Description

Patented Sept. 4 1883'.
V W. CARR. v
NEEDLE BAR COVER FOR SEWING MACHINES.
UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM CARR, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-HALF TO J. K. MARTIN AND CORNELIUS VANDER vonr, BOTH or SAME PLACE.
NEEDLE-BAR COVER, FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,538, dated September 4:, .1883. Application filed February 5, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I,- WILLIAM CARR, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful im- 5 provement in means for concealing the upper end of the needle-bar protruding from the top of the head of sewing-machines, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement consists in a thimble, which I place over the top of the needle-bar, and se cure in any suitable manner tothe top of the sewing-machine head. This thimble is intended for sewing-machines already in use, as well as others. I
I In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing "my thimble applied to a sewing-machine head.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof.
A represents the arm of a sewing-machine, B the head, and D the needle-bar. Secured to the head is my sleeve or thimble O, which conceals thenpper end of the needle-bar from view. I prefer to attach this sleeve or thimble by forming a shallow'screw-threaded socket, B, around the needle-bar in the top of the .head, and a screw-threaded lower end, 0 on the thimbleto screw into the socket, a flange, 3 0, being formed on the thimble, above the screw-thread,to rest on the head. The thimble has a perforation, 0 preferably to allowair to enter and be discharged freely as the needle-bar works up or down.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination, with the sewing-machine head and a needle-bar to work through 0 the top of the head, of a thimble, 0, located on the top of the head, over the needle-bar, to conceal the upper end of the latter from view, and having a flange, G, resting on the head, and an air-hole, C", to permit the air to pass in and out of the thimble when the needle-bar is reciprocated, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a sewing-machine head and a needle-bar to work throughthe top of the-head, of athimble, 0, having flange O, air-hole O and screw-thread C the said thimble forming a cover to conceal the upper end of the needle-bar, as set forth.
