Filed May 14, 1953 INVENTORY Huber.
A TORNEY United States Patent LOCK Max Huber, Geneva, Switzerland, assignor to Melina S. A., Fribourg, Switzerland, 2! company of Switzerland Application May 14, 1953, Serial No. 354,957
Claims priority, application Switzerland September 8, 1952 1 Claim. (Cl. 70-370) The present invention has for its subject a lock and more particularly a lock of the type to be fitted into a door, and comprising two plates between which is mounted the whole of the mechanism for actuating the catch bolt,.
the entry for the key being provided in a part fitted into the two plates in such a manner as to be capable of being replaced by others having openings for different keys.
It is to be observed that with a lock of this type, in the case of loss of a key, it is not necessary to change the lock completely but it is sufficient to change the fitted part in such a manner as to actuate the lock with another key, of which the shape is dilferent from that of the mislaid key.
The lock according to the invention is characterised in that the contour of the said fitted part corresponds substantially with the contour of the catch support of a cylinder safety device, in such a manner that after removal of the fitted part, the cylinder device can be introduced transversely into the plates and be secured in,
these, the lock being then actuated by means of the cylinder device.
In the accompanying drawings is shown diagrammatically and by way of example, one form of construction of the lock according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a front view, partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the fitted part, the key being inserted into this.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lock adapted to be actuated by means of a safety cylinder device.
The lock comprises, in the same manner as other known locks, two plates 1 and 2 between which is mounted the whole of the usual mechanism for actuating the catch bolt 3.
In the form of construction shown, the lock also comprises, apart from the dormant catch bolt 3, a bolt 4 of swan neck shape, adapted to be actuated by a handle, not shown.
In this lock (see Fig. 1), the opening 5 for the key is provided in a part 7 fitted into the two plates 1, 2. The part 7 is formed by two plates 8 in each of which is provided a keyhole.
The two plates 8 are connected by a cross-bar 9 which, in the particular case shown, is riveted in each plate.
The cross-bar 9 has a threaded bore 10, adapted to allow of the securing of the part 7 in the plates 1 and 2, by a screw 11 guided parallel to the movements of the catch bolt 3, by reason of a support 12 secured to the plate 2.
In the form of construction shown, not only the same lock can be used for different keys, by reason of the 2,846,865 Patented Aug. 12, 1958 interchangeability of the part 7, but it may also be adapted for being actuated by means of a cylinder safety device.
In fact, the contour of the part 7 is such that it corresponds substantially with the contour of the catch support 13 of a cylinder safety device 14. Thus after having unscrewed the screw 11 and having removed the part 7 from its seating in the plates 1 and 2, the cylinder device may be introduced into the said opening and held in position in this by the same screw 11 (see Fig. 3), the screwed bore provided in the catch support 13 of the cylinder device 14 for its securing being of identical size with that of the bore 10 of the part 7.
It is to be observed that the shape of the fitted part 7 may differ from that shown, as also its securing in the plates 1 and 2.
The securing of such a part as 7 may be effected, for example, by a screw engaging vertically under the part 7. It is also possible to omit any securing screw and to simply force, if necessary clamp, or even rivet the said part 7 into the plates 1 and 2.
However, it will be understood that, in all the forms of construction shown, the fitted part 7 must always have a shape enabling the same lock to be used, either for actuating the catch bolt 3 by the usual key, or by actuating it by means of a cylinder device 14.
Further, the fitted part 7, instead of being formed by a number of parts riveted together, may be constructed in one piece.
Further, although the drawings show a lock particularly for a dormant catch bolt and with a swan neck bolt, it will be understood that all other locks may be provided with a part with keyholes fitted into its casing.
I claim: 1
In a locking mechanism, the combination of a casing having two spaced apart face plate members, said face plate members each having an opening therethrough, said openings being in alignment with each other, guiding means positioned between the spaced apart face plate members, said guiding means including two spaced apart plates and a cross-bar member securedly positioned between said two plates and connected to each of said plates, said cross-bar member having a bore therethrough transversely positioned with respect to said plates, a cylindrical safety locking device securedly attached to said guiding means for rotative movement with respect to said guiding means, said guiding means constituting the catch support of said cylindrical safety locking device, said guiding means and said cylindrical safety locking device securedly attached thereto being removably positioned in said casing in said openings of said face plate members thereof, and means for attaching said guiding means between said face plates at said cross-bar member at the bore therethrough, whereby said guiding means, including the cylindrical safety. locking device attached thereto, may be changed at will.
