Description

(No ModeL) PICKET FENCE. No. 284,685. Patented Sept. 11, 1883.

UNITED; STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
W'ILBER THOMAS, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
PICKET FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,685, dated September 11, 18 83.
7 Application filed January 27,1883. (No model.) l
' To all whom it may concern:
, cling-strands of wire.-
The invention has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, durable, ornamental, and eiiicient fenee, in which neither the pickets nor wire are liable to displacement.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of my improved fence. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail view in elevation, showing a picket in position. Fig. 4 is a detail cross-section.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a longitudinal base-strip, which is preferably formed of a single piece or strip, and may be formed with an ornamental or molded face, B, as shown. This base-strip preferably rests on a. longitudinal base-board, C, but can, if desired, rest directly 011 the ground. The strip A is provided with a longitudinal top shoulder, D, in rear of which is a longitudinal vertical flange or raised portion, E, the office of which will be presently described.
F designates the pickets of the fence, each of which is formed tapering its entire length; The pickets are retained by encircling coils or twists G in the longitudinal strands H of twisted securing-wire, and are placed with their larger end I resting on the shoulder D of the base-strip A and against the flange E.
I11 smooth shapes of pickets having a uni- 0 form width and thickness, the wires are liable to displacement from accidental or intentional blows, that in almost every instance are delivered from above. Pickets of this kind are also free to be easily and readily withdrawn 45 from the wires; but in my improved fence these disadvantages are entirely obviated. The base rail or strip prevents displacement of the picket downwardly, and the flange on the said base strip obviates displacement of the pick- 50 ets by being forced'inwardly. The securingwires cannot be displaced downwardly, be cause the diameter of the picket increases in that direction.
No nails are required in the construction of 5 sponding raised flange in rear thereof, longi- 65 tudinally-tapered pickets, having their larger end resting on the said shoulder and prevented from backward displacement by the flange, and the securingstrands of wire encircling the pickets, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILBER THOMAS.
