UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS M. FARMER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF PART TO JOHN VIERTHALER, JOSEPH DERFUS, JESSE E. MATTESON, EMERY L. TERRELL, V. A. GUDEX, D. P. REDD, CLARK S. MATTESON, AND CHARLES T. H. CLIFFORD, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
ASELF-THREADING SEWING-MACHINE. NEEDLE.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS M. FARMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mil- J waukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Self-Threading Sewing-Ma M chine Needles, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to improvements in selfthreading needles for sewingmachines, and the construction of the same is explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which M Figure 1 represents a plan or front view of the needle. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section drawn on line m w of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of Fig. 2. Like parts are identified by the same refero ence-letters throughout the several views.
A represents the body of the needle. B is the shank, by which it is secured in the machine. C is the point, and D is the eye.
My invention pertains more especially to 2 5 the peculiar construction of the thread passage or slit E, through which the thread is drawn into the eye, and also to the peculiar construction and arrangement of the device employed for automatically closing such slit after the thread has been drawn into the eye.
The device for closing the thread-passage E comprises an elastic plate F, having a convex exterior surface conforming in shapeto the shape of the needle, while its inner surface is flattened to conform to the opposing surface Or of the needle, against which it bears. The plate F is secured at its upper end to the needle by rivets G G, swaging, or other equivalent means, and its tension is such as to cause the 4 lower end H to spring outwardly, whereby its angular bearingsurface I is held firmly against the corresponding angular bearing-surface J of the needle. To prevent the liability of the threads entering the space K between the plate F and the opposing wall G of the needle, the lower end of the bearing-plate is provided SPECIFICATIONfOrming part of Letters Patent No. 752,213, dated. with an inward-projecting shoulder L, which engages beneath the shoulder M of the needle.
The extreme lower end of the bearing-plate F is tapered upwardly and inwardly, forming a bevel-surface N, whereby with the downward movement of the needle the thread is caused to slip over the joint between the lower end of such plate and the angular bearing-surface J of the needle without liability of being caught. To facilitate threading the needle, the extreme upper end of the bearing J is tapered inwardly toward the opposing surface I of the bearing-plate F, whereby a small notch O is formed at such point for engagement with the thread preparatory to drawing it into the eye.
When threading the needle, the thread is pressed inwardly and downwardly against the lower end of the bearing-plate, whereby the bearing-plate is forced inwardly toward the center of the needle, when the thread is permitted to enter the eye at the notch O between the opposing bearing-surfaces I and J, when .said plate is thrown back by its own elasticity A sewing-machine needle provided with a thread-receiving aperture, communicating from its exterior surface with the eye, the lower side of said aperture being beveled inwardly and downwardly toward the point of the needle, and one side of its central portion flattened for the reception of an elastic bearing-plate in combination with an elastic bearing-plate rigidly afiixed at one end to the flattened side of the needle; the lower end of said
