Be it known that I, \VILLIAM E. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylinder-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cylinder or pintumbler locks; and the main object of my improvement is to positively lock the screw which holds the case of the cylinder-lock in its socket against rotation.
. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my lock, showing the faceplate end. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line :0 a; of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a like view on the line 11/ y of Fig. 1.
As shown, my improvement is applied to a night-latch; but the invention relates only to certain parts of said night-latch and is equally applicable to various kinds of locks, the general mechanism of which may be of any ordinary or desired construction.
A designates the main case, having a principal face-plate l and supplemental or finishing face-plate 5, secured upon the face of-the main face-plate by means of screws 6. The case A is provided on one side with a socket, into which the case or shell B of a cylinderlock is inserted and held in place by the setscrew 7. The said shell or case is that of a well-known lock having sliding-plate tumblers, and my invention is equally applicable to pin tumbler looks, or any lock having J mounted in its shell a rotary plug 12 for operating upon the parts within the main case A, and means for locking said plug in the cylindrical case or shell B. As shown, the wall of the socket for holding said shell is beveled and the end S of the shell which is fitted thereto is dovetailed; but the particular manner of holding the cylinder-lock in its socket is not material, provided it is held by a screw the head of which extends through the face-plate. Neither is it essential that the holding-screw shall be a longitudinallymoving screw, as it is common in this class of locks to employa screw that is held against longitudinal movement while being turned to force a shoe or slide against the cylinderlock shell for securing the same in place.
is also immaterial whether there is only one cylinder-lock, as shown, or two cylinder-locks, one on each side of the main case, or whether there are one or two holding-screws in the face-plate.
The screw-holes and the screws by which the lock maybe fastened to the door are covered up by the supplemental face-plate 5. A supplementahface-plate thus covering up screws in the main face-plate is old and not of itself claimed as my invention.
In order to lock the set-screw or holdingscrew 7 against rotation to prevent tampering or accidental unfastening, I provide the outer end of said screw with an angular or equivalent shaped head 9, and I form a correspondingly-shaped hole 10 in the finishing face-plate, whereby said face-plate cannot be put on until the screw is turned to bring its angular head into a position to register with the angular hole in the face-plate, and when the said face-plate is on the screw cannot be rotated at all. The screw is, however, capable of being turned in the ordinary manner for inserting and removing the cylinder-lock when the supplemental face-plate is removed. After the screw has been turned into its position for holding the cylinder-lock in place if the position of the angular head does not register with the angular hole in the faceplate, the screw can be turned either backward or forward to make it register therewith, care being taken to have the screw set uptight enough to firmly hold the shell. Even when screwed up tightly enough to hold the shell it can be forced in a little farther without doing any harm. a
I claim as my invention The combination of a lock-case, a cylindergo look mounted therein, with the shell-holding screw having an angular head, and the supplemental face-plate secured upon the main face-plate of said case and having an angular hole that receives the head of said holdingscrew, whereby said screw is locked against rotation, substantially as described.
