial No. 184.528. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK D. HINEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Summit Station, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in double-cylinder pumps; and the objects of my improvements are to produce a double-cylinder pump adapted for use in pumping the water either from the top or bottom of a well, or to draw water from both points. I accomplish these objects in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of my improved pump, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A represents the stock or main body of the pump, having a barrel, b, and a barrel, c. The barrel b is of the usual length, and may be continued to the required length, which is preferably near the bottom of the well, by joining to that portion of the stock, in the usual manner, a second stock. The barrel c extends only a short distance below the platform of the well, and has its lower end closed. At a short distance below the top of the pump these two barrels b c are made to communicate by means of a transverse hole or cut eX- tending through the partition dividing the barrels. The barrels are each provided with the usual plunge-rod, having a sucker and valve on the lower end thereof.
The pump-handle g is made to project outwardly from above the top of the pump, and
is pivoted or hinged to a bolt, h, made to eX-' tend between two upwardly-projecting plates, m, secured to the front and rear sides of the stock. The handle g is provided at points immediately above the barrels b c with vertical slots, within which are pivoted the upper ends of metal hinging-plates 7c by means of short transverse bolts 'L' i', the lower ends of said plates 7c being hinged or pivoted to the upper ends of the plunge-rods d d.
. Projecting outwardly through the side of the stock from a point near the bottom of the cylinder or barrel c and opening therein is a Short tube, p, having on its inner end a valve,
0, of any well-known form, and having fitted over its outer projecting end the upper end of a lleXible pipe, c. This pipe c, which may be of any desired length, extends downward, and has secured to its lower end, by means of a ring and staple, a block or suitable float, f.
A spout, n', of the usual form, is made to project outwardly from the front side of the pump at a point opposite the center of the transverse eut n, with which it connects.
The pump being constructed as above described, the operation of the handle g in the usual manner will cause the plunge-rods to rise and fall alternately, the rod d operating to draw the water in the usual manner from near the bottom of the well, the rod d operating to draw only the surface water, the flexible pipe e, through which the surfacewater passes to the cylinder 0r barrel c, being kept from sinking but slightly below the surface of the water by means of the iioat f.
It is a well-known fact that at times the surface-water in a well becomes stagnant and unfit for use. This stagnant surface-water may be readily pumped oli' without disturbing the deeper water by withdrawing the bolt z', thus uncoupling the rod d from the handle, and allowing the rod d to be operated alone. The water drawn into either cylinder is allowed to escape through the cut n and out through a common spout, n.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isd
A double-cylinder pump having one barrel upon a higher level than the other, in combination with a flexible pipe connecting with the lower end of the shorter pump-barrel,and a oat secured to the lower end of said flexible pipe, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
