STOVE-PIPE CLEANER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,897, dated September 11, 1883,

Application filed March 21, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, GABRIEL RASGOR- sunk and Joan RASGORSHEK, of Ilattsmouth, in the county of Cass, and in the State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Pipe Cleaners; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved device arranged for introduction into a pipe or flue. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same when expanded to its full size. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of a stove-pipe,

metal rod, which atone end is provided with a handle, a, and to its opposite end has attached a number of wires, a, that from thence extend in a curve forward and outward, and at their outer ends are connected with a circular disk of flexible material, B. Said wires are preferably constructed in pairs with the outer ends of each pair connected together,

and are arranged at and attached to equidistant points around the edge of said disk. The wires a have such outward spring of their front ends as to cause the disk B to be drawn taut; but by means of a ring, 0, which is adapted to slide over said wires, the outer ends of the latter may be drawn together, as shown in Fig. 1, and such part of the device made to occupy but slightly more transverse space than other portions of the same. A

is adapted to engage with and lock in place said ring when the latter is moved to the outer limit of its motion and confines the outer ends of said wires. The-hook D has an arm, cl, which extends forward and slightly outward and furnishes a means whereby when desired said hook is released from engagement with the ring (3, and the wires a permitted to operate to expand the disk B, as is hereinafter described.

In use the cleaner described is arranged as shown in Fig. 1, and its front end passed carefully into a stove-pipe, E, or chimney-flue F, after which, by means of a slight turn of the device, the arm (1 is brought into contact with some portion of said pipe or chimney, and the hook D tripped, so as to release the ring 0 and permit of the expansion of the disk B. The cleaner, being now ready for use, is moved longitudinally through the pipe or flue, and as the edge of said disk is pressed against the inner surface of the same, soot or ashes adhering thereto will be detached and moved with the device.

For convenience in the use of the cleaner, sliding or hinged doors 6 are provided within the pipe E, such doors being placed at suitable points within the vertical or horizontal portions or at the outer bend of the elbow, and when opened permitting said cleaner to be inserted and operated, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of our invention, what we claim as new is 1. The hereinbefore described pipe and chimney cleaner, consisting of the rod A, provided with the wires a, and the disk B, secured to and made expansiblc by means of said wires, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
